Mr. Invisible,

Do not take this wrong, but "hearing" and "seeing" are two different issues altogethor.

Yes there is much being said and discussed but I for one am waiting for the "proof" in the pudding which I have been waiting for nearly twenty-five years now.

I would not bet this to be viable for quite a while yet, and I truly hope I am dead wrong.

Do you not have your own donor supply?

Several doctors around the world have been working on this for a while-- and are doing live patients. Some are quite and others are publishing a little info on the results as they go. OVerall, it's probably another 5 yrs out before being fully utilized. They are still working out the kinks. Tom Arnold has said on his show that he is somehow involved in H.M.-- said he has had the procedure done on him recently. Even so, you dont know if it takes or if it does how long the FU will survive-- I think that is what is being tested and monitored now.

HM is certainly a procedure that gives us all the hope we need, and forums such as this one are the best place to find out about the developments in this field. But as Smoothy said there is still a long way to go before it becomes widely available. I recommend the browsing of the Intercytex website, which has useful info. Dr Rose is one of their consultants.

From the Intercytex website:

"INTERCYTEX ANNOUNCES TRICHOCYTE DISTRIBUTION OPTION WITH BOSLEY

May 6th, 2004: Intercytex today announced it has entered into an agreement with Bosley Medical providing them with an option to negotiate distribution of its hair induction product - TrichoCyte. Bosley currently have 75 hair transplant clinics and consultation centres throughout the US, and have the potential to distribute TrichoCyte not only within their established clinics, but also to the hair transplant community in general.

Dr Paul Kemp, CEO and CSO of Intercytex said; ??We are very pleased to be working with Bosley in this way - they undoubtedly have performed more surgical hair transplants than anyone else in the world, and their experience of the market will be extremely important as we further develop TrichoCyte'. Commenting further on behalf of Bosley, President and CEO John R. Ohanesian said; ??We are excited to have the opportunity to work with this leader in cellular biology and tissue engineering'.

Based on emerging positive results from its phase I study, Intercytex also announced it is planning to initiate phase II US and UK multi-centre clinical trials of TrichoCyte later this year.

Principle Investigator for the forthcoming trials will be Dr. Jerry Cooley (Head of the Carolina Dermatology Hair Center), who said; ??Having spent the last three years working closely with Intercytex on clinical development of follicular cell implantation, it is extremely rewarding to see that TrichoCyte is progressing towards the next key stage of its product development'.

Several individuals have so far been treated with TrichoCyte as part of a UK- based safety study conducted under the guidance of Dr. Bessam Farjo of the Farjo Clinic - none of the volunteers treated exhibited any evidence of adverse responses. Dr Farjo commented; ??I am delighted that TrichoCyte has proven safe in all volunteers enrolled into the trial, as this approach to new hair induction will represent a step-change in the way male pattern baldness is treated in the future'.

TrichoCyte comprises highly specialised inductive dermal papillae cells capable of mediating hair growth by formation of new follicular structures. The product will be indicated for treatment of male pattern baldness which currently affects over 40 million individuals in the US.

About Intercytex:

Advances in cell biology, molecular biology and tissue engineering have shown that living cells can be successfully used as therapeutic agents. This knowledge led to a first generation of cell-based therapies which overcame unique technological and regulatory hurdles to enter the market. In recent years there has also been an explosion in the fundamental understanding of how tissues and organs grow as the human body undergoes the remarkable transition from a collection of undifferentiated cells to adulthood.

Intercytex commenced operations in 2000 and currently employs 48 staff including R&D, clinical production and regulatory teams. Its main labs and offices are located in Manchester, UK, with an additional research facility near Boston, Massachusetts. Intercytex facilities include several GMP production suites for manufacturing products for clinical trials. Investors in Intercytex include Johnson & Johnson Development Capital, 3i, Merlin Biosciences, Avlar Bioventures, Cambridge Gateway Partnership, NIF Ventures, Temesek Holdings and Scottish Equity Partners.

About Bosley:

Bosley enters its 30th year in surgical hair transplantation with more than 180,000 procedures performed on men and women from sixty different nations since 1974. Bosley advanced many of the artistic techniques used worldwide today to achieve natural results under the leadership of hair restoration pioneer and company founder L. Lee Bosley, M.D.. Under the direction of Bosley's Medical Director, Ken Washenik, M.D., PhD., Bosley practices state-of-the-art follicular unit hair transplantation."

Tom is proably doing something w/one of the companies/surgical outfits listed above in the trial phases-- yes he is looking good.

Also, I believe Shapiro and Rassman are both involved in some clinical trial work on this as well with these 3rd party biotechs.

thanks for all the info everyone, im thinking about maybe volunteering becuase i dont have the patience to wait five years and probably wont be able to afford the procedure when it is released to the public. Im still not quite sure though maybe someone can help me, does the procedure require a similr procedure as a hair transplant? Will it leave a scar like a hair transplant does now? And also if anyone knows or has any info on how to volunteer for a hair cloning procedure as well, thanks again!

Yeah I did not post the link to this "volunteers wanted" for 3 reasons:

1. As Smoothy says it's the 1st phase and personally I don't have any ambitions of becoming a guinea pig.

2. I don't like the sentence "Only people who are able to assess the risk inherent within the study should volunteer". No mention of what these risks are, you might only find out at the last minute or even a few months after the procedure.

3. This research is conducted:

a) in the UK

b) in the Farjo centre

I am not comfortable at all with either of these places when it comes to HT. Farjo's results in the HT field are not convincing, to say the least. I'm willing to believe that he's getting better but right now I wouldn't let him anywhere near my scalp.

As for hair cloning, I am not aware of any "volunteers wanted" scheme, but I suggest you contact the docs involved in this research to find out.

Interesting. Isn't that Dr. Cooley the same one who did Social Drinker's HT? Nice to have a guy on the "inside".

From what I've read, any kind of meaningful hair regeneration treatment is many years off, if it will ever happen.

But, for some of you hairy guys out there an alternative may be the use of body hair. Chest, stomach, leg, and back hair have all been used with decent results. While still in its infancy, BHT has generated quite a bit of interest. I must add that as of now BHT is still unproven because not many patients have undergone BHT procedures.

Unfortunately, the costs of body hair transplants (BHT) are sky high and not something most of will be able to afford for the forseeable future ($10/graft) as there aren't many doctors who want to do it yet.

Hopefully, prices of BHT will come down and body hair can be used with scalp hair to add density allowing an NW6 or NW7 to regain a decent head of hair.

We can all hope that hair multiplication or some other therapy is just around the corner, but odds are it isn't. However, BHT is a real option available to us--if we can just get the price to come down.

Cheers!

There's no doubt in this old man's mind that this technique will eventually be the norm for "curing" baldness. Give it another 20 years and FUT/FUE will be a thing of the past.

It's comparable to radial kerototamy being replaced with laser surgery for curing nearsightedness.

Curing baldness in the next 20 years will be "child's play" compared to what our generation has had to undergo IMHO.

Yes, I'm sure eventually it will be the cure for baldness. Eventually.

But it's still a long way off. I don't think a cure for baldness is a major priority in the medical/scientific community as are other maladies such as alzheimers, cancer, etc.

If someone out there is holding off on an HT for 5 or 10 years because they think HM is around the corner they are probably going to be disappointed.

Fifty years ago people thought we'd be living like the Jetsons today. We are not.

I want my flying car too!

Yes, the Dr. Cooley in the article is Social's Dr. He has been involved for a good while. He has actively recruited some of the Doc's mentioned. Dr. Rassman is not involved in this. It is still in early trials and will be years before available here. Be careful about doctors who offer procedures that do not have proven success. Do your research! An informed decision is the answer.

Hairboy,

Yes the graft prices for BHTs are expensive in the US, Europe and even Australia. And you are correct in that patients who need reserves from the body may have a financial dilemma. Have you done much research on Dr. AP? His BHT procedures are some of the finest I have seen regarding re-growth and healing of the donor area (post-op appearance). FYI, he charges $3.50 US per BH graft right now which is the lowest world-wide that I am aware of. Best wishes in seeking your resolve!

Better late than never! Yes, hairboy, as Ailene pointed out the Dr. Cooley that is at the forefront of hair multiplication research is the very same physician that performed my hair transplant procedure in June.

Dr. Cooley practices out of Charlotte, NC and has performed procedures on quite a few forum members.

Though I do not have any further information at the moment to offer this thread, I will keep forum members apprised of any new information that I recieve.

Any more input on this new technique would be great, im not bald attm (well i'm almost 20y so that matters lol), except for a receeding hairline I guess

But looking at my father and uncle give it another 5y and who knows how it will be...

This sounds great but lots of "if's"...
