Regular Member futureresearch Posted June 21 Regular Member Share Posted June 21 Hello all! I'm 28 and met with one of the recommended surgeons on this site for a consultation 2 months ago. My frontal third is completely gone but my midscalp and crown are still intact. I explained to them I have been unable to tolerate finasteride so far, even using .25 mg everyday but wanted to have a consultation to see if they still think a transplant was still viable for me. I'm hoping to try topical dut once I feel cleared of fin but wanted to be prepared in case I can't tolerate anything. They said they could probably replace the entire top of my head using my head and beard, and that most men can't go wrong replacing their frontal third anyway since it gives styling options and framed the face. I booked the surgery and it's scheduled for next week. However I'm starting to have doubts, which I suppose makes sense given that I will be making a life-altering decision. I suspect I'll continue to lose more hair, and even though I can afford to have more surgery and hate having to shave my head, I am worried I will eventually regret the surgery if my donor gets too thin. My father has a full head of hair but my grandfather on my mother's side did not, I don't have any pictures so can't estimate how far it'll recede. My question is do you agree it's worth replacing the frontal third, even if you will continue to lose more hair? Or is it better for me to see if I can handle topical dut before transplanting my hair? I find myself in the position of many of you all who had surgery at a young age, and though the industry has come along way, I know it's not perfect. My confidence is pretty non-existent since shaving my head these last two years but I don't want to make a rash decision. Thank you all
Valued Contributor Berba11 Posted June 21 Valued Contributor Share Posted June 21 Can you share some photos and also tell us which surgeon you're booked with? You will run the risk of your hair loss progressing without medication, but that's not necessarily a problem provided that this is accounted for with the surgical plan. You'll need a conservative, mature hairline that uses as few grafts as possible. You'll also need to be prepared to compromise on density further down the line when it comes to the crown if your hair loss continues (in case you simply don't have the donor to address advanced baldness in the future). Most blokes are fine with getting the frontal third, midscalp and lateral humps looking good and compromising on the crown if needs be. I'm not saying you'll get to that point - maybe you won't! - but be mindful of it. If you have the donor resources between scalp & beard to achieve a head of hair you'd be happy with in the worst case hair loss scenario then you'll probably be fine. Regular Member futureresearch Posted June 21 Author Regular Member Share Posted June 21 Thanks for reply, I don't have any good recent photos since I've been shaving my head but I have some old posts, mainly just lost the tiny widow's peak though I'm sure the midscalp and crown has thinned a bit too: I booked with Dr. Arocha, he seemed to have a good amount of documented afro patients which I appreciated and I am also based in the US, though in a different state. Would definitely go conservative, he recommended 2000 to my frontal third given my hair characteristics.

He’s a recommended surgeon on this site and given the US price points I doubt all surgeons are booked out everyday
