I suppose it effects us all differently but i personally would be lost without it.
Youre lucky then. I feel trapped. Damned if i do, Damned if i dont. I can take propecia and have hair to attract mates so I'm never in the mood to be intimate. Or i could be a typical sex crazed man with no hair to attract a mate.

I guess it depends on how reputable the doctors are. I went to Nuhart and was able to bargain thousands off the asking price. The Doctor was relatively new though. I cant say i got the best or worst results since I have never been to another HT office and i have no basis for comparison. Although I was not completely satisfied with transplant #1. The second one was much better.

Thanks for sharing your stories. I've only taken 7 tablets over the course of 2 weeks (alternate days), but I already don't like the sexual side effects - loss of pleasure. I've decided to quit taking them and just get hair transplants periodically and wait for a cure.
-
So I've been on Propecia for a whole 2 weeks now taking the 1mg pill every other day. I've read many post about lower sex drive and decreased watery ejaculation. So I knew the risk. I immediately noticed lower libido and sensation. Hopefully this will go away. I've also read it takes about a year to see any regrowth, but I'm a little puzzled why I'm still shedding so much each day. Since the med "immediately" blocks DHT, shouldn't I see the benefits of less hair falling out pretty quickly?
Can you seasoned propecia folks comment on the gradual progression of benefits? i.e. saw less shedding by 1 month, saw regrowth at 6 months, side effects went away at 6 months etc? I'd like to track milestons and know if im progressing normally relative to the majority (I know everyone is different).
Thanks.

Ask your HT doc for prescription anti-itch medication. You need something stronger.

I would agree with what Aaron said. That is how we prescribe it at our practice, and also direct them to Wal-Mart for the cheapest price, since they have this "one-price-for-all-generic-meds" policy, and their wholesale source is a reliable manufacturer of generics. Some of the doctors who still insist on prescribing Propecia in its brand-name, 1mg form will say that the amount in each quarter of the mg tablet broken up will be different. But it doesn't matter, because, while each quarter averages 1.2mg (more than the 1mg in the Propecia tablet), Merck's own studies showed a significant decrease in DHT with only 0.2mg a day dose, which is less than one-sixth of a quarter tablet's med, so, even if there is some slight variation from quarter tab to quarter tab, there is a huge cushion that insures you get enough. The medication works for around 3 days in the body, so my routine has been to recommend a quarte tablet every other day for men under 30 and Monday-Wednesday-Friday (3 days a week) dosage schedule for those over 30. I don't tend to push it for men over 50, but will if they ask about it.
Mike Beehner, M.D.
Dr. Beehner - It looks like your practice is not too far away from me in CT. Would I be able to make a consultation with you to assess my current hairloss and get a prescription for Proscar to replace my current Propecia meds?
-
I totally agree. But the challenge is knowing which doctor will prescribe Proscar in Connecticut. I mean, do i just keep making consultations at $100+ a pop until a doctor agrees to prescribe me Proscar?
-
So I called my HT doc and requested finesteride. I asked for Proscar, he said no and gave me a prescription for Propecia. Got it filled at CVS. $97 for a 30 day supply??!! My jaw dropped! For the folks that are currently on Propecia, where do you buy your meds? Online? What is a trust worthy site to get Propecia cheaper? I googled, but i dont trust the majority of the websites because they either look shady or come from another country.
If I cant get it cheaper than I'll just pass on the meds because $97/month for life is tough to swallow.
-
Thanks for the replies. I understand the risk and I am willing to take a chance and try finesteride, but the thing stopping me is the price of propecia. I want to use proscar as so many have suggested. But I do not know how to get proscar from a doctor to hairloss reason. I live in CT. Can someone nearby tell me how they got their proscar?
-
Ive always had it recommended by GP's. They usually say "you could take propecia, but if you want to save some money, I suggest getting proscar"
Don't you need a dermatologist or hair loss doctor to prescribe hair loss treatments? I mean, would my primary care doc give it to me?
-
So ive been reading many suggestions on this site for men with MPB to immediately get on finesteride.
I'm 33 now and have been very slowly losing hair just in the hairline region since I was 16. I'm a slow balder
In the past 3 years I have had 2 transplants totalling 1700 grafts and the coverage is excellent. You really cant tell I am losing hair unless you look super close up.
I have been avoiding finesteride because I dont like medicine in general, and the potential for permanent sexual side affects is too scary.
But I think I may bite the bullet and try finesteride because the hairloss will just get worse. I called the transplant doctor's office today and asked him to write me a prescription, and they said we can give you propecia. I replied can you give me Proscar instead because i've read online the pill can be cut up and it's much cheaper for the same thing. They said "we only give propecia, ill have to check with the doctor if he is willing to prescribe proscar.
How did all of you get Proscar? Did your doctor's give you a hard time about it?

i buzz my back and sides short, but long enough to hide the scar. I am always afraid in well lit situations, people will still see my scar. So I do not like it when people stand behind me in line. As for the front, i am afraid of a very sunny day

Why did you say "do not get body hair on your head"?
Do not get body hair on your head. Do not try lasers. Do not do anything. I think ultimately you should try shaving your head and see how that looks. -
What do you have to say for yourself DOCTOR BOLTON??!!! (taps foot)
-
The only thing you should "eat" to prevent further hair loss is a Propecia 1MG pill on a daily basis.
HAHA thanks, i actually laughed out loud

Why do you even have to tell a HT youre HIV positive to begin with?

I think it depends on the skill of the person removing the sutures. Ive had 2 surgeries and the first lady yanked out some hair during remove so yea it hurt. But second time, it was more of a tickling sensation.
-
In your case it may not be graft rejection, but i think i lost a few hairs that had stinging pains, and it hurt to the point where i would have to squeeze it and a puss and little blood comes out. So in my case, it was a lost graft. The odd thing was, this happened even weeks after my surgery. But as mentioned before, it was only 3 or 4 grafts. And it happend both times for 2 seperate surgeries. Weird.....
-
during my recover i had a few hairs that were painful like a stinging sensation. i think it was a graft rejection or a minor infection because some discharge came out after a few days of pain. I've had 2 transplants and both times, at least 3 or 4 incidents of this stinging pain occured.

Makes sense. But I dont have much facial hair lol. Im the typical non-hairy Asian guy. I'll talk to my doctor and see if my lack of beard hair is even enough to make a difference on my head. Thanks!
If you really do not want to use your scalp donor hair for FUE into the scar I would recommend chin hair before armpit hairs. There are thicker and have a better chance of surviving and helping to camouflauge the scar compared to the thinner kinky underarm hairs. -
I want to fue repair my trico scar, but don't want to use my donor hair for that. Since I am naturally smooth (i.e. no chest, arm, or leg hair), would it be possible to use arm pit hair? I mean, its useless hair in its current location, and its just used to conceal the scar. I dont have much facial hair either, but am willing to sacrifice whats inbetween my chin and neck hair too.

I remember that Upenn story. I was very excited. Im still waiting......
-
The scar will heal the redness, but if anything, the scar will stretch more overtime. So if it looks like this now in 3 months, the prognosis is probably not great. It took me close to a year before the color balanced again, so no worries there.
Might be worthwhile to consider FUE to fill in the scar after it has completely healed? Or other scar repair techniques. Goodluck. I would def not shave my head as that scar would attract a lot of unwanted attention the way it looks now.

Sorry, starting hairloss at 14 really blows. I started noticing hair falling out excessively towards the front hairline at 16, but I was fortunate it kept growing back fast and I was a only a norwood 3-ish by the time I was 30, then was able to get a HT at 31.
I agree with other posters, I think based on your picture you can pull off a shaved head and Goatee look that so many women (or men) seem to like nowadays. A buff body wouldt hurt either

just mix salt and water in a spray bottle. Thats what my doc instructed me to do. You dont need to buy anything special
