  1. Input from those who know about side effects of proscar/propecia indicate that side effects relating to sexual dysfunction may very well go away after 3 to 4 months. I'm now using proscar at a reduced dosage and still having all the side effects, but willing to go longer to see if things stabilize. Does anyone know about the side effect of swelling in the stomach area -- is there the same chance that it too will go away as well as the libido problem?

  3. I've been taking proscar for 2 to 3 weeks; splitting the tablet into quarters and taking one quarter every day. Now I find that according to Merck proscar has a hiher inicidence of side effects -- about 8%, than propecia, which has about 2%. I have definitely been experiencing the libido side effects as well as the weight gain in the stomach area. Should I reduce the proscar dosage or just switch to propecia even though it's costlier just to make sure to avoid the side effects. Or is it just the finasteride, which is in both that's causing side effects?

  5. Thanks guys.

Based on many inputs I have received I have

pretty much decided to go with Dr. Shapiro

himself or Dr. Hasson. And I am willing

to wait for mu turn with either doctors

    (Small price !)

The decision between the two is going to

be difficult and I will base it on feedback

from the esteemed members, references and

speaking to the doctors themselves on the

    following specifics :

1.) The doctors opinion on what they will do for me, in terms of hairline and frontal density.

Dr. Shapiro has some good white papers on hairline

    work and reconstruction.

2.) The general feedback I get on hairline and

frontal work skills of both these doctors.

No more consideration of other doctors.

    Any feedback is appreciated.

I'm trying to make the same kind of decision. What made you go with Hasson?

  7. I'm definitely leaning towards a hair transplant at H&W. Problem -- I'd like to make a decision about who to schedule it with. How do I intelligently decide this without going for a consult beforehand? I've been told that one is better at dense packing than the other, one better at coverage. I'm rather new at this, so not even sure what is more important in my case. I'm 57, Norwood 4A, present density of hair is avg, texture fine to mixed, scalp is on the tight side. Bottom line -- I want as much as can be done in one session.

Any help from H&W patients much appreciated!

  8. L-Arginine helps the body produce Nitric Oxide, which is involved in getting an erection.

The issue here, however, is that the sexual side effects of Finasteride have nothing to do with N.O. Loss of libido is not going to be affected by NO, and even a problem getting an erection wouldn't be affected by N.O, because Finasteride has nothing to do with N.O.

So I don't think Arginine is going to help. But it is cheap, so it may not hurt to try it. But if it works for you, then maybe your problem may be more psychological than being due to Finasteride. I think it is possible that some guys can hear about side effects, and they might subconsciously expect them. I'm not suggesting you're an example of that, though.

I agree with Matthew, what I have heard is the side effects usually go away over a couple weeks' time. If they don't, think about dropping down to a half dose or taking it every other day... discuss this with your doctor.

You could also try Tribulis terrestis, an herb that stimulates your body to increase testosterone. That should help your libido, but it may be counter-productive for your hair.

I would try to ride this out, if you can.

If you want to try Arginine, try taking about 3 grams (3000 mg) on an empty stomach, with a glass of water. I recommend buying the capsules and not getting the tablets, the caps digest a lot better.
