Vishwanath- Posted July 18, 2009 Share Posted July 18, 2009 Hi, I had my HT 12 days back, and I thought I'll share my experience with you guys. I am 21, had a receding hairline and went for a FUHT for 2100 grafts. The procedure was painless, just time consuming... I was bandaged when the procedure was over and this is what I learnt from them about Post-Op care. Medications: I was given pain killers for 5 days 3 tablets a day Antibiotics for 10 days, 2 tablets a day. Bandage Removal: I was told I could have the bandage removed myself, the next day. But I was travelling the next day, and so, removed the bandage only the day after that. Nothing wrong with having bandage for that long, I learnt. Shampoo: I was told to use a baby shampoo for the first one month and then use the usual shampoo after that. To avoid dandruffs Nizrole was what the doctor recommended. Useful Videos: I found this video extremely useful to learn about Post-Op care - [ ] What I've bought: I already had a red head band and that could cover the recipient area easily [so as to avoid dust] Anws, I bought a cap too. (The cap is pretty big to cover both the donor/recipient areas, and sits pretty loose. And the first, two days, I wore it above the bandage ) Saline water bottles (2 in number) from the drug store and a water sprayer to spray the saline water to the scalp for the first two/three days This I learnt was very important for the following reason: Some new grafts might have the blood-stained-dry-scalp [called as crusts???] attached to it after the procedure. And when the blood-stained-dry-scalp comes off, the graft may also come off too! Those crusts that are attached through the length of the hair poses no problem though. It is those crusts that are attached to the roots... Anws, the thing is to have the area wet, as explained in the video Wearing Caps: I did not wear the cap much, as I wanted to the area to have proper blood circulation. There was little going out of the house, so keeping the scalp clean was not a problem. Swelling: I noticed some swelling on the fourth day and a little more on the day next. However, I din't do much about it, and there's no swelling now. Blood-Stained-Dry-Scalp ( called crusts???) Removal : I did not notice that kind of dry crusts before. Only yesterday did I notice it and today while at shower I used a soft bristled hair-dye brush to remove it off. So that is another thing that you might have to buy, for post op care. Exercises I was told not to do any vigorous exercises for the first few days, No problem, am not so keen to exercise Minoxidil / Finasteride I was told I could take Finasteride tablets even the day just after the operation and that I could start using minox from after a month. Haven't used these medications before... I'm thinking of starting with both after about 20 days from now. I see so much advice in the internet saying around mid 20s is too young an age for HT.. What shall I do? --This advice is mainly because there may be further recession/losing-hair in the future and you'd need enough donor grafts for that. Yes. But this is the time of life that is to be spent, "feeling young" and confident. Later around mid 30s or 40s I may not be so worried about looking young and losing a few hairs. So my thought was to go for the HT (not for a very youthful hairline but) and then just take proper measures to prevent future loss. The other question, about the cost factor. Isn't it so costly? It's something like the cost of a new bike + a laptop put together. (which guys around this age would want) I could do with the old bike, and really, a desktop computer is fine with me. And of course, my parents had to agree. They shared similar views, and they found HT important enough to spend the money at.
