  1. You can't just get yourself on propecia in this country. Well, that's not true, there are some websites that are willing to sell the drug to you without having to see a doctor. But, if you play by the rules, you need to see a doctor and have him prescribe it for you. Obviously, telling someone on this message board to start taking propecia doesn't mean that person will run out, get the drug and start eating it like candy. It's more of a suggestion. Of course the person should discuss it with his doctor to see if it is the right thing to do given his medical background.

When men ask for suggestions here, that is simply what they are getting in return.... suggestions. It is up to them to research it (I think most of us here are more than willing to help with that as well), talk to their doctor, and decide for themselves if they want to take the drug or not.

You have very valid points, but no one here is forcing anyone to do anything. In the end, we are all responsible for ourselves. icon_smile.gif

  2. Both Propecia and Proscar contain the same drug... Finasteride. Propecia is 1mg and Proscar is 5mg. To save money, some people get a prescription for Proscar and cut each pill into 4ths, giving you about 1.25mg each dose. The dosage for Propecia is one pill a day (1mg a day).

Perhaps your doctor feels that taking 1.25mg every other day would be a good preventive measure. Are you still losing hair? If not, then taking the drug every other day is a good way to keep it in check. However, if you are still losing hair, you might want to switch to an everyday dosage. Of course, check with your doctor first.

Hope this helps a bit. icon_smile.gif

  3. There is a difference between Rogaine and Propecia. Rogaine "forces" hair to grow. Propecia lowers DHT levels which is responsible for hair loss. With less DHT in your system, you will lose less hair, perhaps none, and your hair will continue to grow. Rogaine, however, doesn't get rid of the problem (DHT). In order to prevent hair loss, you need to get to the source of the problem.

When you start Propecia, it will take a long time before you see any positive results. Some see results at 3 months, some take longer (6, 8, 12 months). Just stick with it and let it do it's thing.

  4. "Most woman I've polled say that when they see a guy who is wearing a ball cap, and he is not playing baseball, and it's not part of a uniform, that they assume the guy is bald."

Just like most men assume that women that wear their sweater or sweatshirt tied around their waist must have a fat ass. But sometimes they don't. Sometimes it's a fashion thing, sometimes they are just hot and trying to keep cool, etc.

The same can be said about guys and caps. It doesn't ALWAYS mean the guy is bald or balding.

  5. I wouldn't worry about it. It's just a few days. I'm running low myself, I have 3 pills left. But I can't get my refill till Friday. I took one pill this morning, but I'm going to skip tomorrow. The drug stays in your system for a few days, so missing one day here and there won't set you back in your progress. Just take one every other day till you get your new supply. You should be fine. icon_smile.gif

  6. I'm only on month 2 of taking propecia. I too am not a big fan of taking any sort of drug for many years, perhaps the rest of my life. Hopefully hair cloning will be perfected and legalized (here in the U.S.) so I can eventually stop the drug and just get a transplant. But until that day, I'll continue to take propecia.

  7. Most men don't notice any results until 3 months. As vocor said, 1 week is not enough time. However, you might notice some "side effects" within two weeks. Side effects does not always mean something bad. For example, you'll probably notice a decrease in body hair (chest, legs, arms, etc.) since DHT is used in that hairs production. Some men, myself included, noticed an increased libido. The most horrifying side effect is DEcreased libido, which occurs in less than 2% of men taking propecia (according to Merk's testing). So an increase certainly is not a negative side effect. icon_razz.gif

Another thing you need to be aware of is that you might experience some slight shedding before the 3 month mark. Don't give up hope just yet. This is a sign that the drug is indeed working and that healthier, stronger hair will grow. Depending on your current hair loss condition, you might not even notice this shedding phase.

    Hope this helps. Good luck!

  8. I had an increased libido when I started propecia too. I think it began just after week 1. I thought that maybe it was psychological at first, you know.... I'm all excited that my hair "problem" is finally solved and all that. But it was starting to get a little out of control. icon_razz.gif I strongly believe that the drug did have something to do with it.

I just started month 2, and this past week everything seems to have calmed down a bit. That, of course, is of some concern to me but I'm not ready to give up on propecia just yet. I've read that many of the men that experience decreased libido over time recover, whatever that means. lol.

As for the shedding... It's a part of the normal process. It's a sign that the drug is working and that stronger and healthier hair is on the way. Good luck to you!

  9. I know that if you miss a dosage, it is recomended that you just wait till the next day and continue the normal 1mg a day dose. Why? Because your body won't build up enough DHT in just one day to make a difference. However, if you're just starting, I think taking it every day would be best. You need to lower DHT levels and keep it low for a while for your hair to recover. Perhaps months from now an every-other-day routine would be fine, but for now I'd say take it everyday. But that's just me. Good luck!

  10. I started propecia just over 1 month ago. Almost right away I noticed increased libido. However it seems to have calmed down a bit. Perhaps I wore myself out lol, or perhaps this is a sign of the negative side effects appearing. Too early to tell yet. I can only hope for the best right now.
