Generally speaking, wearing hats or helmets does not cause baldness. However, under certain circumstances, ill-fitting headgear may result in traction alopecia. This is a localized form of hair loss resulting from "repeated yet unintentional pulling, twisting or rubbing of the hair". Traction alopecia can affect both men and women and may be temporary or permanent.
