Why does newly transplanted hair shed within 1 month?

I know this has been asked before, but is there any scientific reason or article? I could not find any. The reason I ask is because there are rare cases almost all the newly transplanted hair do not shed and just start growing. What makes these people different?

HughShaw,

The general consensus amongst leading hair restoration physicians is that trauma to the hair follicles during removal, handling, and transplanting causes the new hair to go dormant for several months after hair transplant surgery. Specific reasons and ways to overcome this are not yet fully known at this time. That said, some hair transplant surgeons believe Rogaine (minoxidil) may help shorten the dormant period and/or even prevent some of the newly transplanted hair from shedding at all. To date however, there are no scientific studies to back this up.

I'll tell you this though, it will be an exciting day indeed if the underlying reason for this phenomenon is discovered and ways to prevent an initial shedding period are found.

I hope this help.

Bill
