Losing hair and freaking out. Is this MPB or something else?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

This is my first time and first post here. As is usually the case, losing my hair is what brought me here.

About me: 36-year-old Southeast Asian male. I am generally quite healthy. Have been regular at the gym for years and eat a healthy diet.Currently, I’m doing a cut, have lost 9 KG in the past 8 months and have just started to see the first hint of abs.

I have always had thick, dry, heavy and wavy hair. Early greying early runs in my family and my hair started greying when I was 15. My brother’s hair started greying in his early 20s. I have regularly been coloring my hair to hide the greys since I was 27.In the past year, a few folks in my family commented I might be losing hair. I brushed it off in denial but recently I took a picture which made me realize that I really might be losing my hair. My brother (45) is mostly bald.

Another hair problem I have is a dry scalp which looks like intense dandruff and my scalp is usually itchy. A few months back, I was regularly scratching a particular spot in the front of my head which is where I noticed the hair thinning first. Thinking it might be traction alopecia, I stopped scratching and the hair improved a bit in that spot.

I’m now in near panic mode and trying to keep my hair.Looking for advice on what I should do.For now, I have started eating even healthier (more veggies everyday), changed my multivitamin and added 1000 mg biotin to my daily supplementation regiment. Whey and creatine are other supplements that I’m using. I am on no meds and have no medical issues.

Pictures are below. I got a haircut last week. I would appreciate if members here could advise me on what my next step should be.Thank you for your time.

It looks like you are diffuse thinning. Get on finasteride to maintain your hair. It likely won't come back but hopefully it holds you steady. Minoxidil can be added as well. Do some research on finasteride as some side affects can affect you but they are rare. If you notice sides then taper off or lower your dosage.

It’s probably thinning, but with the high amount of dandruff you have it could be something else. Start washing your hair with nizoral twice a week (no more no less). At the very least it should fire your dandruff, and it may help regrow your hair if whatever was causing your dandruff is causing the hair loss.

I also echo getting on finasteride and minoxidil.

Recent advances include adding antioxidants to shampoos such as vitamins C and E. However, their efficacy has been questioned due to the short contact duration. Green tea extract, selenium, copper, phytoestrogens and melatonin are being studied as attractive topical anti-aging compounds. Recombinant Human Growth Hormone has resulted in improved hair thickness, growth and even hair darkening. Skulachev et al. Presented his work on preventing aging in a recent article. Plastoquinone SkQs, a new type of antioxidant-containing compound (SkQs) have been shown to prevent age-related changes such as cannibalism, baldness, retinopathy, cataracts, etc. (1)

As we get older, our hair follicles produce less melanin, resulting in gray hair. The ingredients present in black seed oil prevent pigment cell damage and keep hair black for a long time. The benefit of taking black seed oil for hair is that it not only prevents premature graying but also effectively reverses graying. This is due to the high linoleic acid content, which helps keep up with the loss of dark pigment cells in your follicles.

Pro Tip: The specialty of black seed oil is responsible for keeping your hair black and shiny for a long time. (2)
