Finasteride making me lose more hair than normal.

Hi everyone! I was taking Minoxidil for 2 years and have been taking Finasteride 1mg/ day for 2 months. 1 month into Fin, I could see my hair getting thickened and reduce visibility of bald spot but now it has completely ruined my left temple. Is this part of the process or Should I stop taking it? Please see the before and after photos and suggest. I am still continuing 2ml of Minoxidil everyday.

It is common to shed when starting finasteride.

Usually the hair will grow back stronger in about 6 months.  Right now your genes are causing hairs are becoming vulnerable to DHT and dying (miniaturizing).  Finasteride blocks about 70% of DHT in the average person, so just think how much worse it might be if you were not taking the drug (not medical advice, talk to a doctor to confirm).

One potential possibility is that that minoxidil at 2% is wearing off (???) and you are yet to see benefits from the finasteride???? You could increase your minoxidil to 5% or see a dermatologist for oral minoxidil. I would not think that after four weeks you would lose hair from the finasteride (although a shed is normal before benefits). Also the fact that you are not getting side effects is a great reason to stay on finasteride.. I'm not a doctor so it would really be best to speak with a good dermatologist. All the best!

I read about it but seeing the bald spot so much makes me worry as I had a stable hair loss for last 2 years using Minoxidil 5%.

thanks for the response. I am a little skeptic on using Fin as no one in my family has any symptoms of baldness( even my grandfathers had thick hair until their lifetimes ). I am not sure where the alopecia is even coming from.

Not the Finasteride. If your unlucky and your baldness progresses further then you will surely need the dutasteride "upgrade".

Talk to your doctor first of course.

I have a consultation scheduled on Tuesday but given that my family has no history of baldness, I’m still not fully convinced even on finasteride yet.

i am already on 5% and have been using it for 2+ years. Could it be that part of my body has developed tolerance to Minoxidil?
i hope it stabilizes back as I was planning for HT at Eugenix in December.

Yes as far as I know, I’m not having issues sexually.

Sometimes it doesn't need to. You may likely have it somewhere upwards on your family tree and gotten unlucky on the lottery.

I would rather have an ancestral property ( doesn’t even have to be nice )😌

Yes that's what fin does sometimes, a big first shed, so it looks like it's working.

Obviously you have to have the patience now until the visual results will be visible.

Hopefully thats the case

I just re-read the post about shedding at 2 months only. That's usually a great sign and means its working, I would stay on track if I were you.

Thanks. I am considering a HT soon, so seriously want this to work :)  Eugenix quoted 1800 grafts

I would wait at least a year just to measure how far can the drugs go then go in the second but good approach.

Yes thanks! I started Fin in February and planning for hair transplant in Jan ( I travel to India to meet family during that time and hence trying to kill two birds with one stone )
