If it's cool enough weather wise where you are and it's fashionable, I'd go with a stocking cap that wasn't snug.

I'm not much of a hat guy so in the sun post op, well after that initial period of course, I'd use a spf mist spray. But mostly kept my sun exposure to a minimum.

Oh the stocking cap and spf mist spray are both really good ideas, thanks mate

  2. Hey all,

I have a few questions regarding hats and FUE. Obviously avoiding sun exposure is really important, so just want to make sure I have an array of appropriate hats to wear for months after my surgery.

What types of hat should I be wearing post op?

What types of hat should I avoid post op?

I don’t want to wear anything that might irritate the grafts or scalp. Thanks guys.

Hello, all you have to do is sleep on your back with the neck pillow around your neck. I suggest you practice it two nights in a row before procedure just to get used to it

An airplane neck pillow is great because even if you somehow turn while you sleep, you do not risk yourself from brushing grafts against the pillow.

Do not stress yourself too much about sleeping. There is far bigger chance of damaging grafts while you're awake rather than while sleeping. Some people on this forum have hit their head or lost grafts in other ways, I have not yet seen anyone lose grafts while sleeping

Good luck with your procedure, take it easy

Thanks for your reply. I’m wondering if sleeping upright is fine though if I decided to do this instead of laying down. e.g. sleeping upright on a sofa (with an airplane pillow).

  4. Might seem like a bit of a silly question, but is it fine to sleep at a 90 degree angle whilst recovering from an FUE procedure? (For example, sleeping upright on a sofa with a neck pillow behind you).

Could this hinder the final result / increase swelling etc? Or is the only danger just getting a bit of a sore back?

Or is it essential to sleep laying down at a 45 degree angle but being propped up with pillows?

    thanks

If you feel that you have benefited from finasteride to the point that it has halted your MPB then I probably wouldn't bother with oral minoxidil. After all finasteride is blocking the cause (DHT) where as minoxidil is a stimulant to the hair follicle. All the best.

Yeah I dont think my hair loss has progressed since being on fin so assuming it’s working. I feel like a lot of people place emphasis on ‘stacking’ treatments so I was wondering if it’s needed in order to get a good HT result.. but if finasteride + a really good doctor is enough then I’m happy with that route.

Rogaine actually has zero effect for many guys. Even if it does have an effect, its super high maintenance and IMO won't even move the needle that much.

Yeah I won’t be using rogaine, I'm considering oral minoxidil but just unsure as to whether it’ll have much of an impact on my future HT result.

I’ve read a few posts on here where the dr has got the patient on oral minoxidil post-transplant but just not really sure if it’s a necessity..

  8. I need a bit of advice guys.

I’m taking oral fin currently (been on it for 1 year): no sides, its halted further loss and has thickened up some existing hairs that were miniaturising.

My next step is to get a HT to fill in the bald/thinning areas. My dilemma is that I’m wondering if a stimulant (e.g. minoxidil) is necessary to get a successful HT result? Or should the halted loss from fin + transplant be enough to achieve (and maintain) a full head of hair.

I’m considering oral minoxidil, but I’m just unsure if it’s a necessity considering Fin seems to be working well.

Any advice / input is appreciated!

I wanted to wait about 3 days post-op i believe at least. Overall i would recommend a day or two and when flying or getting into any type of vehicle, take extreme care. I was a bit off balance myself after Day 1 and i think that affected me because getting into the car i misjudged it and hit my head. 100% lost at least 1 multi graft if not more unfortunately but definitely one.

It hurts thinking back on it but i figure in the grand scheme of things, that was the only incident in terms of hitting my head BUT i think the first 7 days and trying to sleep upright are the toughest. I woke up with a neck pillow sideways and i was out of the position i put myself in to sleep.

So overall, i don't think travelling in the plane due to air pressure is the issue, you got far bigger problems to worry about with the overhead baggage compartments, other people and even the toilets. I tried my best to also use saline spray during the flight but i do think at some point i ended up asleep. Overall, just try your best to be careful and know, international travel is the tougher cookie. If you can, stay a week for peace of mind.

Hey man, thanks for your response. Makes total sense what you’re saying. My flight would only be about 2 hours but it still makes me a bit nervous because I have no idea how I’ll feel after the surgery (think mine will be 3 days). To be honest, maybe I’ll just book an air bnb for 10 days or something, it’ll be more expensive but maybe worth staying put until the grafts are 100% fixed to my head 😅

d+1 is fine, although i wouldn't say so for the same day you have your op.

i suggest minimum 3 days, since the first 3 is when they're settling down, and it'd be harder to dislodge them.
7 if you want to be safe.

Okay thanks, I’ll have a think about it. 3 days seems reasonable but I guess that’s when the swelling will potentially get quite bad, I may just stay put until day 7 post op as hopefully things would’ve calmed down by then?

Many people fly the day after so I highly, highly doubt there is any issue. If there was a reputable surgeon wouldn't allow it or advise against it. The biggest risk is that you bump your head somewhere. For example getting in/out of the taxi or someone dropping his/her bag on your head when opening the overhead compartment etc.

Okay thanks, I’ll just ask the clinic to make sure.

If you’re worried strong wind will come and fly away with your hairs, rest assured there’s no danger of that.

The answer to this is the sooner you feel comfortable. Some people don’t care walking around with a bloody head/bandages on their head and they leave soon after post op, others stay for a week or more.

The hairs are pushed in deep into the skin so the only way they come off is by washing or touching. Wind/walking around poses no danger.

I’d be slightly concerned if there were large gusts of wind coming from inside the plane! Haha.

The concern I had is more around the actual air pressure that occurs when flying, I read online that it can drastically increase swelling and I was wondering what effect that could have on the grafts (if any). Maybe I’d feel comfortable flying 5 days or so after the surgery but I’ll see.

  13. Okay, I know this might sound a little silly as people probably fly all the time after getting a hair transplant, but how many days post-transplant should I wait before flying? I’m concerned that the air pressure could somehow damage the grafts / cause more inflammation if it’s too soon after surgery.

I’ve read a few contrasting opinions on this online so would be good to get further input from you guys.

It will be a 2 hour flight approx if that makes any difference.

  14. After years of researching and saving, I’m finally in a position to get my first hair transplant.

Unfortunately, due to the fact that I’m mixed and have curly hair, the pool of doctors that I have to pick from is extremely small, but I’m determined to go with one of the best!

I’m in the process of trying to get a graft estimate / consultation from one specific recommended clinic but this is proving to be difficult. They initially replied to me 2 weeks ago when I sent my photos, informing me that the best option would be to pay for a video consultation so that I can get a graft estimate and discuss my case with the doctor - of course I agreed and asked if they can send me an available date - I haven’t heard anything since.

I have sent a follow up email in a timely manner (after 4 working days) but they still won’t respond. I’m not really sure what to do at this point, I understand clinics are busy but is it normal to wait 8+ days for a response to a simple enquiry? I am feeling a bit stuck.

  15. Hey all, I’ve been on here for a while, researching etc. For some reason I’m unable to send direct messages. I just tried and received the message ‘you’re allowed to send 0 messages per day, please try again later’. Not sure how to fix it :/
