New Member thoughts about transplant

Hello all,

So I just joined this forum, a little late I guess, since I just did a hair transplant 5 days ago and the unexpected post procedure pain..OUCH!!

Unfortunately in India, there's not much information about the procedure and post care so what little i've learned in the last few days was from reading the many useful posts. Just wondering if anyone can help with

1. What is the typical pain timeline after the procedure, it's been 5 days now and the donor area feels sore and hurts a fair bit.

2. What care should i take, especially about lifting weights and all, since I just became a new father 10 months ago and can't not lift our lil baby boy, is that a bad thing?

3. I still need pain killers, atleast twice a day even though the doc felt it would not be needed beyond 3 days, is this normal?

4. What can I expect in the months to follow about recover, healing, regrowth etc?

I've had 3500 grafts done in a 11 hour procedure, not sure if that changes the opinions but just thought i'd let you know.

Thanks for the advice, i've got some pics from 1 hour after procedure.

sidey67,

Welcome and congratulations on your recent hair transplant!

It's hard to quote averages for pain and discomfort after surgery because everyone has a different pain threshold. Speaking for myself, I hardly needed painkillers after hair transplant surgery but I probably took them for a couple of days anyway just to take the edge off. My surgeries where FUT and most of the discomfort was gone after the sutures were removed.

In terms of recovery, healing and growth, be sure to follow your surgeon's post-operative instructions. Some advise gently massaging off scabs between 7 and 10 days post-op while others advocate allowing them to fall off naturally.

By 10 days after surgery, your grafts are firmly anchored and protected below the scalp. On average patients can expect the following growth time.

3 months - 10%

4 months - 25%

5 months - 40%

6 months - 60%

7 months - 70%

8 months - 75%

9 months - 80%

10 months - 90%

11 months - 95%

12 months - 98%

18 months - 100%

As for lifting, again, most of the concern here is for patients who have undergone FUT and have a linear scar to protect from stretching. You should be fine after 10 days but don't strain yourself too much.

Hope this helps,

Good to see the growth chart, not something I'm gonna obsess with but at least it's an chart to look forward to.

Just curious, other then basic shampoo and not scrubbing the new transplant area, are there any other precuations, to-do's, etc. My surgeon doesn't seem to require anything else.

Thanks again,

Hey Sidey67, i just checked that you had the treatment from Dr Viral Desai. I was also thinking of checking out the same doctor at Sarla & Desai hospitals in Mumbai. If you could share the results of your treatment, it would be of great help.. thx..

With regard to the linear FUT scar, how long should a person wait before lifting weights. Not heavy weights, but enough weight to at least know you've been working out. I've heard 2 months?

NEWHAIRPLEASE,

This article from our Hair Loss Q&A Blog by Dr. Bernstein provides excellent advise on the subject.:
