After 41, does proscar work?

I had a HT consult. The subject of proscar came up. My Dr, opened a big fat text book, which records drugs like Propecia, similar drug to proscar, and it says something like the results were no demonstrated for men aged 41. My Dr told me that if you take proscar when you are 41, it will be useless. According to my Dr, these results were recorded by the company producing proscar. Is that true? I used to have proscar (1/4 tablet per day) for 5 years, then I had a problem (could not maintain my erection), when I stopped it I no longer had this problem. I stopped it for 11 months, and now I lost a lot of hair. Got back to it now, but, in accordance with this Dr, it will not work. Could you please share your thoughts on this

I'm not an expert and I honestly don't know if Proscar is completely ineffective at that age. One thing is for sure, though: it works better on younger men. I started taking it in my early 20s and I had good results.

The initial tests of Proscar (when Merck did ot even know about the potential of hair growth effect) were for older men, I think more in the 50's or 60's range. They are more prone to prostate cancer.

 

For that reason, I don't see why it would not work at your age.

Finasteride was developed to aid in the treatment of Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). As a side-effect scalp hair began to thicken, because the formation of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) was inhibited.

These tests were conducted on older men. 35 yrs and older, I believe.

 

There is no reason why the drug should not be effective in treating hair loss in older men.

 

I know this might be a stretch of the imagination, but is it possible to continue taking finasteride(Proscar) and start taking Cialis or Viagra to aid with the erectile problem?

 

I'm not a doctor, but maybe you could ask you doctor, get a response and publish it here.

 

BTW get the scientific material referenced where it says that the drug does not work for me over 41 and publish that here too!

I do not have the material that said that. As I said, when I went for a HT consult, the surgeon showed me that fat text book, which on his desk whilst waiting for him to turn up. At first, I had high regard for this HT surgeon, but to be honest, I lost my faith in him for a number of reasons. I wanted clarification because I did not read the whole thing and what this HT surgeon was showing me could be out of context. According to that HT surgeon, that text book records Merck own results. He was against proscar and any other products except for minoxidil as I told him that I notice good improvements.

So the statistical boundary ends at age 41.

 

This does not negate pharmacological nor physiological effects beyond that boundary.

I think the whole mechanism of Hair loss is not fully understood at any age whether young or old.

I say give it a go. The only proven medication at any level of loss or age is either Finasteride or Minoxidil.
