FUE (follicular unit extraction) describes a procedure where follicular units are extracted individually as grafts. They are typically implanted by first creating incisions in the recipient area and then separately inserting grafted follicles into those incisions.

DHI (direct hair implantation) is a form of FUE where the implantation process is done in a single step using a specialized tool which creates the incision and inserts the grafted follicle at the same time.

DHI is FUE

DHI is just a slightly different technique for placing the graft: the graft is loaded into an implanter pen and then this pen makes the incision/recipient site and places the graft into it at the same time. The other way to do it is to make the incision sites first and then use forceps to place the graft into the pre-made slit. People debate which is better but in reality some top surgeons use one method and some the other. Both are perfectly good in the right hands.

It’s all FUE (which simply refers to the method of extraction from the donor area).

Another question if you don’t mind…I am planning on getting it in the next few weeks (in summer) I live in the UK so although it may not be 40 degrees it will of course still be hot. I plan on spending 3 nights after the procedure in turkey with the air conditioning, and when I return to England I have 10 days off of work so I can sit with a fan and do the bare minimum to prevent sweating, when I go back to work of course I will be walking a little but nothing extreme, what are your thoughts on a little bit of sweating 10 days after? I’m not talking gym or running but maybe just being hot with a light sweat..if that makes sense? Thanks again !

What is it about sweating that you're concerned about?

I have read that it is essential to avoid sweating to help the growth and recovery of the new hairs, basically trying to avoid any of the work that is done. I am no expert so I’m hoping you can help :)

Sweat is OK.  What you need to avoid is exertion.  When the doctor makes the aperture, the little blood that sips through acts like glue and keeps the graft in place.  If you exert yourself, (create pressure), the force will push out the grafts and you'll lose them.

There are no restrictions after 7 days.  You can typically go back to normalcy after 7 days.

Thanks guys that’s really reassuring, so you think a little bit of sweat (not in the first 3 days but after) is okay? I don’t know how common it is to get transplants in the summer or if it puts anyone else off?

Sweat is a naturally occurring bodily fluid, and you’ll spend the first 7 days spraying a saline solution that is more or less just like sweat on your head every two hours.

Sweating is not an issue. Obviously in the first week or two, you want to take it easy and not over exert yourself, but that’s not because of sweating.

Thanks so much for your swift response, yes that makes sense. I will avoid the gym for about 4 weeks just as a precaution. Is the saline solution something most clinics give out? Or something I would have to purchase else where?

They should give it out.

Which clinic are you going to?

You should talk to your clinic and surgeon and understand the process and details involved in making this decision.

Obviously this forum is available to help, but any reputable clinic should be going over these sorts of details and answering common questions.
