is propecia too much for me?

Hi all,

This is my case, I'm 30 years old and I have started noticing that my hair started getting thinner around a month ago and itching like crazy. I have also noticed some flaky white stuff, like dandruff, although it doesn't fall off.

I went yesterday to the dermatologist, he checked my hair for like 2 seconds, and he prescribed me propecia and minoxidin 5%, he also told me that I only have to take the meds for 3-4 months (for what I've researched this is not the case)

On the other hand, I have been dieting for the last 6 months, eating around 1600-1800 calories a day with creatine and protein supplements. I also have been lifting weights and running 5-6 days/week. I have lost around 20 pounds.

I have been taking full body pictures since I started my exercise routine so I can clearly see that the thinning started this last month. I have attached pictures of last month and today.

My issue is that I don't feel very happy of being attached to these meds for next few years of my life and I'm wondering if the thinning might the result of the calorie deficit or the white flaky stuff and hence adjusting the macronutrient ratios, increasing the calorie intake with specific vitamins, shampoos or another alternative treatment can strengthen the hair and avoid propecia and minoxidin.

Any advice will be much appreciated

Ps: Since my experience with the doctor wasn't that pleasant, I have another appointment with a different specialist next week.

Ps2: As you might have noticed, English is not my first language so if anything is not clear, please let me know.

Your diet sounds perfectly reasonable; I highly doubt it is causing hair loss. If you normally ate 2500 calories and then dropped down to like 1000 a day, maybe. Even then, the hair loss most likely would be more patchy or diffuse, not thinning in the hairline.

To be honest, the two pictures don't really illustrate any hair loss that I can detect. The hairline is not super dense in the second pic, but the view is closer and the curls in your hair aren't obscuring the hairline like in the first photo (which also appears to have been taken when your hair was longer). A better way to monitor this with photos is to take them with your hair pulled back.

You may just have developed a mature hairline, since it doesn't appear to be receded but your temple angles don't look closed. This can happen between the ages of around 17-30. But we know our own bodies best, so if you think it's thinning, I would see another specialist like you say.

First, Propecia should be fine for you now, also combine it with Rogaine for best results.

Caloric intake has nothing to do with HL, vitamins/minerals/fatty acids/enough protein and carbs have a effect (amount of effect of diet varies widely amonth experts and doctors)

Sounds like your OK with your diet.

Try about the meds and evaluate.

Diet with the proper vitamin formulation is very important as well. This is not just a 1-2 month long endeavor, but you must follow a well regualted routine of the proper vitamins along with diet to retard har loss. If you want mor info you can check out my website at http://www.squidoo.com/vits-for-hairloss , it goes over many vitamin-related options to take for hair loss.
