Senior Member Blake Bloxham Posted January 16, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted January 16, 2011 Newhair, The way I understand it, the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT - the hormone responsible for carrying out genetic baldness) occur via two enzymes: 5-alpha-reductase 1 and 5-alpha-reductase 2. Propecia (finasteride) stabilizes baldness by inhibiting 5-alpha-reductase type 2, where as Avodart (duasteride) inhibits both type 1 and type 2 enzymes. Knowing this, it's not difficult to see why utilizing duasteride would result in less overall DHT. The reason why most hair loss sufferers utilize finasteride is because it's the only of the two drugs that has been clinically tested and proven safe and effective for genetic baldness. Early trials were carried out utilizing Avodart (2002) but, for whatever reason, they were abandoned before completion. As to whether or not there are any issues taking a drug that blocks the DHT pathway from both types of enzymes, I'm unsure. However, I would continue utilizing the medication that's been tested and proven, and discuss any potential switch with a physician.
