  1. This 41 y/o Chinese patient had thinness on the frontal and midscslp area, with a persistent frontal tuft. He did not want hair loss medications . One session FUT 2794 grafts was performed. Basically one session is good enough. This case illustrates that most Asian patients have thick hair caliber that make them an ideal candidate for hair transplant. Most of the time about 2500 to 2800 grafts are enough to cover the frontal and midscalp zone.
  2. This 53 y/o Taiwanese patient had baldness in the frontal and midscalp areas. He did not want any medications for the fear of possible side effects. One session FUT was done 18 months ago . A total of 2707 grafts which consisted of 633 single hairs were harvested.
  3. When the FUE punch is small in size, it leaves no scar on the chin. The healing is pretty good. We put the patient on Finasteride after the operation. Other factors that contribute to a much fuller look are the curly nature of his hair and the thick hair caliber. Basically he is an ideal candidate for hair transplant. Dr. Wen-Yi Wu

  5. This Chinese patient wanted one session, as many grafts as possible. He has an average donor scalp laxity and hair density . He also has some beard, which is not quite common for most Chinese patients. We performed Combination grafting which consisted of 3758 grafts FUT from the scalp and 500 grafts FUE from the beard. The post-operative picture was taken 15 months after. Spliting of the grafts from FUT: 450 1-hair grafts 2102 2-hair grafts 300 3-hair grafts 906 cut to size grafts to fit in 19# needle FUE Beard 500 grafts Total number of grafts transplanted 4258 grafts
  6. This patient was 30 y/o and suffered from severe hair loss. He had no idea what hair transplant could accomplish in his situations. But he was really expecting for a change. He had tried Finasteride before but stopped the medication for “ having not seen much improvement”. We treated the frontal zone and the midscalp in one session. Putting him back to Finasteride to prevent further hair loss. The one year post-operative differences are posted. Patient is extremely happy with the results.
  7. This 36 y/o Chinese patient received one session FUT of 3456 grafts. It consisted of 1376 grafts one hair follicle; 1790 grafts 2hair follicle and 290 grafts 3 hair follicle. He wanted only one session as much hair as possible covering from frontal area to the vertex. Chinese scalp are basically much tighter than Caucasian scalp and thus it is very difficult to harvest more than 4000 grafts in one session. He came back for follow up recently with his hair dyed and permed. This illustrated that wavy hair and less contrast in color between the hair and the scalp can produce a much fuller look. He still have a donor reserve of 2 to 3 thousand grafts if further strip harvesting is still needed. In the extreme situations when strip procedure is no longer possible, FUE can still be done for more grafts.
  8. Mr. Hung 36 y/o , Chinese male from Taiwan, presenting vertex baldness . He has been taking Finasteride for 2 years and according to him hair loss seemed to be stablized . He wants vertex transplant in one session. Donor strip: Length 26 cm , Width 1.3 cm ,Density 67 FU/ cm2. Grafts yield: 2 Hair follicle 1589, 1 Hair follicle cut to size to 1 mm 723, 3 Hair follicle 34 Recipient area 80 cm2
  9. Thanks for the compliments. I have just uploaded the immediate post-op picture of this patient. Will keep on posting more before and after pictures of other patients.
  10. Follicular unit transplantation ( FUT ) performed on a 32 y/o Chinese patient on Oct 25, 2009. - One session of 2798 grafts were done. - Norwood Class IV(a) patient - Donor density of 78 FU/cm2 at mid-occiput area, 66 FU/cm2 at the temporal parietal area. - Hair diameter of 76 microns, black color, straight hair - Was not on Finasteride before the transplant. Willing to start taking after the procedure. - Patient expectation is to have hair covering frontal zone and the mid scalp in one session. Treatment plan: Recipient area: - total of about 80 cm2 balding area to be transplanted; 50cm2 in the frontal zone and roughly 30 cm2 in the mid scalp - roughly 2000 grafts to the frontal zone and 800 grafts to the mid scalp -recipient site average density of about 25 to 40 grafts per cm2; 40 to 45 in the front and 25 to 35 in the mid scalp. - start transplanting from the existing frontal hair line which is about 7 cm from the glabella - combination of sagittal and coronal incisions with gauge 21 hypodermic needle for the single hair and custom made 1 mm blade for the 2-hair and 3- hair follicles -Dense packing in the frontal hair line with about 50 single hair /cm2. -Frontal tuft receive 40 to 45 grafts/cm2 and the rest of the frontal zone 40 grafts /cm2. -mid scalp receive about average 30 grafts/cm2 Donor area: -Total number of grafts harvested: 1103 single hair 1453 double hair 242 triple hair -Donor strip 28 cm X 1.6 cm was excised. -Donor wound closed in 2 layers. One layer with Nylon as retention suture and the other layer, superficial running suture with Vicryl Rapid -Trichophytic closure with trimming of the lower edge applied Remarks: - Asian scalps, in general, are tighter and have less hair density than Caucasian scalps; thus a larger strip needs to be excised. Asian hair, however, is thicker in caliber and, therefore, produces better coverage. - The majority of Asian patients have straight hair. - Because there is a strong color contrast in Asians between their black hair and pale skin, only the FUT procedure produces the most natural look. -Substantial amount of single hairs are used in the frontal hairline to produce naturalness. - - Average Asian follicles are 5-6 mm in length, whereas they are 4-5mm for Caucasians. There is higher risk of producing "transactions" when doing transplants on Asians. - Asians have a higher ratio of single hair follicles. The survival of single hair follicles are lower than the 2 or 3 hair follicles

  12. Patient Profile 2 This is a 27 y/o Chinese patient who received Follicular Unit Transplantation on March 31, 2009. -one session of 3520 grafts were done -General thinness on top of the scalp, see through appearance mimicking female hairloss Ludwig type II to III -Donor density of 82 FU/cm2 at the mid-occiput area, 70 FU/cm2 at the lateral sides. -Black color, straight hair , hair caliber 78 microns. -on Finasteride long time before, but stopped for 2 years prior to transplantation -Does not want Finasteride anymore for personal reasons -Patient expectation is to have hair covering top part of the scalp in one session. -Willing to shave the hair completely during the procedure. Treatment Plan: Recipient Area: -A total of about 110 cm2 to be transplanted. 50 cm2 in the frontal zone and about 60 cm2 in the midscalp -About 1700 grafts are placed on the front part ( 2 sides and the frontal core ) -the rest of the grafts are placed evenly in the frontal zone and the midscalp. -the new hairline is about 7.5 cm from the mid glabella -a combination of sagittal and coronal incisions with gauge 21 hypodermic needle for the single hair in the frontal hair line ; custom made 1 mm blade for the 2-hair and 3-hair follicles. -dense packing in the frontal hairline with about 50 single hair/cm2 -Frontal core (tuft) received 40 to 45 grafts/cm2 -the remaining grafts are placed evenly in the rest of the frontal zone and the midscalp -existing hair is shaved prior to the procedure to avoid injury of the existing hair and to expedite the creation of recipent sites and the graft insertions Donor area: -Total number of grafts ( 3520) harvested: 1189 single hair 2221 double hair 110 triple hair -Donor strip 31 x 1.5 cm was excised, average donor density 75 grafts/cm2 -Donor laxiety 20% as calculated by scalp elasticity scale. -Donor wound closed in 2 layers: one layer with Nylon as retention suture; and the other layer superficial running suture with Vicryl -trichophytic closure with trimming of the inferior edge applied. Remarks: -Typical of Asian patients, the hair caliber of this patient was thick, about 78 microns. We are expecting good coverage in one session. -Donor laxiety is only 20%, a wide strip is not recommended due to possible high tension with difficult closure and wide scar postoperatively . Instead a longer strip is advised. - Due to thick caliber of the hair, only Follicular Unit Transplantation is recommended to produce completely natural look. Mini-micro grafts or DFU procedures are not recommended. -Post-op Finasteride is still recommended because the patient is still young. The purpose of Finasteride is to prevent further hair loss. We did not emphasize regrowth since he had tried the medicine before and the results were not encouraging.
  13. Thank you very much for the compliments. I have always tried to do the best work I could do. Will try to upload more presentations in the future. If there are any English grammatical errors in my descriptions, I feel sorry about that. English is not my mother language. Good day! Dr. Wu
  14. Hi Rod, yes, I was trained in Bangkok with Dr. Pathomvanich in 2004. Since then, I started my private practise exclusively for hair transplantation from 2005 until now. Dr. Wu
