This 27-year-old patient was balding in a NW 3-3V thinning pattern. His hair was brown, straight and fine. His crown was thinning, but wasn’t a priority for him. His main concern was his receding hairline. He wanted to look younger and to wear a more current hairstyle.

We focused on transplanting the front from a mature hairline that allowed for future hair loss and ageing. We transplanted 2595 FUG’s and Dr. Simmons performed a routine 2-layer trichophytic closure.

He has continued to take Propecia since his surgery, but accepts that he may require further hair transplantation if his hair loss progresses.

These photos were taken 13 months post-op. He is extremely happy.

Although we never promise that a patient can cut their hair shorter than ? to ? inches long, he was able to shave his hair to a number 2 clipper without his donor scar showing.

Hi Hairsearcher.

Try not to be too concerned about your donor numbness. As Thehairupthere and Aaron1234 have posted.... the numbness is normal and usually temporary. It may take a few weeks - sometimes a few months before full feeling is restored.

At 3 days post-op the swelling that you are experiencing is also normal. Post-op swelling usually peaks on the 3rd-4th day and then begins to subside. You may notice more swelling tomorrow - but there is good news - the swelling will start to go down shortly and you will look and feel more like yourself soon.

It is certainly possible for an African American to receive an eyebrow hair transplant.

African American hair is curly below the surface of the skin as well as above. It is essential to make sure the the curl goes toward your face. Even then you would need to keep your eyebrows trimmed short, as Thehairupthere said.

This 57 year old gentleman had experienced gradual hair loss over the last 10 years. He had a NW 3V thinning pattern with salt-and-pepper coloured hair which was wavy and average in diameter.

Dr. Simmons transplanted 3167 FUG’s to his frontal area in one session. His hairline was recreated to blend with his existing hair and not to overpower his thinning temporal hairlines. Dr. Simmons performed a routine trichophytic 2-layer closure and it was difficult to find his donor scar.

These photos were taken 12 months post-op. He is very happy with his new hairline and increased density up front. He is contemplating returning to transplant his temporal hairlines to make an even better frame for his face.

Try not to worry too much. As David mentioned above, you shouldn't have used your nails (that's a no no!!). At 12 days post-op you likely didn't do much harm (especially since you didn't see any blood) - losing a hair wouldn't have made a huge impact on the final result.

Shedding of the transplanted hairs is normal and part of the process. You will see your new hairs sprouting soon!

This 35 year old gentleman had a NW 3V pattern with a thinning hairline and a balding crown. He had black, curly, dry, average-coarse donor hair. His preference was to lower his hairline and reduce his balding crown in one session.

We transplanted 3129 FUG’s in one session – 1500 FUG’s to his frontal hairline and the remaining 1629 FUG’s to his anterior crown. By transplanting the areas as we did, he should be able to transplant his midscalp and the rest of his front in one more session, if and when he loses the hair between the transplanted areas. If we had transplanted his hairline and the baldest part of his crown, he would have needed 2 more transplants to join them up.

These photos were taken 1 year post-op. He has a smaller balding area in his crown that he can partially conceal with styling and is happy with his new hairline.

At your first haircut you may want to ask your hair stylist to look at the donor scar before cutting your hair just to ensure that they do not cut it too short.

Patient's donor scar may be pink for 6 months post-op and a few patients may get some shedding above or below the incision in the first few months. If your hair is cut too short it may be difficult to hide the donor scar while it is healing and all you can do at that point is wait until it grows in again.

It is true. Just as Joeid0000 posted above. Sometimes the transplanted hairs remain after the crusts have shed and grow a little before shedding . Occasionally, the transplanted hairs remain and continue to grow without shedding.

Most often, the transplanted hairs shed with the crusts or shortly after the crusts have shed and then begin to sprout 3-4 months after the transplant.

You may be one of the lucky ones - but don't be disappointed if you soon notice that your newly transplanted hairs are beginning to shed.

You will be excited to see the new sprouts growing in 3-4 months.

Post-op itching isn't common but a few patients do feel itchy. More often, patients feel numb for 6 to 8 weeks. If patients are itchy using a saline spray may help.

Patients can also use non-sedating antihistamines like Claritin, Aerius, Allegra, or Reactine during the day. If itch is making it hard to sleep, sedating antihistamines like Benadryl can help.

The grafts are most susceptible to trauma during the first 3-4 days. You should be careful not to scratch the recipient area. Scratching with your fingernails can dislodge the grafts.

We ask our patients to sleep with their head elevated for 3 nights...but check with your clinic just to be sure.

This 32 year-old man came in for his 1 year follow up and was happy to allow us to use this video to share his results.

He first noticed his hair loss 7 years prior to his hair transplant surgery. He began using Finasteride just prior to his consultation with Dr Simmons.

He had a NW5 thinning pattern with a thinning forelock. His hair was average in diameter, brown and straight. 3477 FUG’s were transplanted to his frontal area and through his forelock. His hairline was transplanted with single haired grafts in an irregular pattern and the density was slowly reduced as we approached his mid-scalp.

He continues to use Finasteride and has plenty of donor hair available to transplant his midscalp/crown later if he wished.

Just as all the others mentioned.... it really is too early. There won't be much new hair in the first 3 - 4 months. You should start to notice some of the hairs beginning to sprout soon. Then your hair should grow about 1/2 inch or 1 cm per month.

6 - 8 months post-op you should see a definite improvement but it may take up to a year to see the full effect.

Dr Simmons has similar concerns as to what Dr Lindsey has stated above.

It may help to know that just prior to the removal of the donor hair, the hair is trimmed above and below the incision to make it easier to keep the hair away from the sutures. Life is easiest if the donor hair is 2 inches long. Even 1/2 inch long hair can hide the sutures if Dr. Simmons trims as little hair as possible.

A patient's donor scar may be pink for 6 months post-op. A few patients may get some shedding above or below the incision in the first few months. For these reasons we ask patients to grow their hair 1 inch long by their surgery day - post-op to ask their hair stylist to look at the donor scar before cutting your hair too short.
