stay on the propecia!

Hi, just a bit of advice for anyone going on propecia.....I'm 31 now and from the age of 22 it was pointed out by an ex girlfriend that i had a receeding hairline. At the temples but not the crown.Over the years it was very slow and gradual, and therefore i didnt notice it happening.About 3 years ago i heard about propecia and i began taking it. I never told anyone that i was taking it, and im sure that if i did they would hve said "but you're not bald".In August 04 i decided I didnt want to take it anymore, sex drive was slightly down and i also had a rash on my stomach, both which i put down to propecia.

About a month after going off it , my sex drive was back to normal, the rash was gone, but my hair was also starting to go.

The reate at which it has happened has totally astounded me. In October i went back on Propecia, but even now , approaching January I am still seeing more forehead every day i look in the mirror. I just cant believe how stupid I have been.

I actaully only now realise how well the propecia actually worked for me, and how thick my hair was in the summer. Now, even with dry hair I can see right through to the scalp under the bathroom light, I also have my hair much longer now to try and hide it a bit.

Also, there is a hole in my crown where there never was one before.

Last night I ordered 3 months supply of regaine extra strenght to see if this might halt it where it is.If my hair loss continues at the rate of the last 5 months, then it is actaully a possiblility that I may be bald or a class 5 my the middle of next year,(at the minute i would consider myself to be a 3A)

I never would have before even considered a hair transplant , but at the moment I am planning to leave my job just so that I can have the procedure, but this is all dependant on whether the current hairloss stabilises.

I guess i am telling this as a warning to anyone considering going off propecia, and i am also looking for any advice on what can be quickly done to stabilise what is hppening at the moment.

Hi gavin,

i have heard similar stories from others. keep taking it, and go for HT for the hairline. i am assuming you are taking 1mg every day.i havent yet taken it myself. the side effects have been hyped up so much. how bad was the rash. and how long did it last. did you have any other side effects? i have even heard your facial features changing and stuff.

good luck

hi, thanks for the encouragement. The rash was not that bad, as long as i left it alone........hard to do at times though. The sex drive and the rasfh were the only side effects i noticed, and i would not hesitate in encouraging anyone to take propecia. My main concern at the moment is trying to stop the current hair loss-ie stabilizing so that i can start to consider what kind of HT i can go for, as at the moment FUE is my preferred choice over FUSS just because of the thought of an 8" scar.

Hi Gavin,

I'm relatiely new to Propecia, but I just passed the 3 month mark and so far have seen no side effects. Sex drive is still the same and going strong which is good and no other side effects that I'm aware of. I can sympathize with you though especially since I only just now started taking propecia when I really wish I started taking it when I was about 23 when I really started to notice the hairloss. I am now 28, 3 months and 3 weeks post op of an HT, using Propecia and 2% minox (just to try to speed up growth, etc). The hair is growing in nicely from the HT, but it's still too early to tell what will happen or how well it will turn out. My HT was an FUE also as I see that's what you are considering.

I don't know...I'm not sure what to advice for you with Propecia....because honestly, if I felt that my sex drive was being severly effected, I'd have to judge whether or not I'd want to be a happily married sexually active bald man, or a miserable non-sexually active man with hair. Hmmmm....I think I'd rather be a happy bald man, BUT, I'd just go and get as many grafts placed in that area as possible. Well, enough of my ramblings!
