Thank you for coming back on dds. I'm sorry to hear about the poor density. This is the second result I have seen from Dr Bhatti where the FUEs didn't seem to grow? Have you been able to talk to him about this and ask why? I'm looking into FUE myself and all this info is really helpful. The good and the bad. I really hope you are able to meet your goals with another surgery. I hope you will let us know if Dr Bhatti explains why he thinks the growht was not as good.
Yes. I have been in touch with Dr Bhatti. He says due to not enough grafts he had to focus on the frontal scalp. But even there the density is not cosmetic enough.
So, I guess I am one of the unlucky patients ...

Yes. I am planning to go again for my 2nd HT in the next 6 months.
Hopefully 3000 grafts (scalp and BHT) would help get me reasonable coverage
at the remaining areas.
-
I guess that's all the growth I can expect as I am at the 11th month already.
Though I wouldn't call this a great success, it looks better than where I was before.
I would like to cover my crown (2nd picture) with 2000 to 3000 grafts to get
reasonable coverage.picture 3 was taken in natural light.
To achieve better cosmetic result, I probably need to depend
on concealers like Toppik (till we find a miracle cure for MPB!)

I had my HT in Sep 2014. But even now, when taking shower on the transplanted area,
it feels very itchy. Similarly when I comb the transplanted hair, it feels itchy too.
During other times, it's fine and there's no itchy feeling.
Is this normal?

HTsoon,
Agreed. Patients will always get more "bang for their buck" with scalp grafts. BHT tends to yield much lower growth rates and retains its native characteristics -- IE: beard hair grows like beards hair in the scalp, chest hair like chest hair, et cetera. It also leaves scarring in the extracted regions, but that's another discussion altogether.
I don't advocate for purposeful donor thinning either, but it's generally advised to use up everything you have on the scalp -- safely -- before considering other potential donor sources. It would also likely be better to cover up in the donor region opposed to implanting these grafts into the recipient scalp too (as you said previously).
I was told that BHT grafts have same characteristics as that of the recipient areas.
Is this not true?

In my opinion the patient would have insisted on having the procedure carried out even though the coverage area was quite large and the doner area was poor. Dr Bhatti would have explained this in his initial consultation.
A strategy would have been put together in order for the patient to appear not bald, and appear to have a mature hairline and style to suit his 53 years of age.
If you look at the first picture of the last set then it is very difficult to argue that this has not been achieved.
Personally if I could go from where the patient started to the photo in the previous set in 9 months I would not be best pleased if a surgeon would have turned me down.
dds, you have come a long way in a short time and the results will hopefully improve even further. Judging from your before and after photos there is a huge difference, I hope you feel the same way, enjoy!

Thanks for the kind words.
Do you think I can expect any new growth even after 10 months?
I am sure the existing transplanted hair would continue to grow like my other natural hair.
-
as I posted before I really think you should never have been operated on in the first instance, too much baldness and not enough donor im afraid to give you an acceptable look, how do you feel so far? are you happy?
I am happy with the result in the frontal scalp area - a huge transformation compared to where I was before.
However in the mid scalp region, I had no/very less growth of the transplanted area.
I am checking with my doctor to see if the next HT can increase the density of my mid scalp and have some density on my crown. The challenge is the availability of donor area for which we are planning to use my chest hair, which is available in plenty.
On the whole I would say I am satisfied with the results.

I bumped into an advt that claims they have found a cure for male pattern
baldness by identifying a gene that blocks DHT.
They claim full regrowth in less than 120 days.
Has anyone tried this?
-
You mean the next one? We are planning to do BHT (chest hair) since the scalp hair is limited.
-
Yes. I am planning for a 3rd HT later this year for around 2000 or so (based on Dr Bhatti's estimate) - 1000 from scalp and 1000 from chest
-
-
I don't think you can expect new hair at this stage. The existing grafts would probably thicken for another 4 months
-
Thanks for the info

Hi dds,
Chest donor area also heals up pretty fast as does the bear donor area. Attaching a picture of the chest donor area, shortly post-op and also a picture of the beard donor area about 3 months post-op. This is from a 300 graft beard donor extraction. As you can see, there are no scars. Patients usually are able to shave 2 weeks after the procedure without any issues.
Best regards,
California
Do you know how many grafts were harvested from the chest donor area?
-
Here is an example of an extensive us of Body Hair to compensate for the lack of scalp donor.
This 29 year old patient is another case which exemplifies the good results after a body hair procedure. With a bare donor area, Dr. Bhatti could harvest only 976 grafts from the scalp and the remaining grafts from the body (beard, chest). Total grafts transplanted: 3187.
Results are after 18 months. You can see the beard donor area follow up picture after 18 months. There is absolutely no scarring.
In regards to the "pain" issue, graft extractions from the beard area would definitely be more painful than the scalp extractions just because an anesthesia shot on the scalp stings less than the same shot on the chin. Depends upon the pain tolerance of each individual......but it really is not too bad.
Best regards,
California
Thanks for the pictures. Look great.
How about hair extraction from the chest? Would it heal slower than scalp?
I would like to avoid going for beard extraction as I don't want to have scars on my face, in case something goes wrong.

I would like to hear from those who had BHT (Body Hair Transplant) as I have the following questions
a. Since the texture of BHT (specifically chest hari) is very different from the hair on the scalp, how would this blend with already existing hair on the scalp?
b. Does BHT on the receipent site grow slower than regular (hair from the scalp) transplant?
c. Is the BHT extraction more painful than extraction from the scalp?
d. Does the donor site (for BHT) heal slowly compared to the donor site from scalp?
e. Since body hair is generally thicker than scalp hair, do we need lesser grafts compared to the grafts from the scalp?
-
-
Dr Bhatti estimated around 3000 grafts to get reasonable coverage. So I guess 1500 from scalp and 1500 from BHT
-
Thanks, David for the detailed response.
Yes, due to limited donor supply, Dr Bhatti suggested to focus on front and mid scalp.
For the next surgery to cover the rest of the mid scalp and the crown, can you please
let me know approx how many grafts do I need? I guess I have to go for BHT since I
have only about 1500 grafts of donor area left on my scalp
-
Thanks. It's 7.5 months (not 6.5 months)
-
Attached are my 7.5 month post opp pictures taken both in natural lighting and
artificial lighting.
Though there's a good progress, I am concerned about the low density, especially in direct lighting.
I think about 60% of grafts have grown so far. Is there a possibility of the remaining grafts to grow or have they all died?
How many grafts do you estimate I would need for my back and crown?
-
The FUT was performed some 15 years back when the procedure was relatively new.
It was for 1500 grafts and he tried to spread this over the entire bald area.
Most of the grafts did grow but density was extremely low (refer to pre op pictures).

Combination of both. I believe only about 75% of transplanted hairs grew, that's why the density is low. May be for the next surgery I should go for about 3000 grafts and hope to get little bit more coverage.
