  1. Are you taking finasteride (propecia) yet? I started taking it at 23 and am now 41. Saved my hair

Yes I have been taking 1mg Finasteride everyday for 11 months. I believe it has absolutely slowed down my hair loss if not stopped it completely. My only regret is not starting it the day i turned 18. I might not be in this position I am in right now.

  2. Ok guys here we go. Been doing a considerable amount of research on hair restoration for about 1 year (probably too much research for someone my age). This is my situation....

22 year old male strongly considering a hair transplantation (I know my age is a major turn off for people but please hear me out). Always had a naturally high hairline and even began losing some hair at the age of 17. I always kind of shrugged it off as I was able to style my hair to cover it up pretty good. It wasn't until around my 21st birthday when things started to get bad. It's almost as if one day I looked at my head and said "where did all my hair go?" It hit me like a ton of bricks. I wont get too far into my feelings as we all know the devastation that hair loss can bring.

I began using Rogaine foam at about age 18 in hopes that it would stop the progression of my hair loss, don't think it's helped much but it doesn't hurt either, I still use it to this day. I have been on 1mg Finasteride for 11 months now and I believe this has helped me immensely, I also use Nizoral shampoo once daily. I have taken the "Big 3" approach to fight my hair loss. My only regret in fighting against MPB is not getting on Finasteride the day I turned 18 years old as I think this has been the most effective drug for me.

Anyways, here is where I am looking for some feedback from the community. My brother, who is 6 years older than me and has a nearly identical hair loss pattern to me, has stopped losing hair. Here is where I see some hope. He has had the same hairline since he was about 23 (turning 29 very soon,) but has NEVER used meds, and has the same amount of hair loss then, as he does now. That's almost 6 years of no hair loss using no medication. It seems his hair loss progression has almost naturally stopped. This is where is see the light at the end of the tunnel for myself. Is it possible that using the "Big 3" and comparing my future hair loss to my brother that I have completely stopped my hair loss. I used to see 40-50 hairs in my hand in the shower every time, now i see maybe 5. I used to see a lot of hair on my pillow in the morning, now I see much less. I truly believe I have significantly slowed down if not completely stopped my hair loss using the Big Three.

Here is where I believe I am candidate for an HT.

    - slowed down if not stopped progression of hair loss

    - extremely thick donor

    - don't want to lower the hairline (maybe a few hundred grafts in crown)

    - I believe I have have reasonable expectations, meaning --> I know I will never have the hair I truly desire, I know I will not have Brad Pitt's hairline

    - willing to get more than 1 surgery in the future

    - willing to go somewhat conservative

    - willing to pay a lot of $$ and travel for top doctor

    - willing to continue with Finasteride post surgery (I would even like to try something stronger I have seen zero side effects)

Here is my best case scenario in my mind. I get a great HT that I am happy with. This first hair transplant keeps me happy for 6 - 8 years while continuing with medication. By the year 2022 or 2023, science has given us great methods for fighting back against hair loss and no more surgeries required.

    - Is my best case scenario that unreasonable or am I just being too optimistic??

    I will attach pictures below.

I am strongly considering getting a hair transplant. I have narrowed down my search to a handful of doctors. Please I would love to hear feed back from anyone and everyone!!!(especially Spex).

Thanks so much guys, we are in this together.

  3. I could not agree more. MPB is a lifelong progression and never stops although we can enjoy long periods of efficiency with effective hair loss meds like low dose finasteride. I started taking it in summer of 1996 and it is still working efficiently for me.

My grandfather was a true Norwood 6 and I had reached class 5 by the age of 40 having worn a full hair system for 11 years. Most of my frontal third was gone by then and I concentrated my first three surgeries mostly in that zone transcending into the mid-scalp. Out of nearly 7,000 grafts total, roughly 700 went into my crown which is still thin but not bald.

It's my crown where finasteride has helped me the most otherwise if I were not still taking it, it would look much worse.

MagikHair, do you have more of a recessionary pattern of loss or do you have a diffused thinning pattern of loss?

I have uploaded some pics to my profile, feel free to take a look. Should I base my hair loss progression from my mom or dads side of the family. I feel like making somewhat reliable predictions could be useful in the way I handle hair loss.

  4. Im 23 yr/o male and have been dealing with have been dealing with hair loss for years now.

Highly considering getting a transplant done within the next year. A big concern for me though, being so young, is that my hair loss is most likely not complete and still have many years of loss ahead of me. Judging off family history I'm probably in this for the long haul. Knowing that my natural progression of hair loss is not complete, the thought of getting a hair transplant makes me nervous. What are the chances that I continue to lose the native hair after a HT? I would not be opposed to getting a second hair transplant down the road if my first one can buy me 6 or 7 years of time without having to worry about it.

Also I have consistently been using the "Big 3" for about a year now. How/when do I know if I have stopped or at least slowed down the natural progression of hair loss? Is it rare for the Big 3 to completely stop one's hair loss? Because i feel that if I get to the point where I know I had stopped my hair loss with the Big 3, I would be 10x more confident about pulling the trigger and getting an HT. I guess it's just the degree of uncertainty of my native hair falling out after an HT and feeling like the HT was a waste of time and money.

Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated.

  5. In my opinion rogaine foam is junk, it does not absorb as well as the liquid, I switched to lipogaine and it made a huge difference, might want to consider giving the liquid a shot,

Yes filling in the recession and temple giving you a straight hairline is not a good use of your grafts, I'd say keep a Norwood II hairline, conservative is the way to go, less is more in your case, about the FUE you'll hear different opinions, I've had only FUE and plan to only have FUE, however the procedure itself has less margin for error you'll need to go to a qualified FUE surgeon who performs the procedure daily, do not go to a strip surgeon who does FUE in strip scars and occasionally does FUE, you'll get poor growth, the general consensus is strip out then FUE, however you still have a lot of hair so I think FUE would be appropriate just for a conservative hairline procedure, your best weapon at this point is maintaining all that hair, once you get bald like me, you'll have to get crafty with the hairstyle and the density will never be as good as before balding. Good luck dude feel free to ask any questions regarding the procedure.

May i ask why you plan on only doing FUE?

Also which doctor did your FUE procedure?

  6. I reviewed your photos and your hairloss is fairly extensive for your age, it does look like you have some thinning in the crown and through out your scalp, how long have you been on finasteride and minoxidil? You want to make sure your hairloss is stable enough to withstand surgical trauma, you don't want to deal with shock loss, if you've been on fin and minoxidil for at least 12 months, then it would be a good start to begin researching, you wear your hair long, so I don't see a nenes to choosing FUE in your case, I would keep your hairline though, do not lower it, you will more than likely be a Norwood 5-6 eventually, you want to make sure you have enough grafts to address your midscalp with appropriate density, being conservative is the way to go at 23, being too aggressive could result in a bad situation down the line. I know how you feel I went bald at 29 and yes being bald in your 20's is really bad especially beside it ages you a lot more than your actual age, but you have to be smart about how you approach an ever expanding balding area with an ever diminishing donor area.

I been using rogaine foam almost everyday for 4 years. Still use it to try and keep and hair left. Using fin for 9 months now and haven't noticed any progress.

When you say don't lower the hairline, do you mean don't fill in the temple/receding hairline areas?

I just want it to look dense in the hairline overall not to bring it lower on my forehead.

  7. 23 is pretty young. Are you taking any meds? Most doctors will suggest to start there.

Where are you based? Would suggest a few consults to get a handle on your degree of loss and appropriate next steps.

Yes i take finesteride daily, use rogain twice a day, and Nizoral Shampoo. Still havent seen any improvement in my hair.

    I'm in the Philadelphia area.

  8. To me these seem to be the biggest questions when it comes to HT. I'm new here and I don't even know where to start. I've looked through threads and all the information just made things even more confusing.

How do I choose a surgeon?

How do I know which procedure is best for me?

Also is 23 too young for a hair transplant?

  9. Wow Rahal's work looks fantastic. What I'm getting from you is that FUT may be the more safer, better, and cost effective choice.

I see Rahal is an expert with hairlines (which is important to me), to you know if he can pull of that famous "Rahal Harline" with and FUE procedure or is he more limited to FUT in that respect?

I will look into getting pictures for the site. Do you know if you can upload them via iPhone. Also how do i access my private messages on this site?

  10. Well congrats on taking the first step. It's not easy-but we're all here for the same reason.

For starters, try and take everything with a grain of salt-most of us here are speaking from our own experiences and opinions will vary on a variety of topics including best surgeon and which procedure is best given the patient context.

For instance, being from NY I was adamant about finding a NY surgeon. After research, I decided the best option for me was a short flight away. I was also pretty fearful of a long scar, but became more comfortable with the idea over time and moved in that direction. Do your best to keep an open mind.

I would consult with as many doctors as possible before reaching any conclusions. You'll be thankful you did.

Do consult with Dr. Wesley, he's a great guy. Dr. Feller is also a fine choice but only for FUT. Other names you owe it to yourself to consult with out of the area but well worth your time- Hasson and Wong, Konior, Cooley, Shapiro, Rahal, Gabel.

In general, FUE is much more expensive in the states and only a few names on that list above should garner your attention. The European docs like Lorenzo, Feriduni, Bisanga, Ergodan are a good place to begin. There's other great names too I'm forgetting.

That list might overwhelm, but take your time with it. Happy to help you narrow it down further once we see some pics and better understand your goals.

Thank you for your concern as well as your detailed response. This absolutely helps.

I do believe Hassan and Wong would be my top choice if money and distance were not an issue. Do you know if FUE is less expensive in Canada?

Also I have heard Dr. Feller is a great surgeon with FUE (one of the best). Maybe I was misinformed?

The reason FUE is so appealing to me is because of no linear scarring and also the ability to wear a short hair cut, which I do desire.

  11. Sorry I confused you with another poster. If you want to see Dr. Wesley results though just run a search and previous patients will come up.

Who else are you considering? What size case? Are you open to travel? How did you decide on FUE? Maybe post some pics if you can.

I am also considering Dr. Feller of New York. I believe I'm a Norwood 2 but not positive. Im open to travel really anywhere on the East Coast. I decided FUE because a visible linear scar makes me nervous. Ill try to post some pics, I am new on this website and not 100% sure how everything works.
