  1. Hi all, I want to share some information with you all that could spell the end of male pattern baldness. I've been aware of a receding hairline ever since I was aged around 20. One thing I always noticed is that the areas that were receding were accompanied by psoriasis-type inflammation. The psoriasis only occurred around my temples, and it was only these areas that were affected by hair-loss/thinning. I have also been afflicted by various other symptoms over the years, including insomnia etc and I now have full-blown chronic fatigue syndrome. I started a treatment program called the Marshall Protocol (MP) that uses a combination of drugs including antibiotics because it is now known that CFS is caused by what are called cell-wall-deficient bacteria - bacteria that shed their cells and then inhabit our human cells. It has also been found that the Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) in humans is responsible for transcribing thousands of genes, and is also intimately tied to our innate immune system. Psoriasis is also caused by these same bacteria, and it can be completely cured with the MP, along with many other diseases previously thought to be genetic and incurable (multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arhtritis, diabetes, crohn's disease, lyme disease, etc). So, the science of the MP could unlock the mystery of male pattern baldness once and for all, and provide a curative treatment rather than a preventative treatment that we have now. The science is early days yet and not designed to treat hair-loss, but the Marshall Protocol has a public study site (marshallprotocol.com) where you can read about the science and members' experiences throughout treatment. Many say that their hair loss has stopped and reversed, including several with male pattern baldness and who had completely lost their hair. One guy feels he will have a full head of hair again in a few years time. Here is a peer-reviewed article that ties the VDR to hair loss: http://mend.endojournals.org/c...tract/me.2004-0415v1 This article explains the link between psoriasis and hair loss: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pu...206513?dopt=Abstract This is the link from the Marshall Protocol website discussing hair-loss (you can read people's experiences towards the bottom): http://www.marshallprotocol.co...?id=7708&forum_id=32 If your hairloss is accompanied by psoriasis, or you suffer from any other symptoms that your doctor has not been able to help you with (could even be as minor as stuffy sinuses, itchy skin, insomnia, anxiety etc), and especially if you suffer from a chronic illness, the MP may assist you with your hair loss. I haven't noticed anything yet because I had controlled my hair loss with dutasteride, but in the future, once i'm well, I will try coming off dutas and see how it goes. However, even if you suffer from pure hair loss and otherwise feel fine, you might be willing to try the MP to see if it is indeed a cure for male pattern baldness. There are doctors all over the world prescribing it and you can ask for a list of doctors near you on the MP website, but you may have trouble convincing one to prescribe it purely for male pattern baldness. But it is safe and there are doctors willing to try it with all conditions. These are exciting times we live in!!

  3. That calculator is great, I think I need all I need to know now! Thanks
  4. Hi guys, Thanks for the response. I'm hoping I won't need any more surgery once I get the frontal area the way i'd like it because i'm hoping the drugs will keep the rest in place. They seem to be doing on ok job so far. Bill, I have a post here with photos when I had my surgery. Can you access it? If you can just imagine the scabbed area now has hair, I want to bring it down another .5cm or so and thicken it up.
  5. Hi all, I would like the advice of one of the moderators or doctors if that's ok. I haven't been able to upload any new pics of my ht, but all has gone well and it's growing in nicely. I was very conservative in my first op, mainly because we have no recommended physicians here, but also because there are no coalition physicians. But, i'm reasonably happy. I'll post pics asap but my computer is playing up and not allowing me to upload photos. It's not as dense as I would like and in my opinion, it looks like a ht on close inspection. But I don't think I could expect much more with only 400 grafts. If you have a look at my photos and imagine the new hairline, I want to bring it down a little further and add more density. I contacted a coalition doc and was quoted 1000 grafts for the work. I really want a strong frontal hairline and would be prepared to have less density towards the back if I continue balding (i'm on dutasteride). I was also told I have enough donor hair for around 7000 grafts. So if I used 1000 of those on the slim frontal region i'm talking about, do you think another 6000 grafts would be enough to cover the remainder of my head with a satisfactory cosmetic appearance? I was thinking it could be graded, gradually going thinner as it goes back. I hope the drugs are enough to keep my remaining hair because my family pattern tells me I will be completely bald on top by age 60, but high hairline around the back and sides. Thanks, Matt

  7. Hi, I was just wondering if there are any ultra-refined physicians who visit Australia or who would be willing to do so for a period, so we can can have easy access to the world-class surgeons? With the Australia dollar currently so weak, it would work out cheaper for people to travel to Australia to get large amounts of work done, but would also give the many Australian patients access to something we don't have. It would also be a fantastic working holiday for an overseas-based physician. Just an idea...

  9. Here's a brief three month update. I can see a lot of little hairs coming through, which probably started a couple of weeks ago but now is showing through quite well. It's still quite sparse, but it's very early days and even still, from a distance you can see my new (or old!) hairline. I think this is a good sign of things to come. I'll post some pics in a little while.
  10. It's more like dandruff, definitely not scabs. But it's not normal dandruff either. The flakes are more like scales and are whiter and thicker. I don't have any pics right now as it comes and goes. DOesn't sounds like it's anything major, just some new growth etc going on.
  11. Hi all, I'm at 6 weeks post op and have noticed some scaling coming up. I've also had some pimples, which i've read are normal, but haven't read anything about scaling at 6 weeks. Is this also normal? Matt

  13. Thanks spex, For the record, it's winter down under and no, Australia is not as hot as a sauna! Though in the future who knows...If I can find a sauna with naked swedish girls i'm there, but this is for general health and wellbeing. Cheers, Matt
  14. Hi all, Just wondering, when is it safe to start taking long sauna's after a HT? I'm three weeks post op and would like to resume my sauna regimen. Cheers
  15. I'm in the same boat, at day 18 and I still have many of the grafts, but they are slowly leaving. I've been enjoying seeing my new hairline and am a little concerned I may feel a bit balder once they go! I can't tell if i've experienced a small amount of shock loss or if I just got used to the new hairline. Anyway, can't wait for it to grow in.
  16. Hi group, I understand you should gently rub the grafts off in a circular motion, but am wondering - do you press into the scalp and move the scalp itself around, or do you let your fingers gently brush over the scabs to gently knock them off? Thanks

  18. Here are some day 6 pics. Everything seems to be coming along well. The grafts finally feel quite solidly anchored, I have almost no discomfort now from the recipient or donor, and today I very gently washed my hair for the first time with mild shampoo. I'm not game to massage the grafts until day 9-10, don't think they're quite ready to come off yet. I haven't posted pics of the donor because I can't get a good view of it. I'll wait until the stitches are gone and will get an image of it then. It feels ok though, has a slight ridge and very little pain, but is still tender.
  19. Thanks for the reassurances, but I thought day 3 was a little early to be shedding. The earliest i've read about this happening is day 6.
  20. Hi group, I noticed a little scab flake off today from the frontal part of my scalp, at day 3. I checked it closely and found a hair. There was no blood or anything, and I didn't knock it. I just noticed it loose in my surrounding hair. I didn't see a bulb or anything, so i'm hoping I didn't lose it. Is it possible that I could heal so quickly? Or do you think I lost the hair? Most of the others look like they have at least a few days before they come off, although there is another in the frontal part of the scalp that looks like it is shedding. I've been taking megadoses of vitamin c and garlic to help my immune system along, so perhaps this is working?

  22. I found this topic by searching and wanted to start discussion again. I too noticed itching in the temple areas on my scalp, the only place I was thinning. This used to happen in my early-mid twenties. The hair loss was by no means profound, but was occurring. I too felt there was a connection with the itching. My itching, too, was helped by using nizoral, but obviously didn't cure the problem. I have a theory and some people may be willing to try this out. Nizoral is basically an antifungal shampoo and if it helps you, it indicates you may have a systemic yeast (candida) problem that could contribute to your hair loss. I have it and have been treating it through a candida control diet, cutting out all foods that feed candida and and slowly killing it off. I've noticed the itching on the scalp has completely stopped since i've been on the program, and I never need nizoral anymore. I also moisturize my entire scalp regularly, nightly if possible, with a glycerine-based moisturizer. I doubt that helps with any yeast or fungus, but it soothes my scalp in any case. My scalp tends to be on the dry side as it is. There are many symptoms associated with candidiasis, hair loss being one of them. If you are interested in reading more, check this yahoo group: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/candidasupport/ Cheers, Matt
  23. I know what you mean, but i'll just see how it grows out. I think it will look good, but can always go back for some small fue work for some more density if need be. Dr Knudsen seems an ethical surgeon, he prefers to play it safe. To be honest, he brought the hairline down more than I thought he would, and strengthened up the frontal hairline a little which I didn't think he was going to do, but i'm happy with it. I've always had a high forehead so didn't want one lower than when I was a teenager! I'll definitely keep you posted, we don't have enough info on Australian docs on this site. Keep up the good work, your site helped me make this decision.
  24. Of course he discussed it with me, he struck me as a very ethical doctor. I only had a small amount of recession and was a norwood 1.5, so I didn't need much. The only doctor practicing FUE in Australia charges about three times as much as what I paid. given the strip was small, the scar will be very small also and already cannot be seen through my hair. I am very pleased I didn't have to wait until I needed 1000 grafts, I just wanted to restore my natural hairline and full head of hair. I may not ever need any more surgery if the drugs hold it all in place, which they have for a couple of years now. I've noticed a good amount of regrowth so I am responding very well. Bill, what do you think of the work?
  25. I had a HT with Dr Knudsen on the 11th June '08, here are a few 1st day post op pics. Dr Knudsen recommended around 400 because of the mild level of my hair loss, and what he believed he could achieve with the hair I have. I had a lot of 3's placed towards the back which will mean good density, and the frontal hairline was strengthened with 2's and 1's.
