  1. Any recommendations on when to return to light weights training after surgery? Im not talking cross fit training or maxing out on the bench press, im talking healthy, cautious movements at say 70 percent max. Ive heard ranges from 5 days to a few weeks??

    Hello HairHair,

    Given that you are having an FUE procedure. 2 weeks post surgery should be good; if all factors post surgery go well. Take the advice of your chosen HT surgeon. Is your surgery scheduled soon? Keep us posted. Michael

  2. I'm planning on going for a HT and recently consulted two top HT docs both highly recommended on this forum. One recommended an FUE and the other a strip, both recommended between 1500-2000 grafts. I'm tring to consider worst case senario for both options and am wondering if the scar is poor with the strip-how well does FUE into donor scar work to cover it up if I want to keep short hairstyle as an option in the future. Has anyone done it successfully?

    Thanks.

    Hello CautiouslyConsidering,

    FUE transplantation into scar works well. It can also be combined with SMP to render a scar virtually invisible. The nature of the scar is a factor of course. However this practice is becoming popular. Scalp laxity, surgical skill, type of closure are all factors that can reduce scar as well. Here is some information. All the Best, Michael

  3. Hello Stylish Boy,

    1) If you are planning in HT, you might want to save the expense of a Hair System good natural Hair Systems cost thousand of USD. However some of the better ones are very natural looking. However the money might be better spent on your HT.

    2) These hair systems obviously are groomed daily. Maintenance however depends on the type you choose, type of anchoring to your scalp and how fast your hair grows. Maintenance cost average 200 USD per visit. This would be at least once every 3 to 6 weeks.

    3) Modern hair systems respond to environment well. That is why they are popular with men and women who are not eligible for HT.

    4) Personally, if you are going for an HT, i would not recommend putting the costs into a Hair System. The total costs and maintenance for a good system could equal at least one third of your HT cost.

    5) I am not familiar with clinics there so I must leave this response to someone who is.

    6) This is prescription drug that must be prescribed by a bona fide doctor. I would dislike if you were taken advantage of by an online source. All the Best, Michael

  4. Hi, I've been doing hair transplantation research for a number of years on these forums, and have finally decided it's time to go ahead and go through with it. I've recently consulted 2 well known FUE doctors in Southern California, and have been told I need anywhere between 1500-2000 graphs. Today I consulted with Hasson and Wong and was told I will need around 3000 graphs, but of course with Hasson and Wong, it is a FUT operation. I was wondering why there is such a huge difference, is it because its a strip operation? I sent all 3 doctors the same set of pictures.

    I am a 30 year old asian male, who has a very high buzz cut (0 clip), I was wondering if I could get some input from the community, on which doctors to seek out and what operation would be the safer bet, since scarring is going to be big factor on who I choose.

    Thank you!

    Don

    Hello Gemini310;

    I agree with other regarding the variation in graft numbers. These are also just estimates. Given that you like to wear your hair short, it seems FUE is the best route to go so the scar from a 'Strip Method' surgery will show through a close crop of 0, 1 or 2 and perhaps 3. All the Best, Michael

  5. Just out of curiosity, how would doing a cycle of say testosterone affect the outcome of a new hair transplant?

    Assuming, of course, waiting 3-4 months post op when it is considered 'safe' to start lifting heavy again. My main concern is less about native hair and more about the growth of new grafts.

    Just trying to get some information.

    Thanks.

    Hello Spirali08,

    Are you serious? People prone to pattern baldness seem to accelerate this condition on steroids. There are not a lot of studies but many athletes have this complaint. Though your transplanted hair is DHT resistant it seems to be very ill advised to consider taking anabolic steroids following your transplant. It is not advisable to take these potent hormones unless medically required. There are many risk far beyond damaging your HT!

    All the Best, Michael.

  7. Hi All,

    There are some natural remedies for hair loss. A nutrient-deprived diet and a lax attitude to hair can make you bald gradually, although other factors like heredity, medicine-side effects, medical conditions etc. cannot be neglected.

    Food which contains proteins,vitamins,Omega-3 fatty acids, zinc etc are helpful in preventing hair loss. :

    Hello Charles Sam

    Poor diet leads to being under or malnourished. How the negative effects manifest in a person is an individual. It is sufficient to say that if this condition is prolonged body proteins levels are insufficient and the hair, skin and nails which are all made up of keratinized protein can become compromised.

    However, it is IMPORTANT to note that diet does not contribute to pattern baldness in anyway. This is a hereditary genetic condition commonly called Male Pattern Baldness [MPB] in which there are two approved medical treatments and HT which actually resolve the issue of hair loss and many patients with androgenic alopecia (pattern hair loss). There is presently no legitimate research proving that an improved diet can stop or reverse androgenic alopecia.

    If hair loss is not from MPB and is nutritionally based test by a doctor would be necessary to determine this. In the western world instances of the severe under nourishment are rare.

    All the Best, Michael

  8. Is it possible to grow hair long/medium length with FUE? You rarely see cases with longer hair. Something like this julian.jpg

    Hello Jessop;

    This depends on your natural Hair Growth Cycle. If you are able to wear your hair style similar to the pick you post now. A successful FUE is not more than relocating (transplanting) your natural hair follicles into thinning and balding areas. AFter about 9 months to a year, your hair should resume it normal growth cycle. All the Best, Michael

  9. Yeah. I agree. But if you think about it, you don't have to worry about it anymore. I have a hair transplant next week and that's just the start of my road. I'm going to get balder, I'm going to need more hair, I'm going to have to spend even more money in the future. Plus, my results aren't ever going to yield 100% satisfaction unless a miracle cure comes out within the next 15-20 years.

    If you really want, you can go for a micropigmentation. I know you said that you didn't want to do that, but maybe you can try a temporary one. I was talking to Dr Ron Shapiro last week and he told me that Shapiro Medical Group just started offering micropigmentations that last about a year and a half; maybe that's something that you can look into to see if you like it. As far as it being an illusion, who cares? How many people are going to touch your hair? Most of them will only see it from a distance. It could be a possible socially liberating operation for you.

    Hi Everyone;

    Don't despair if you are looking at solutions as far out as a couple of decades one can expect a quantum leap in hair restoration similar or greater than what took place at the turn of this century. Here is some good reading regarding future treatments. All the Best, Michael

  10. "Maybe "How is it different to work on thick/thin hair?" That's a good question Magnum.

    Hello Atticus,

    I cannot speak to the work of an individual physician that I have not observed through a procedure. I can address this question from the general level of the challenge proposed. That is in the extraction of the hair shaft. When hair is exceptionally thick extraction time is generally increased because it is more difficult to isolate an individual follicular unit for extraction. So more effort is definitely is involved in a manual extraction process. Extraction challenge can also lead to more transection (damage) of FUs. ISHRS has established a special FUE committee to address standardization and advancement of FUE. Some of the members are FUE recommended surgeons. You may want to pose your question to one of them or the committee Chairman Dr. Parsa Mohebi, who is also on HTN, hope this helps. All the Best, Michael.

  11. Hello, this is my first post, and I'm 23 years old. Ive been taking propecia for 6 months now, my regime is as follows:

    0.3mg 1 x a week for 2 weeks

    0.3mg 2 x a week for 2 weeks

    0.3mg 3 x a week for 2 weeks

    0.5mg 1 x a week for 2 weeks

    0.5mg 2 x a week for 2 weeks

    0.5mg 3 x a week for 2 weeks

    0.75mg 1 x a week for 2 weeks

    0.75mg 2 x a week for 2 weeks

    0.75mg 3 x a week for 2 weeks

    1mg 3 x a week for 2 weeks

    1mg 4 x a week for 2 weeks

    1mg 5 x a week for 2 weeks

    1mg 6 x a week for 2 weeks

    1mg 7 x a week for....

    I experienced side effects when I started the treatment; however, they wear off.

    In addition, the shedding occurred in a month of so after starting the treatment. On top of that, I used to shed about 40+ hairs every day, my scalp is visible now and there are lot of spots. Moreover, I'm noticing lot of miniaturized hair, in fact, much more than normal hair. In addition to that, I kept losing about 15-30 hair in the past month, which shows some improvements. Also, there is no regrow whats so ever and I'm considering quiting the medication, since I'm not responding to it in a good way. I should also note that I started weight lifting 3-4 months ago, I don't take any steroids etc, but I take Omega-3 fatty acids and Priorin Extra ( expensive hair vitamins), also I should note that my uncle is the only member in the family ( father's side) who is experiencing male pattern baldness, and my mom!, yes she is losing her hair in a diffuse pattern much similar to me. At last, I should note that I had consumed 3 packs of propecia so far ( each has 28 pills or so).

    Hello Devilhunter;

    Your post lends me to have some serious concerns at the level of hair loss you are reporting. !) Regarding Propecia having no effect after 6 months of use, suggest further evaluation and consult is needed to determine if your hair loss is due to androgenic allopecia. 2) Nutritonal supplementation is reassurance against under nourishment but has little to do with pattern baldness. 3) You are reporting diffuse pattern hair loss which initially may indicate other root causes to your hair loss.

    Based on these observations from your post I suggest that you see a hair restoration doctor and have the proper evaluation, tests (if needed) and consult. I look forward to your follow up. All the Best, Michael

  12. I haven't had a proper erection for months. Sometimes it works when I masturbate. What is causing it and what can I do?

    Hello Kevin;

    This question is unusual for the hair loss forum; unless you are using Propecia which lists this as a possible side effect. Are you on this medication and are you receiving treatment from a hair restoration doctor. It is important to report this to him or her. If this is not the case you should know that immediate medical intervention from a qualified physician is the only and best course of action. All the Best, Michael

    Hello Charlesam.

    This is always an interesting discussion and one in which I have done considerable research over the years. To date there is yet a single definitive scientific study linking any specified nutrient directly to hair growth or hair loss prevention. That being said we do know that certain nutrients improve various metabolic process and overall health of the body. It is often said that hair, skin and nails are a good reflection of inner health, although this does not always hold true. So, if a person's diet is undernourished they may note changes in hair, skin and nails by nutritional supplementation of some type. However are you mentioned pattern hair loss is genetic and not treated nutritionally. All the Best, Michael

  14. Hi, I thought I would throw this one to the forum. I'm looking to pull the trigger again as my temple peaks have receded and on one side it has gone completely. Just curious to views on would strip get the right calibre of hair or would fue be best to cherry pick the finer hairs?. I've had 2 strips now and I'm more inclined to carry on and strip out before going down the fue route, however I have very coarse hair so not sure what's the best plan off attack.

    As always appreciate advice and feedback.

    Hello Irish Sailor,

    I understand your dilemma after to Strip. FUE is very good for the type of HT you are suggesting. Important factor would be your transection rate. As long as it is low this would be a very good option for you. I have noted patients in our clinics in similar circumstance for this and be exceptionally happy with the results. Could you post some picks of your temples? A FOX test can be performed to also help determine your suitability for FUE. All the Best, Michael

  15. Hello everyone, I'm currently looking into getting a FUT transplant done. My original goal was to do an FUE, but its too expensive for me being a college student (and yes I know how much it is looked down upon when letting price be a huge factor, but I don't have a choice). I know that doctor expertise has got a lot better, so my question is how big should I expect my scar to be? I also like to keep my hair somewhat short, about a #3 all the way around, will I still be able to do this and will the scar still be visible? I plan on using a cover up product for my scar so I can maybe get away with having short hair. Thank you everybody for you answers in advance :)

    Hello JB,

    There are lot factors that contribute to your scar. At our clinics we often do hair transplant scar revision. So, in case the scar is more than you anticipated you can have it revised in the future at an affordable cost with FUE and or SMP.

    That being said factors contributing to your scar formation are 1) the number of donor hairs required and your own hair density 2) the skill of the surgeon 3) the type of closure used 4) your body's own healing process and tendencies 4) your post-op recovery being normal

    Scarring is so unique but given the best in all factors your scar should not be a mitigating factor in your styling preference. Again, today's scar revision can seriously reduce the appearance of scars. All the Best, Michael

  16. I have been told to stop propecia before my up and coming HT. I understand the reasons for rogaine but not propecia?

    Please discontinue any hair loss medications such as Rogaine (Minoxidil)

    or Propecia (Finasterid) 15-20 days prior to your procedure.

    Hi James,

    I don't know why this is being suggested to you. Our patients typically use finesteride medical treatment pre and post surgery. Who is your surgeon? Are they recommended by HTN? Do you have a condition that may contributing to this caution. Let us know. Very interested to your response and following up. All the Best, Michael

  17. :cool:

    that is very true. most people do not entertain the idea of body hair as scalp hair though,, hence why big body hair sessions are mainly seen in repairs. if we are talking about scalp only hair, than fut generally allows for more. but you are not wrong in what you are saying.

    Hello Gentlemen,

    FUT-Strip Method, because of the harvesting method yields more grafts in a session. However, the number in a Strip Method can be much higher. Actually, there are a number of HTN surgeons who perform what is being turned gigasessions very successfully. The key is not only adequate donor hair but also precise measurement of scalp laxity. Extraction techniques may improve to increase the amount of FUs that can be harvested during an FUT-FUE procedure. Robotic systems like ARTAS are an effort to attempt to address that need. One of the things the ISHRS FUE committee chaired by Dr. Parsa Mohebi is examining is the results comparison of the various FUE extraction methods. But as others have stated strip procedures yield more FUs for transplantation, but the number can be much higher than stated. All the Best, Michael

  18. Hi Everyone,

    Let me introduce myself since this is my first post on this forum. I am a 24 year old male from NJ and started losing my hair about 4 years ago but I'd say 40-50% of my loss happened with the past 6 months. I am getting married a year from now and I'm starting to panic that I might be bald for my wedding (which I would prefer not to be :)).

    I had a consultation last week with Bosley and scheduled an appointment for surgery next month with Dr. DiBiase for 2200 grafts (they recommended between 1600-2200 but I figured if I'm having the surgery I might as well get it all done). However, after doing some research on this forum I see that Bosley is not highly recommended. Therefore, I tried searching this forum and Google specifically for Dr. DiBiase but surprisingly not many results have come up. I would think a Doctor with 10 years experience and 6000+ hair transplants there would be a decent amount of reviews or stories but there aren't.

    Now I am hesitant to go through with the surgery with Bosley but I can't find any reputable doctors in NJ. I am fine with having the procedure done in NY but it is hard for me to get out to the city during the week since I work full-time. I contacted True & Dorin but was unable to get an appointment at a convenient time but I am thinking it would be worth it to get an appointment with them.

    My questions are:

    1. Has anyone heard of or had a procedure performed by Dr. DiBiase?

    2. What other doctors are around the NJ area?

    3. Should I go through with my surgery scheduled next month with Bosley, more specifically Dr. DiBiase?

    Thank you for reading my story and I appreciate any advice you may have!

    The three pictures below were taken during my consultation with Bosley last week and the other one was taken outside today.

    Hi Jocco,

    I understand your anxiousness. Don't make that push into a premature selection. HTN recommended surgeons are among the best in the world.Use the search function on this site. Also have you though about which type of surgery you are considering. Stirip Method or FUE? All the Best, Michael
