Regular Member j1000 Posted July 21 Regular Member Share Posted July 21 Just popping in to see if anyone knows if armpit hair could ever be used for a hair transplant if desired / needed. I have a decent amount of scalp donor hair left. I have a LOT of chest hair and a good amount of back hair too if that matters. But I was thinking to myself that my armpit hair is quite long (2.5 inches at least and not curly like some folks). I just always wondered if a doctor could get a few hundred grafts from each side. Cheers!
Senior Member HappyMan2021 Posted July 21 Senior Member Share Posted July 21 I have no formal answer for you, but I don't see why not. If public hair (yes, public hair), chest hair, and beard hair can successfully be transplanted, I don't see why armpit hair can't. That being said, if armpit hair was a viable option, it certainly would have been mentioned alot on the forum by now, but it hasn't been. I am not sure why though. Do keep in mind that armpit hair will still look and feel exactly like armpit hair on your scalp. I also have no clue what armpit hair lifecycle is compared to scalp hair. I am guessing here, but I am just assuming that armpit hair quality, texture, and lifecycle are such that the chest, beard, and even the pubic region all make better candidates. Thanks for that write-up. I’ve heard of so many kinds of body hair being used but those pits never get any love lol. You bring up some great points. I’ll ask some doctors. Mine is long and although my scalp hair is someway wavy, I think a few hundred armpit grafts would blend in fine or could be used to fill in my FUE scar from my first transplant at least. I do feel there has to be some valid reason armpit hair is not discussed. If anything, I feel like men would much rather have armpit hair taken away than beard or chest hair. For what it's worth, I never hear about arm or leg hair being used either.

I know both arm and leg hair have been used in a few cases, but it doesn't have great growth rates and it grows short and fine, so it's not ideal to use unless you needed fine hairs to make the hairline more natural or something like that. I am considering trying arm hair on my next surgery. I did try using back hair a few years ago, but very few grafts were not coming out intact, so we decided to stop. It's possible I may try that again at some point trying different punches to see if any work better that the last time. Regular Member laverita Posted July 22 Regular Member Share Posted July 22 It can be used and some have even had a strip from it. Remember this and pubic hair is deemed wet hair due to presence of sweat glands open in the follicle. Back hair has a strong attachment so are prone to breaking if not done correctly...something to remember.

Do you have any links? 😂
Regular Member laverita Posted July 24 Regular Member Share Posted July 24 Well looking at laxity of the skin it was also more the norm back in the day. I know the doctor who performed it and told me about it also way back near 2 decades ago. I don't think the patient posted as forums were very under developed but it was done then, small strips, and I do get it seems very odd today also to think about but any Strip will be odd to the newbies now even from the scalp. Do you have any links? 😂 Years ago I was interested in doing FUT to use armpit hair. I was completely out of scalp donor. This was before FUE was the norm. I was turned down for it because back then HT Drs stuck to only using scalp donor and had no experience with using hair from other areas. However I can believe it was probably done by someone somewhere as I certainly wanted to try it. 1 Al Forum Moderator (formerly BeHappy) I am a paid forum moderator for hairrestorationnetwork.com. Regular Member laverita Posted July 25 Regular Member Share Posted July 25 Yes amazing, well it was done but probably by a select few but I know that personally it was. Great you had that foresight to ask and shame they didn't do it.
