Hair Loss Blood Work?

Hi,

I am thinking of going to ask my GP for blood work to see if there are underlying reasons for my hair loss apart from male pattern baldness.

My question is really, what tests will I need to ask for and is he likely to do this?

I do take Propecia but I've never had any proper examination as such, apart from my hair transplant one.

Thanks.

Hi London81. Identifying your current hair loss and documenting its progression is a vital part of finding your most beneficial treatment plan. Another consideration that may be helpful to you is receiving a second consultation with a reputable hair restoration specialist. If your hair loss is suspected not to be in a typical male pattern, your doctor may order a chemistry blood test to check for amounts of certain elements made in the body. I hope there is something here that is helpful to you with deciding your next course of action.

My opinions are based on my beliefs and are simply my own. I am one representative of the WHTC clinic.

Hi London,

Really no defined "hair loss" blood panel. However, most would probably recommend checking: TSH (thyroid), total and free testosterone, estradiol, DHEA(S), CBC (to assess anemia), vitamin D, iron, and MAYBE DHT, ANA, and prolactin. However, most of these wouldn't be overly helpful or telling in a suspected case of androgenic alopecia (especially the last few). This is generally a clinical diagnosis made by a good physical examination of the scalp.

We will see what your doctor recommends - and I do suggest following his/her advice!
