  1. My natural hair has not been curly but fairly straight. It could be that my hair is turning grey and the texture is different than when I was younger. What's new is I haven't had a hairline for many years so maybe my new "normal" is a little curly. I wouldn't call my donor hair as "curly" but I guess it does have a slight bend to it.

I used a top-tier surgeon who is very highly recommended on this and other forums as well. This is not a "mis-angled" issue as it's not the angle of the hair but the hair itself having a slight bend to it. You might call it "frizzy" but I'm seeing a slight curl to the hair. Yes, I am VERY happy with the results - better than expected - very natural, dense and thick. I can try to provide pics as well.

  2. I had a HT almost 6 months ago. The new hair looks great! Very dense and full. I'm extremely happy with the results thus far but the new hair is curly. I like it but my "normal" hair was a lot straighter. Does the new hair typically come in curly then straighten out over time? As I mentioned, it's been 6 months post op. Just curious.

I would abstain from any heavy lifting that puts strain on your neck. You don’t wanna stretch the scar. I wouldn’t do anything that strains the neck for at least 6 months.

Thanks for the response. If I cannot do bench press, are the following lifts safe two months after an FUT?

    - Bicep Curls
    - Dead Lifts with Light Weight (~100 lbs)

    Hairyharry,

A baseball cap should work just fine in protecting your newly transplanted scalp from the sun.  I employed this method several times as I had for hair transplants. After the first one I actually went to the beach two days later which admittedly wasn’t the best idea in the world.  But I already had scheduled plans with friends amd I didn’t want to cancel.   My transplant and my scalp were very well protected although it was quite hot and I did sweat.   Sweating won’t hurt anything but it can make your scalp itch and scratching isn’t a good idea.

Long story short, a baseball cap will work just fine and protecting yourself from the sun however, make sure that there is no mesh material on top. I find that the fitted hats work the best but it needs to be a lose for for the first week.

    Best wishes,

My office desk faces floor to ceiling windows. Although it faces north and I'm not getting direct sunlight there is sunlight coming into the room. Is there any concern about UV damaging my newly transplanted hair from this or is the concern only with a sunburn from direct sunlight?

Thanks for your response. This is exactly what I was looking for!

I had my second HT about 2 months ago. Well I had my car windows tinted a few years ago. Yes, I do spray sunscreen on my scalp and then rub it for thorough coverage. Note that I use sunscreen frequently and application to my scalp is a new regimen for me now.

OP: "Do baseball caps sufficiently protect the recipient area after HT?" Short of tinting my car windows and using sunscreen on my scalp, will a baseball cap sufficiently protect the recipient area 1-6 months after HT?

I was told the harm comes from direct sunlight so driving in a car should be fine unless you have a sunroof open.

Thanks for the response. I always wear a hat when outside. I guess my question is "As long as I wear a hat outside, does that fully protect the recipient site?" I suspect the answer is "yes" but looking for confirmation if true. Thanks

  8. Do baseball caps sufficiently protect the recipient area after HT?

I'm 1 month post-op and I've tried to limit sun exposure. When I'm forced to go outside or drive I wear a baseball cap to protect my recipient area from the sun.
I have not been outside long enough to get a sunburn although I've driven for a couple of hours in my car and wore a baseball cap the entire time.
    Is that safe?

    Don't worry, you're fine

Was there any bleeding? Either way, nothing can remove your grafts from scalp now. In fact they can't even be removed permanently by manual extraction punch because there is a 70% chance they grow back

Yes, a little bleeding. Small area, mostly scraped the skin and caused a slight bump/bruise.
So mad at myself! I've been super careful and have done everything I was told to do. Ugh!
At least I'm 1 most post-op and didn't do this in the first week. I just hope I didn't damage the graft/root.

    Hairyharry,

Every hair transplant surgeon has their own unique set a postoperative instructions. However, personally I showered a couple times a day after the 5th day and while in the shower, I would gently apply shampoo on my scalp, let it sit for a couple minutes and wash it off. Then I would apply conditioner gently, let it sit for a couple minutes and then I would begin working off the scabs with the conditioner still in my hair.

Ultimately, I would use both of my hands and gently massage the scabbed area with my fingertips (not the nails) in a circular motion. I would do this all over the scalp, especially the scabbed area and after several minutes, I would rinse the scalp and then repeat.  I would do this for approximately 15 minutes to a half hour depending on how I felt the progress was going. I was never forceful with any of the scabs and would use logic and common sense to ensure none of the grafts were damaged/dislodged.

The reason I would apply the shampoo first and then let the conditioner sit on my scalp for a few minutes before beginning to massage the area in a circular motion was to allow the shampoo and conditioner to moisten the scalp and loosen the scabs.

I had a total of four hair transplants and by the third one I was an expert at removing scabs quite quickly without causing any damage to the grafts.  But like I said, every surgeon has their own unique set of postoperative instructions and it’s always best to follow them.

That said, the above was my personal technique which seemed to work well for me.

    Very helpful, thanks!

no, they wanted me to use some silver or copper spray thing, that was like a water that would dry. unfortunately, I didn't know about it on my first 2 transplants.  It's the 3rd one when I did the ointment, and didn't have scabs or shock loss. If I recall correctly, I saw it on some forum, years ago, and it stuck with me.

It seems like HT post-op is not (yet) an exact science. Depending on who you talk to you get different answers and suggestions for post-op procedures. Some say the grafts are fully secure after 7 days, others say 10 to 14 days. That's a big difference. As far as the best way to manage/treat scabs, I've heard and read at least a dozen different approaches. Maybe it's just me being an engineer. I expect well understood and documented procedures. 🙂
