Age is only one factor. The rest is how aggressive your hair loss is. Have you used any medication and has it had an impact to slow/stop the progression. Are there maybe underlying factors like hormone/vitamin imbalance, stress, perhaps scalp inflammation.

Hair loss is multi-factorial. It's not just down to male pattern baldness as most commonly thought imo although it usually is the main culprit in most cases.

I am 31, i think my situations as such that i have got a history that maybe demonstrates me on the surface to be a more suitable candidate but my age is only a small part. There's people who in their mid to late 30s end up having no real hair loss and then all of a sudden becomes aggressive. It's why imo medication is important even somewhat pre-emptively.

Yep I’m on fin for 1 year so far. No regrowth but haven’t noticed further progression

Honestly, anything probably under 25 is risky  and even more so for those with more aggressive hair loss even on medication and perhaps other issues

I would say there's quite a few factors to be considered a good candidate but there's also hope you have as an average candidate if you can show hair loss is slowed and you start taking medication for 12+ months that's shown to be effective. Progress photos etc.

I know as a younger guy we want that perfect hair and envy those that do. Hell, i was in that situation as i said. However, when you get older, if you are starting to look after it with medication and then get a hair transplant at the right time, you could look better in your 30s and 40s, than those guys who had it good in their late teens/20s, and then male pattern hair loss hit them and they didn't know how to deal with it and went bald or whatever.

You should play the long game. You live more life in your 30s to 50s than you did in your birth to 20s.

So late 20s is good or 30s? Ya I agree thanks for this. Very well thought and explained

I think it's ultimately that you accrue a reputation as "The Best" or "Top 5" etc. and that has a knock on effect for demand. It's one of the most elected procedures for males and imo it's a sellers market to set their prices according to their reputation, skills etc.

The demand imo has only massively increased and although hair mills are popping up left, right and centre. The reputable places are seriously outnumbered and in demand, so it's a bad combination for those in particular who are stuck in this massive modern age magnifying glass hyper focused on looks and losing their hair, and just want to get that confidence back they feel they would have. Unfortunately that desperation leads to poor choices and that's why we're heading for a pandemic in 10-15 years or less of men who have been ruined by hair mills and nothing would be possible as their donors may have beeb destroyed.

I personally am grateful i didn't rush into a hair transplant in my early 20s. I'm just as grateful for having the foresight and access to these sources of information like the forum etc. to finally convince myself to try medication first.  albeit also greatly thanks to my younger brother who took the step even before me.

I also feel like my particular case whilst it doesn't seem particularly unique, it has its own issues. My temporal points completely receded by like my late teens. The frontal hairline wasn't too bad and just maturing but it's due to the lack of temple points that it made my situation possibly look worse and harder to style over so i still got the same sort of feeling as others that lose their hair at a younger age too.

It's only recently again in the last few years i started looking again to potentially have a hair transplant and i would argue the hardest part of a hair transplant is to restore the temple points and imo there's only a handful of clinics/Dr's in the world probably adept enough to do them. I think i may have found the right place, but i just need to get some things in order before i'll know if i can actually go through with it.

I'm on a budget, but more power to those that have the financial means to cherry pick the absolute best out there and go through with it for their peace of mind.

I'm just trying to pay a little more, get the quality i need and not get ruined at a hair mill.

What age do you think is the absolutely earliest a man should go through with HT based off donor keepage and progression of hair loss  on average?

Thank you for your answer. Great to hear, that you have good results from Dr. Jeffrey Epstein. You are right, the experience from ex-patients is the best. That is why I think that before and after pictures are very important. Do you have some photos from your HT here?
BTW: Here I read that the forum de-recommended him, so this is why I wanted to ask: https://longhaircareforum.com/threads/eyebrow-transplant-have-you-will-you-do-it.600955/

Hello Alex is this a full eyebrow transplant? Like are you just wanting some hairs to even put or are your eyebrows think and want a full rebuild for 8,500? That seems high to me for just a minor fix

Dutasteride at 0.5mg everyday blocks 51% of scalp DHT, if you're losing more than 50-150 hairs a day that normally are refreshed, and you have ruled out the other factors of telogen effluvium, hormone imbalance etc.

Then the unfortunate truth is that you are very DHT sensitive and if you weren't using it. Your situation may deteriorate even worse off it.

How much dht  does it block in general ? I thought it was 90%

  6. Thank you everyone. Yes I currently take 1mg fin for the last year. Use to do rogaine but it irrated my scalp. I’m thinking of oral minox. I have reached out to many surgeons but they all say 22 is way to young which I respect their honesty. I just wanted to vent to people that understood.

they probably take it for granted too lol

They do lol all of them use horrible shampoos, style their hair daily, and I’ve even heard them say “I wish my hair wasn’t so thick” like what lol I wish my hair wasn’t so thin geez. It also doesn’t help they make fun of people balding.

    Ba22,

Please allow me to address the specific question you have regarding "neck hair"...that hair is typically referred to as "nape hair" and yes, some docs have used it as donor hair because of its softer texture.

BUT A WORD OF CAUTION:  Nape hair can be potentially lost in the future with some individuals...so I have always advised younger guys to look at the older men in their families on both sides...if the men tend to lose their nape hair as they age, then it's probable that you will too...having said that, if the men tend to retain their nape hair, that's a good sign that you will not lose it.

It does appear that you have the beginning signs of diffusion in the very center of the whirl in your crown...keep an eye on it and if it gets worse, then low dose finasteride works very efficiently in the crown...discuss with your doctor.

Thank you and all others that posted. Yes that was my biggest worry is if I recede further it will be potentially needed in the crown. As it appears my dad and grandpa and moms dad shave a lot so I could never really tell but my dad does appear to have stubble in his nape. I currently take low dose finasteride(1mg) sometimes I worry my body may get tolerated to that and I’ll lose so I started taking that at 21 but who knows maybe I should do dut. Either way it appears the nape hair really doesn’t have much effects in future hair transplants so I may go ahead an laser remove it for my sanity lol

If down the line you start having temple and front hairline recession than nape hair might be an option, as long as there truly are no signs of your neck area "balding upwards" in a NW6/7 pattern.  If you start to have strong hair loss back there then there is no point using it as donor since it will not stay permanently anywhere else it gets transferred to.  I'd wait and see if you actually do suffer hair loss and re-assess at that point.  From what you've shown there doesn't seem to be anything to address right now.

Thank you I’ll probably just hold off. My hairline is recessed Norwood 3 but my crown is minimal if any hair loss currently. But at 22 and having a grandpa who went bald around then I assume it definitely will progress further so don’t want to get rid of hair that could be used

    Baldingat22,

i’m a little unsure about what you are asking. Are you saying that because you have exceptionally thick neck hair that you want to use it for transplanting? Based on your photos, and I believe I’ve seen and responded to a post of yours on another topic… You do not seem to be a candidate for hair transplant surgery. Not only are you exceptionally young, but you don’t seem to have any signs of hair loss.  That very well may be a cowlick and not thinning hair.  Even if it is minor thinning, I would suggest using medical treatment such as finasteride and minoxidil at this point. I do not believe you are a candidate for surgery at this time.

    best wishes,

    Rahal Hair Transplant

I’m mostly asking would neck hair ever be used in procedure. I am not bald yet in the crown(probably because I’m still pretty young(22)) but I do shave once a week and hate shaving my neck hair so I was looking into laser hair removal so I wouldn’t have to use the razor down that far. I just didn’t want to go through with something like that and then one day need that neck hair potentially for a Hair Transplant or Eyebrow Transplant procedure. I mainly ask because I didn’t know if in modern day HT neck hair is used at all and if so then I would forgo getting rid of it and keep it in case I balled further and did not have enough grafts in donor area to support that balding.

More likely in the crown…BTW, how does your crown look?

This is my crown. I am 22 though so a lot could change take finasteride 1mg daily for 1 year. Moms side went bald at this time dad and his dad no further balding past maybe Norwood 3 but that didn’t happen until well into their 60s.

  12. Genuinely curious question I grow an insane amount of neck hair. Like enough you could create facial hair for people. I also have facial hair but I kind of want to do laser hair removal because I’m tired of shaving neck hair. Where could neck hair be used. I am a Norwood 3 and could definitely go further but where do they use neck hair? Like would I be fine getting rid of it or can it be used for hairline/temple/crown? Thanks

The forum has compiled a list of the best surgeons, feel free to use our list as a starting point for research, you can also submit photos for consultations.

Thank you I actually tried a couple on there and it said I couldn’t send a request through external site or something like that.

Konior, Nadimi, Shapiro, H&W from the North America side.

Do they do beard as well? I have a very minor scar on chin from a childhood injury and have great facial hair but it doesn’t grow there so didn’t know if they could just do that while I’m there lol

Call me crazy, but Minoxidil grew my eyebrows a TON!  I applied morning and evening, just used finger to rub minoxidil into them.  I started using it 6 months before my HT:

But after that I stopped and lost quite a lot if it.  So maybe gotta stay on longer for it to go terminal, or maybe even never go off.

Curious would oral minox do the same? Those are great results

  16. Probably been asked before but I trust this group more than google honestly lol but as a guy can I try to have kids while on either fin/dut or will the kid have birth defects? Like do I have to get off either of those if trying to have a kid and if so how long?
