  1. This 51 y/o male came to us in May of 2012 for his first transplant procedure of 1669 grafts (1229 FU's and 440 DFU's) for a total of 4671 hairs. He returned in May of 2015 for his second procedure, at which time we placed 1870 grafts (1540 FU and 330 DFU).

He had a 3rd procedure of 1600 FU's performed the other day, at which time these "after" photos were taken.

  2. This 22 y/o female had a single eyebrow restoration procedure performed approximately one year ago and returned recently for evaluation, at which time the "after" photos were taken.

We use exclusively 1-hair grafts, and leave the length of the donor hair around one-half inch, so that we can visualize the natural curve of the hair and also so that we can "preview" for the patient at the end of the procedure what it will look like when the hair grows out. Everyone has a slight curl to the hair, even those that we would assume have all straight hair. Owing to the fact that we want our grafts to have these longer hairs on them, a strip harvest has to be used rather than FUE. With FUE it is necessary to cut the hair down to 1mm in length, which gives you no idea as to the direction the hair will be heading once it grows out. Since there are usually a minority of the natural follicular bundles consisting of one hair only, it is necessary to very carefully cut some of the 2-hair FU's into two separate 1-hair micrografts. We use a very small 22 gauge needle to make most of our recipient sites. The whole procedure takes around 4-5 hours. The reason for this length of time is because, for each graft we place, we take care to rotate it until it "flows" in direction with the curve of the eyebrow itself and also to make sure it "hugs" the contour and shape of the face in that area. In other words, we don't want any of the grafts to curve upward above the upper border of the eyebrow or to curve away from the face.

We have been doing eyebrows now for 23 years and have always enjoyed the challenges of performing these demanding operations. It is very rewarding to have the patients return with a big smile and happy with the big change this makes in their appearance.

  3. This 62 year old gentleman had his first hair transplant procedure in December of 2015, and a subsequent one in November of 2016. He recently returned for a third final procedure, in which we filled in the rear half more fully. He had wonderful donor density, having 120 FU's per cm2. In total he received 3195 FU grafts, 831 MFU grafts, and 9256 hairs overall. He is an advanced Norwood VI, bordering on a Class VII.

  4. This 57 year old male had his first hair transplant one year ago. He had diffuse thinning all over the top of his head, with moderate balding of the frontal region and hairline. He received 2174 grafts with "combination" grafting (FUT) using mostly FU grafts and also DFU grafts centrally. The number of hairs/follicles was 5271. 160 FU's were placed in each side temple region (sideburn area). 620 FU's were placed in the front hairline. 451 DFU grafts averaging 5 hairs apiece were placed in the large central area. 150 FU's were placed in each "crease" area to the side of the DFU's, and, finally, 600 FU's were placed in the crown/vertex in back. He is ecstatic with the results of only one session and doesn't even feel he needs a second session at this time.

  5. This 49 year old male with an advanced Norwood VI pattern of almost complete baldness had two sessions by us totaling 3356 grafts, which were made up of 2655 FU's and 701 MFU grafts. A total of 8410 hairs were moved. His FU's were 30% 1-hair per; 50% 2-hairs per; 20% 3-hairs per. He just recently had a final "fill in" session, which should be the last one he will need for the rest of his life.

  6. This 26 y/o male first came to our clinic in 2011 and had a total of three sessions, including ones also in 2012 and 2014, and received a total of 3536 grafts (2913 FU's and 623 MFU grafts). He received a total of 8707 hairs in the three sessions, the latter two being quite small per his request. He is scheduled for a final session and came in for a consultation visit a week ago, at which time the attached photos were taken.

  7. I have been remiss in not previously having introduced Dr. Slaughter to the general hair transplant community. He has been working closely with me over the past 10 months in hair transplantation and has done a large number of surgeries by himself. He is a fully trained facial plastic surgeon, who toward the end of his fellowship (which he finished last June) made a few visits to our office to observe some transplants. He is a fulltime member of the Williams Plastic Surgery group in Latham, New York (near Albany) and will be emphasizing hair transplantation as his main sub-specialty area of practice. Our clinic and the Williams surgery clinic will be merging in July of this year, but the hair transplant part of the practice will continue to be located in the Saratoga office we have used for the past 23 years.

Dr. Slaughter obtained his B.S. degree from the University of Georgia and attended medical school at Morehouse School of Medicine. He then completed two years of general and vascular surgery at the prestigious surgery program at Duke University. He then completed a residency in head and neck surgery at the University of North Carolina. During this time he developed a strong interest in plastic surgery of the head and face, and then completed a facial plastic fellowship under Dr. Edwin Williams. He has authored several articles and publications in major journals and received numerous awards throughout his training. His surgical abilities are first-rate and he has quickly been learning all of the nuances of hair transplant surgery, which make the difference in obtaining excellent results. He hopes to conduct research in our practice, as I have been doing the past 20 years. He has wonderful rapport with our patients, who have taken to his out-going personality and trust him to do their surgery.

This coming week, Dr. Slaughter and myself will be attending the outstanding Orlando Live Surgery Workshop, which is put on by the ISHRS. Doctors from all over the world attend.

One last thing: I will not be retiring, but just cutting back a little this July. I enjoy performing hair transplant surgery as much as ever, and hope to keep my hand in it as long as I can. But I welcome the energy and new ideas that Dr. Slaughter brings to our practice. The really neat thing about hair surgery is that every patient presents a unique and different challenge. It is so important not to "cookie-cutter" all of the patients into one way of doing everything. In a few months, when we have some representative photos of Dr. Slaughter's surgical results, we will submit them to this community and hopefully Dr. Slaughter will join the ranks of the "recommended" docs listed here. I have been proud to have been a part of this community all these years.

  8. This 25 y/o male received 1884 FU grafts from us in two sessions - 1191 in first session and a touch-up session of 693 FU's at the second one. On the day of these photos he had a final session of 1076 FU's for additional density. I thought he was fine as he was, but the final results are always in the eyes of the patient. His FU's were comprised of 20% 1-hair grafts, 50% 2-hair grafts, and 30% 3-hair grafts. I apologize for the excessive lighting on the initial photos.

  9. This 26 year old male came for his first hair transplant procedure in January of 2016. He received 1768 grafts in a "combination" type session which utilizes mostly FU grafts (1-3 hairs each) for most of the scalp, but uses DFU's (double FU grafts of 4-6 hairs each) in a small front central "core" area for increased density and blocking of light hitting the scalp. He had his second transplant on the day of the photos, which we hope will be his final session.

  10. This 41 y/o male had his first of two transplant procedures with us, 1498 grafts, on January of 2015, and then had a second similar-sized session of 1194 grafts one year later in January of 2016. He returned this week to show me his results thus far. He may or may not have one more session. Overall, we placed 2692 grafts, made up of 2222 FU's and 420 MFU's (4-6 hair grafts, placed centrally for density). He received 5327 hairs in all. His donor density was very poor and 50% of his FU grafts were 1-hair and the other half were 2-hair ones. He had virtually no 3-hair grafts.

The chief goal with a frontal forelock, this being what I call my "shield" pattern forelock, is to frame the face, and I feel we accomplished this for this very bald patient, using less than ideal donor hair.

The reason for using a forelock is always for the purpose of accomplishing a lot with very little, at least visually as the patient is viewed from the front and the front-side angles. The rear vertex region is always somewhat neglected, for the very reason that there isn't enough donor hair to do anything there. One extreme approach for a patient this bald is to scatter FU grafts with equal light density over the entire balding area. I would submit that most of the time that will look like nothing was done. It's a total "see-through." With a forelock approach, gradients of density are created to frame the face in the front-central aspect of the scalp, with gradually fading densities going away from it toward the sides and rear.

  11. This 49 y/o man had his first hair transplant surgery in June of 2014. A total of 1594 grafts were placed, using a "combination" approach with 1144 FU grafts and 450 DFU (double FU grafts/ 4-5 hairs each) grafts in front-central area for extra density. He had very fine hair. He recently had a second session of similar size for the purpose of increasing his density. He was quite pleased with the change in his appearance from the first session.

  12. This 34 male 14 months ago had a dense-packing procedure of 2045 FU's in the two side temple areas and in the 1 1/2 inches in front of his rising hairline. His FU distribution was 10% 1-hair FU's, 50% 2-hair FU's; and 40% 3-hair FU's. His "after" photos were taken 14 months after the surgery. I did note, on examining him, that he cut his side temple hairs a little too short. They would look a lot fuller if he just left a little more length so there was some overlap. He promised to do this in the future. The one operative photo was taken immediately after the grafts were placed. He returned for a shampoo and cleaning the next AM.

  13. This 65 y/o male presented for his first hair transplant procedure one year ago and now comes back for a consultation visit, at which the attached "after" photos were taken. He received a total of 1941 grafts, with 490 being MFU grafts of 4-6 hairs each in the central regions, and 1451 FU grafts (1-3 hairs each) in all the other areas. 630 FU's were placed along the front hairline, 150 down each "crease" region, and 500 FU's in the rear crown/vertex region for "light coverage" back there. He plans to have another similar sized session in the next few months. His FU grafts were comprised of 1-hair FU's (20%), 2-hair FU's (50%), and 3-hair FU's (30%). He is pleased with the density and naturalness of his results thus far and knows it will only get better with another session.

  14. This patient first came to us in 2005 and has had three procedures in all, with the latest in 2014. He came by for a visit the other day and the "after" photos displayed here were taken then. He is blessed with coarse hair, which "fills" nicely and gives great density. In total he received 5061 grafts, consisting of 235 DFU grafts and 4826 FU's, for a total of 11,169 hairs. He was 39 when he first came to us and is now 51.

  15. This then 51 y/o male had been bald for many years and went through a nearly one hour routine every morning, meticulously arranging his side and back hair and bringing it over the top to re-create the look of a man with a full head of hair. The second photo in the series shown shows the look he achieved by doing this. He first came to us in 2000 and over those years has had four medium-sized HT sessions totaling 5968 grafts, of which 4955 were FU grafts and 1013 were DFU grafts of 4-5 hairs. In all he received 14,327 hairs. The "after" photos were taken recently when he was up visiting relatives from the southern United States where he lives. He is very happy with his result now at the age of 67.

  16. This 66 year old female presented two years ago because the frontal region of her scalp had been becoming progressively thinner over the past ten years. We placed 1655 grafts (3803 hairs) consisting of 430 "slit MFU grafts" in the central regions (4-5 hairs each) and 1225 FU grafts all around them. She is scheduled in two weeks for a second session, which should finish her up and give her decent hair density there.

  17. This 51 y/o female with long history of female pattern hairloss throughout the top of her scalp presented for hair transplantation in 2015. The "after" photos shown here were taken one year after her first session. She plans to come for a second session for further density. She received 1375 FU grafts along with 200 slit-MFU grafts (4-5 hairs each). These larger grafts were placed within the "frontal core" just behind the mid-hairline. In analyzing her FU grafts, they were 40% 1-hair; 50% 2-hairs; and 10% 3-hairs.

  18. Yes, it has been 11 years since his last session, but occasionally I like to show an example of someone who has had a decade or so go by, to show that things hold up pretty well using a "combination" approach with FU's and DFU/TFU's. If my approach was totally different now, I wouldn't do that, but my general philosophy has been the same for a lot of years. The biggest differences are the following: Many more FU's in the front hairline zone than 10 years ago (average of 600 versus 250-300 back then; If someone has had 3 sessions and wants more hair, I will go to FUE in the higher and lower regions to get the hair sometimes. And we use custom-made lateral slit blades for our FU sites rather than solid-core needles.

  19. This gentleman presented to our clinic first in 2004 for a consultation, desiring that his marked recessions and temple area be filled in. Three was also a strong family history of baldness and he felt the entire top area was thinning.

We performed two surgeries, one in 2004 and a second one in 2005. In total he received 2568 grafts, comprised of 1811 FU grafts and 757 DFU grafts, for a total of 7487 hairs. He recently came back for a "fill-in" session of 1658 FU grafts.
