I have to stop using minoxidil

Well as the header says i have to stop using topical minoxidil. I have recently discovered that i have a minor heart problem. I don't think that the problem was caused alone by minoxidil but i want to do everything that I can in order to prevent the problem from worsening. I know that oral minoxidil have some serious heart related side effects. And it commonly raises your heart rate with 15-20 beats a minute.

I wanted to hear from others who stopped using minoxidil if they felt like they lost a lot of hair ? I read some theories that not only the hairs you gained by using minoxidil will be lost but also the surrounding hairs - because they get used to and dependent on minoxidil. Im not sure about the validity of these theories. So I wanted to hear from some of you.

1 mg Finasterid M-W-F.

2,500 mcg Biotin.

1 mg 5 % Minoxidil once a day.

Multi-vitamin.

Fish oil.

Head and Shoulders every day.

Nizoral 2 % one time a week.

Emu oil.

Cardel,

While I'm very sorry to hear this, I'm glad that you had this heart problem evaluated by a specialist and decided to stop any medication that could (potentially) worsen the problem. I assume the physician told you to stop the minoxidil?

In the end, your heart health is absolutely crucial and I think you're acting responsibly here.

Furthermore, are you taking any other trusted preventive medications like finasteride or a ketoconazole-based shampoo? While you are likely to experience a shed on minoxidil (as you will lose the hair you regained with the medication), other proven therapies, if you are not using them already, could still definitely help (make sure you're checking these with your doctor first as well).

Again, sorry to hear this. Stay healthy!

My doctor doesn't have the best memory. He had forgotten that i used topical minoxidil.

But i made the choice and informed him about it. And he didnt advice me not to stop minoxidil :)

I am using Nizoral and Finasterid so I hope that my hairloss will only amount to a small number of hairs. So far I haven't lost many more hairs than usual. Im hoping that it stays like that for some time :)

Minoxidil was a horrible experience for me. At 25, I started noticing thinning. So, I got some Rogaine.

It was terribly messy but I figured it was worth it. I used it as stated and at best, noticed only minimal growth of very fine hairs. After a few months without any significant results, I stopped using it.

The manufactuerer may tell you different and some who have had good results may tell you differently; but I am convinced that it caused not only the fine hairs that grew in but also caused other hair in the general area to fall out as well.

That hair was likely thinning and would have eventually thinned and fallen out further down the road anyway but in my belief, it accelerated the loss and caused the premature fallout.

If you can take propecia, take propecia. I've had good results with that and no side effects. I'd also suggest supplemental use of vitamins.

Steve,

Minoxidil causes an accelerated shed during the first few (up to 4) months of usage. After this period, shed hairs usually grow back thicker and in greater numbers. Because of this, it is usually suggested that patients use minoxidil for 6-12 months before evaluating the results and potentially stopping the medication.

It seems like you may have quit the drug during this initial shedding phase. However, glad to see you found a proven treatment that works for you!
