  1. I find the tone of some of the comments on this thread really disturbing. I know many people here have an agenda, but I do not read a hidden agenda into this situation. From Peterth's profile he is in Texas and travelling to Florida to see Dr. Charles. He looked up the physician and found some confusing information, and came here ask people's opinions. He even says that he will ask Dr. Charles in person about this and report back. It looks like he has taken the advise of this forum and done his research - many hair transplant physicians are not affiliated with a hospital or a medical system and it is buyer beware. He has raised a legitimate issue about one of the recommended physicians, which is not an administrative issue. He has been measured in his comments, and asked for help interpreting confusing information. I really look forward to Dr. Charles clearing this situation up, and hope Peterth finds support in his decision of a hair transplant physician in this community.
  2. I would not speculate on what happened here or assume other peoples motivations and just stick to the facts. There is no reason this other person should be prescribing under Dr. Charles' name - the case revolves how much Dr. Charles knew about what was going on.
  3. I googled: "Glenn Charles" letter of reprimand If you select the lexis nexus link you can read about this. This was recent - November 16th that it was reported. This was not a clerical issue. I agree that Dr. Charles has been helpful on this forum.
  4. Hi, 22 is really young to be losing so much hair. I would worry that hair transplants won't give you an age-appropriate appearance at 22 that can last for the rest of your life. What you need is a look which suits you now, and will either be temporary, or look good for the rest of your life. Your hair is pretty short, have you thought about shaving it down a bit more and doing temporary scalp micropigmentation? That way in 5 or 10 years you can reassess your hair loss situation, see if propecia has worked and plan a hair restoration strategy (and maybe there will be more novel treatments available!).
  5. I've lived in the UK in the past, and I will say there is a certain paternalism ('I know what's best for you and I'm not going to listen to you') that can creep into physician-patient encounters rather than a more partnering for health. I'm in the US and I just went to my PCP (GP). We talked about the advantages and potential side effects. He told me that the 1mg tablets (Propecia) were still not available as generic, but prescribed 5mg finasteride and told me to quarter them with a pill cutter and not worry too much if the pieces weren't exact. My suggestion would be to find another GP if you can, or visit a physician privately and fill the prescription not using the NHS obviously. I have not had to do this - but I cringe about all the people getting these drugs online - you can never know what you are getting.
  6. There may or may not be a lot of comments and pseudoscience comments here on finasteride. Look at reputable websites (A good one is Dr. Bernstein's in NY, Google Bernstein Medical Hair Transplant). He has a good page on hair loss medications. Also read the package insert. I took it for 8 years with no side effects, stopped it (big mistake, and for no good reason than thinking maybe I really didn't have hair loss), and have restarted it.
  7. Talk to your doctor about getting a prescription for generic proscar (finasteride). This is the same medication as Propecia but comes in a 5mg tablet. You can quarter it using a $5 pill cutter. 30 tablets (a 4 month supply) will probably cost $20-$60. There is some chatter about the generic finasteride not working as well as brand-name Proscar, but if you get it through a US pharmacy with a prescription it is vetted by the FDA.
  8. The study about no increased risk of death from prostate cancer came out in August.
  9. Thank you for sharing your experience. It really does look like he did a great job from your pictures. It's nice to hear from prior patients. I go back and forth as to which one, but am going to wait and think about it for a few months. They both have different approaches and I'll have to decide which one works best for me. Maybe it would be better to flip a coin and get the decision over with .
  10. This was my gut feeling too . . . and I couldn't find anything from patient reviews or results to guide me one way or the other! I guess finding two hair transplant physicians you think would do a great job is a good problem to have! I was going to visit with a few more, but I don't think I'd feel more comfortable with anyone else (but perhaps as comfortable). My thoughts on meeting both of them: Dr. Bernstein: Will give the best hair transplant he can, employs the best techniques even if the gain is small. Dr. Beehner: I think he has a good feel for hair transplant, good techniques and from many years of experience knows what works and does not work. While both seemed excellent in the art and science of transplanting, I think Dr. Beehner edged out Dr. Bernstein a little on the art of transplanting, and Dr. Bernstein edged Dr. Beehner a little on the science of transplanting.
  11. Hello - I wanted people's thoughts on a few transplant doctors. I'm 40 and have been losing hair for about the past 5 years. I have deep temporal gulfs, thinning on top (but very narrow), and a pretty small area of crown thinning (all on the top, none going down the back of my head). To be specific (and mangle a quote from Dr. Bernstein's website): I've never had a sunburn on the top of my head, and my hair still keeps me warm . I started finasteride and minoxodil 3-4 months ago and had a pretty good shedding / thinning phase which seems to have now stopped, and now things are feeling a little fuller. No side effects at all. I've visited a few doctors, two of whom I feel very comfortable with: Dr. Beehner in Saratoga Springs and Dr. Bernstein in NYC. They both pretty much said the same thing, 2600-3000 grafts to cover up to the vertex transition and Dr. Beehner thought a few in the crown. My donor area has no miniturization, is large and has a lot of multi-haired follicular units. Dr. Bernstein's hairline was a little more conservative than Dr. Beehner's, and Dr. Beehner spoke about some double follicular unit grafts (but would do all FU). There was only about 1/2cm difference in the hairlines - which to be honest does not make much difference to me as I've always had a high hairline. From the forum's here I was expecting a more conservative hairline from Dr. Bernstein. Dr. Beehner's office is easier for me to get to, but Dr. Bernstein's isn't bad either. I know the standard is for single FU grafts, but Dr. Beehner's photographs look very impressive with the DFUs. I've read through experiences here with both surgeons, but would be good to hear from people about how they decided. I'm not rushing into this. Looking at some of the finasteride studies, 90% of people were unchanged or better at 10 years so my goal would be to gain as much density, hairline as possible but if/when the hairloss continues for it to look natural. Specifically: 1. Anyone who has had the DFU grafts with Dr. Beehner, how do they fare over time? 2. Any thoughts on how to decide (other than tossing a coin!)?
