  1. Well, the transection rate with FUT is close to zero with the use of the Haber Spreader and microscopic dissection. With FUT we can directly visualize the hair follicles and thus preserve them. No FUE procedure can come close to that, as FUE is essentially a blind harvest. At the start of every FUE procedure, the surgeon will experiment with harvest angle, depth, and punch rotation, oscillation and more until grafts come out intact. But still, not all follicles in all areas of the scalp have the same orientation. My transection rate with FUE is 5-8%, sometimes less, and very rarely more.

Yes I generally make recipient sites before harvesting grafts, so that my staff can implant grafts at the same time I am harvesting.

  2. As with most things, it depends. One of the great aspects of HT surgery compared with say a busy Derm clinic is the opportunity to get to know our patients, which cannot happen in a 5 minute office visit. My techs do not talk to each other about what they're making for dinner or how their date was last night. Rather they are talking with the patient, and by the end of a long day everyone knows an awful lot about each other! I usually place about half of the grafts myself and enjoy learning about careers I never knew existed. I have become good friends with quite a few patients over the years. If a patient prefers to watch TV we offer all streaming services as well.

  3. I think this is a great example of a case where FUT (strip surgery) would be preferable to FUE, as long as you are willing to grow your hair longer to hide the harvest scar. If you undergo 3000+ FUE grafts, you might have a see through donor area and that would not look good. With FUT however, you could easily have 4000+ grafts harvested over two sessions, achieve excellent cosmetic results up front, and easily hide your donor scar with longer hair +/- SMP.

If keeping your hair this length is a priority, I agree with a very conservative approach, and even consider a fully shaved look, again with SMP to achieve a very nice masculine look.
