hares
Hello, for the past few month I have been on treatment with Methylphenidat (eg Ritalin), because I noticed increased hair loss and generally the hair getting thinner, I stopped this treatment and changed over to Amphetamine (DL-Amphetaminesulphate, prepared by chemist). Now it appears to be that this is causing hair loss too. Does anyone know why these medications cause hair loss and whether the hair grows back normal after discontinuation of medication, and if so, after how long? I cant get any clear information on this, some say yes, others say no, yet other say, that these drugs may even cause resp. speed up androgenetic alopecia. Looking forward to hints and infos. Regular Member Jason76 Posted June 18, 2007 Regular Member Share Posted June 18, 2007 Hey Hares, Theres no known side effect of hair loss with these drugs that I could find. It maybe that your hair loss is down to some other cause. How long has your hair loss gone on for first of all? Also has any of your family experienced hair loss,ie. parents, granparents, great grandparents? It maybe that your hair loss is hereditary. Take a look at these other Causes Of Hair Loss, they may help you come to a decision on what is causing it. If you are still sure that your hair loss is down to the medication you are taking then it is best to consult with your doctor and see if he can change your medication to something other than the two you have already tried. hares
sorry, but perhaps you should look harder (though it's not that hard really), hair loss is a well known side effect of these drugs. try the Ritalin prescription guide from Novartis, section "side effects" (alopecea) try "hair loss adderall" in google. it is well known that amphetamine causes hair loss in some. try www.baldingblog.com
Regular Member Jason76 Posted June 19, 2007 Regular Member Share Posted June 19, 2007 hair loss adderall Ok, well sorry for trying to help I did a couple of searches on ritalin and the amphetamine drugs and I couldn't find anything, my mistake. It's not very well covered at all, more info should be posted on this. I can answer your question about the length of time it takes the hair to grow back. It takes roughly 3-4 months after discontinuation of medication for the hair to start to grow back. It will then start to grow back to the original thickness and strength. Hope this helps this time (Signature removed by Falceros - Co-Moderator of this community due to promotional material. Please refer to our Terms of Service for more information. hares
Ok, well sorry for trying to help yeah, sorry, but can you imagine how frustrating it is to get an answer like your first one? in addition to that, I live in a country of know-it-alls (Germany), even pharmacists will say "cant be, no side-effect" even though it explicitely says so in the precription guide of Ritalin for example... I can answer your question about the length of time it takes the hair to grow back. It takes roughly 3-4 months after discontinuation of medication for the hair to start to grow back. Where did you find this info? thanks, Hares
Regular Member Jason76 Posted June 20, 2007 Regular Member Share Posted June 20, 2007 Hares, With regards to the length of time it takes for the hair loss to regrow, that is general time it takes for the hair loss to enter it's growth phase after the cause has been shut out. In this case the medication stopped, as it says in my last reply. I know this from personal experience. Senior Member calvinmd Posted June 20, 2007 Senior Member Share Posted June 20, 2007 I've been on a bunch of perscription stimulants over the years. (Sleep issues, ADD, etc.) I agree that stimulants inhibit growth of hair, but I think this issue can get over-emphasized sometimes. I find that it takes a pretty large dosage of a stimulant (read: illegal) before that even becomes an issue. Although everyone's body is different. But just look at the widespread stimulant usage in Hollywood - Lots of people in that industry are on everything from Adderal, to Dex, to full-blown raging cocaine addictions. If big hair loss with even just prescribed amounts of stimulants were really that commonplace, then there wouldn't be any real hair left on TV. ------------------------------------------------

I have experienced some hair loss in the last 6 months. I have used Dr. prescribed Ritalin for many years but have only taken half the dose. I started take the full dose maybe around the time I started noticing hair loss. Hmmm! That maybe what the cause is. Thanks loads for the great disussion. BenaTequiero
Hey hares. i have the same problem u r suffering and because of which i joined this site. I today in the morning noticed my hair being reallyyy less while I used to have really long and thick hair. But because of using Ritalin now I just lost my hair just like that. I cried and cried I couldnt believe it. This is totally unacceptable. My brother and sister they're doctors they told me to stop using this drug. I used to have two pills at a time and I could suffer bad but mostly have the euphoric effects coz of which I would use this drug calmly. I would have this drug for study aid. I was very well aware that its main side effect is hair loss. But I thought i have thick hair and ignored it like it wont happen. But it happens and u notice it when the damage is done. I am extremely insecure now. I quit this drug but what about my hair? I want my hair to grow back right now...Dont know how long would it take ): but Im screwed up. Damned! Senior Member RCWest Posted May 16, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted May 16, 2011 It's well proven that amphetamines have hair loss as a side effect. How long have you been on the medication? If you've stopped it, your hair should return within a year. At least the hair you've lost recently. If you've been on the medication for several years then you may only get back what you've lost in the past year or so. Medication induced hair loss "usually" comes back somewhat. Finasteride 1.25 mg. daily Avodart 0.5 mg. daily Spironolactone 50 mg twice daily 5 mg. oral Minoxidil twice daily Biotin 1000 mcg daily Multi Vitamin daily Damn, with all the stuff you put in your hair are you like a negative NW1? Senior Member cardel25 Posted May 21, 2011 Senior Member Share Posted May 21, 2011 Perhaps u can try Strattera ? There is no reason that this would cause hairloss even though some people claime to have experienced it its not listed as a side effect. Take note that strattera is not a central stimulant like the two products you have used. Its not as effective but it works where its mostly needed. Prefrontal Cortex. 1 mg Finasterid M-W-F. 2,500 mcg Biotin. 1 mg 5 % Minoxidil once a day. Multi-vitamin. Fish oil. Head and Shoulders every day. Nizoral 2 % one time a week. Emu oil. http://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/cardel25/blog/403/
Senior Member Paulygon Posted February 2, 2014 Senior Member Share Posted February 2, 2014 Stimulants probably do cause hair loss in the same mechanism of action as stress-induced hair loss. Paulygon is a former patient of Dr. Parsa Mohebi My regimen includes: HT #1 2710 grafts at Parsa Mohebi Hair Restoration in Los Angeles in 2012 Rogaine foam 2x daily, since 2012 (stopped ~10/2015) Finasteride 1.25mg daily, since 2012 (stopped ~12/2015) HT #2 3238 grafts at Parsa Mohebi Hair Restoration in Los Angeles in Jun. 2016 Started Rogaine and Propecia in July. 2016 after being off of them for about a year.
