My doctor advises to wait a year. I wouldn't want to risk losing hair because of the sun. UV is a powerful hair killer.. and I know this firsthand. I love to tan, but if you're going to do it, make sure you speak to your doctor and/or protect your head.

hairdoyle,

You shouldn't expose the transplanted area to the sun for an extended period of time for about 6 months without sunscreen. But then again, long term sun exposure without sunscreen is dangerous anyway.

At one month post-op, you are safe to go out in the sun with sunscreen on your scalp. Just be diligent to re-apply as needed.

And you actually can get a tan by applying sunscreen. It just takes longer and you avoid the burn. I wouldn't however, try to make your goal to get the recipient area tan at this point, but rather wait out the redness and/or use aloe or vitamin E oil to facilitate healing.

Best wishes,

Bill
