My story,

I first noticed I was losing my hair when I was 22, I was in a changing room with three way mirrors and spotted a small thinning bald spot. I tried lots of different herbal remedies, but nothing seamed to halt the hair loss.

I started on finasteride at 26 for five years, with no sides effects. During that time my hair loss stopped but I didn't notice any re-growth. I stopped finasteride four and a half years ago aged 31 to start a family. During that time I lost a lot of hair, mostly around the crown area

I then started on regaine and nizoral two years ago aged 34 but didn’t notice any slowing down or regrowth. I had now finished having children so decided to start finasteride again aged 35, hoping that I might be able to regrow a little of the huge amount of hair that I had lost on my crown. Monitoring my hair loss over the last year, I noticed that the loss had slowed down and there had been a very mirror bit of thickening around the crown area, but I still had a large bald spot on my crown. I have been using concealing fibres for over three years, and think I has just about been getting away with it! But the only real solution would be a HT. I’ve been toying with the idea of a hair transplant for the last few years and decided six months ago that I would go for it.

Fast forward six months and after lots of research and deliberating I decided to go for a FUE procedure with Dr Villnow in Germany. Having had a few consultations with different clinics in the UK, the communicating with the Villnow clinic felt like I was making the right decision travelling to Germany. Dr Villnow would perform the operation himself and could do the procedure un-shaven, which was a major factor in deciding on a clinic.

I have just had the operation, which I wanted to concentrate on my crown area, as this was the area that caused me the most concern. I had 1900 grafts to the crown, 500 grafts to the left temple and 300 to the right.

The whole experience of the clinic was great, extremely professional, modern and clean. Dr Villnow was extremely calming and we sat and discussed my requirements prior to the operation. I was then taken to have my donor area shaved followed by the harvesting. It took about 3 hours for Dr Villnow and two of his team to extract 2700 grafts. It was mainly pain less, and on the few occasions that I felt a small amount of pain the team topped up my local anaesthetic. After the extraction phase was complete I had a break for some lunch in the room provided by the clinic, which was a nice modern room just down the corridor form the operating room.

After lunch, Dr Villnow started creating the holes for the grafts to be inserted. This took about an hour and was totally pain free. The grafts were then reinserted by Dr Villnow and his team which took about another three hours. I then had my head washed and the donor area was dressed. Room service was then delivered to my room and I spent the evening resting and watching TV. Next morning I had my hair washed again and the nurse applied a new dressing to the donor area for travelling, I removed the dressing myself when I arrived home.

Just a waiting game now, I will keep the post updated as things progress. " These are my week one photos.
