What would make a good hair loss treatment before hair transplant surgery?

I am just curious. Before one jumps into hair transplant surgery, is there any treatment that would be good to try first? Not just any random treatment, I want something that is also reliable, aside from medications. I would like to avoid the side effects and I would like to see if anything works before I ultimately consider hair transplant surgery.
