hair follicles

Recommended Posts

Hi, i have a few questions, it would be great if you guys can take your time off and answer them.

1) Is there any life span for hair follicles ?

2) Say a person has gone completely bald with a shiny head, does is mean all his hair follicles are dead ?

3) Is hair transplant the only solution for him or can he resort to minox and fin and get a noticeable response ? if yes how late after baldness can he start of medication to respond ?

4) If a person has been shedding hair for the last 3-4 years, and have developed severe thinning and a see thru scalp, does that mean all those hair follicles are dead and can never regrow hair back even with the aid of growth stimulant like minox ?

Thank you

karthik,

1. Each healthy hair goes through a life cycle including a growth phase, a shedding phase, and a resting phase. Learn more about the normal hair growth cycle. The hair growth cycle of hair susceptible to pattern baldness will change, ultimately resulting in the withering and dying of the hair until the follicle no longer produces new hair.

2. Hair follicles of the completely bald aren't necessarily dead, but dormant. Therefore, they won't produce any new hair. There is all kinds of research going on attempting to revive dormant follicles however, there isn't a whole lot of success in this area to date.

3. Only hair transplant surgery is proven to grow hair in completely bald areas. Propecia and Rogaine are typically more effective on miniaturizing hair, and in rare cases, may cause some regrowth in bald areas - but typically the hair looks like peach fuzz.

4. Thinning hair can be revived with Propecia and Rogaine, but it's not guaranteed. There isn't much success in reviving dormant hair follicles to date.

I hope this helps.

Bill
