There is a forum on the Open Hair Loss Topics asking about any examples of facial hair restoration (beards, sideburns, ect) so I thought I'd bring this one back to the top.

I saw a doctor post before and afters of a beard transplant last week. I don't remember the doc, but I'll try and find it.

From what I've seen doctors can work with where your hair is at in length. They'll cut it if it's too long and they prefer it short.

I wouldn't shave it to your scalp, grow it a little if you have. Best bet is to just call and ask your doc. He'll have the best answer for you and for what he prefers.
