I could argue the same about Finasteride. I think anything that's used long term tends to have either weaker effects over time or can even cause issues down the line, that's why everyone reacts differently, some have side effects, some do not, all depends on the body. 1mg Fin isn't available in my country, so I stuck to the natural route. Whenever I did a blood exam while using Saw Palmetto, I would always stop using it at least 12 hours before doing the blood test, as some people argued online that it has a very short half-life compared to Fin. My results show that this might not be true and that it has a longer half-life than people expected, I'm unsure if it is as long as Fin, but it's longer than 12h, otherwise the DHT levels would never go down in my tests.

I've been reflecting on your scientific results and it seems to be an excellent tentative piece of research. It seems there's not a lot of research or data about Saw Palmetto as an alternative to finasteride in hair preservation.

They overcomplicate things unnecessarily, it can be very simple: Do a blood test > try a product and use it for 3-4 weeks > re-do blood test.

Both stinging nettle root and saw palmetto work fast, within a week my back acne subsided, that's one of the main symptoms of high DHT.

However there is a difference, Finasteride blocks the production of DHT, saw palmetto/stinging nettle reduce DHT and filter it out of the body. If your hair follicles are sensitive to even normal levels of DHT, nothing but medication will work, or maybe a combination of meds and herbs. This is the part where your genetics are important, since follicles are sensitive only at certain thresholds to DHT in my opinion, and these vary from person to person, hence why some people only stop hair loss with Dutasteride, but those are extreme cases.

Inflammation i.e. seborrheic dermatitis/dandruff is also a big factor contributing to hair loss.

To add to that, I've been informed by a hair transplant clinic that

"You will also require finasteride for the preservation of your pre-existing hair.

Finasteride is a medication that will completely stop baldness from progressing. It is a Dihydrotestosterone inhibitor.

Duration of post-transplant Finasteride: lifelong (but we can take breaks of 2 to 3 months in between). The dosage can be revised periodically.

The progress in the mid scalp and crown can be assessed with Finasteride for 1 year further the medication will help in increasing the density in those areas.

For Androgenetic Alopecia, it progresses with the following acceleration in different age groups

20s to 30s: very aggressively

30s to 40s: slows down

40s onward: starts stabilizing

Side effects: The Dose of 1mg daily is approved by USFDA and side effects are rare.

What if you don't take Finasteride after transplant?

The transplanted hair will grow normally. However, there may be some damage/acceleration of hair loss of the pre-existing native hair due to competition in blood supply. They may undergo physiological shock loss and the process of natural progression of male patterned baldness may continue. In that case, the pre- and post-operative pictures may look the same. So, there may not be much visual enhancement of hair density which you are aiming at. We take each step to reduce the chances of post-operative shock loss. However, if you are continuing to take Finasteride then we can achieve your goal of enhancing the density in the sparse zones

Since Androgenetic Alopecia / Baldness is not a disease and is a natural phenomenon / secondary male sexual characteristic, it can only be maintained by taking Finasteride until it stabilizes."

I wanted to share my short story here. About 2 years ago at age 22 my first signs of hair loss had shown, I experienced hair thinning on my entire head and some loss, though minimal, mostly major miniaturization, but it was noticeable.

After much research and thought I decided to risk it and give Saw Palmetto 550 mg a chance before trying anything more serious (like fin/min), to see how I would react. I've also linked some cropped pictures of laboratory test results below that were taken.

The picture with the highest DHT of almost 3300 PG/ML was in September of 2020, up to this point I was only experimenting with natural topical solutions, and although for example the Jamaican castor oil I was using helped to prevent further loss, it didn't help with the hair density so I wanted to try something else.

The second picture of 1890 PG/ML was after 2 months of Saw Palmetto 550mg x2 a day, started using it in Jan/Feb of this year and did the lab result in March, and the third lab test is from the month of May, after introducing Stinging Nettle Root tea once a day in tandem with Saw Palmetto, from March to May, it completely stabilized and was within normal range. Just for experimental purposes I stopped using both SP/SNR for about a month and a half and wouldn't you know it, DHT levels started rising again, who'd have thought? :)

I quickly got back on the regime again and it stabilized.

Regarding Saw Palmetto I only had "side effects" for the first few days where erections were very weak, after that everything went back to normal and I haven't experienced any side effects, neither from SP nor Stinging Nettle Root.

People did comment that they see a big difference from a couple of months and now regarding my hair, though I'm not satisfied yet. Though I can definitely see a lot less hairs fall out now when I stroke through my hair, It used to be 10-15, now it's 2-5 hairs, so I legit think it's worth a try before going on any meds, but I think it will take a long time to see improvement, still, I halted all further hair loss.

You don't have any side affects from long term use? How long are you taking it?

If I remember correctly, I started taking it at the start of 2021 and I took it for an entire year. I started with low doses, half a capsule a day the first week, then one capsule in the second week and when I noticed that nothing bad was happening, I upped it to two capsules per day, one in the morning and late in the afternoon, I wanted to make sure that I don't shock my organism since I was still afraid of messing with my hormones.

Everything was completely fine, zero side effects from Saw Palmetto, I saw about a 38% decrease in DHT when I used it alone, then I added stinging nettle root and the total reduction was over 70% , normalizing my DHT, I showed all the pictures at the start of the thread.

Over time I didn't see a need to use it 2 times per day so I reduced it to once per day, DHT levels still remained normal, these days I only use it on days when I train as a precaution, so about 3 times a week.

In conclusion Saw palmetto alone has about half the strength of Finasteride, SP by itself is not enough to stop hair loss, but it's a great preventative measure that won't tax your liver and kidneys like meds do, and if nothing else it can slow down the process by a lot, but it needs to be used in combination with other antiandrogens to achieve the best results.

You cannot get true value of your dht just by one blood test because you have to make multiple blood test a day (5-6) to get mean. DHT / T varie a lot along a day so you cannot have exact value... So your value are biased.

Saw palmetto do not decrease DHT in blood, only on prostate, so it is not effective to reduce hair loss.

Minoxidil : 5% topical 1ml/day
Follicular androgen receptor inhibitor : {Fluridil + CosmeRNA}
Exosome Mesotherapy 1mm (See here for explanations & results) :
ASCE+ HRLV

I did conduct multiple tests, results are consistently at below 400 pg/ml right now and they're not moving above that. Fair assumption but I haven't lost any hair in the meantime, thickness came back bit by bit, so I'd say I'm on the right track. I think you should read the results on the first page, Saw Palmetto did reduce my dht by around 40% , and it's been around 2 years since then, if nothing worked I'd be bald by now.

I got a blood test about two months ago and requested that my DHT level be checked. My general practitioner stated she was unsure if I could get that test but a testosterone test was available. She highlighted her concerns about reducing testosterone. I've been taking 350mg Saw Palmetto for the past few weeks (albeit irregularly). I'm not sure if the testosterone levels are irrelevant?

There was an older clinical study published that concluded that yes, Saw Palmetto can help prevent hair loss and strengthen existing hair but is about 30% as effective as finasteride. The trade-off is no side-effects, which is quite important to some of us. In essence, if someone is unwilling to get on Fin/Dut, Saw Palmetto is a much better alternative than taking nothing.

Very interesting read all this. I've been on Finasteride for 4 years now but it seems to have lost effectiveness. I'm going to get a hormone check and see what my markers are and if anything could be contributing to my hair loss.

That's interesting. It seems Finasteride doesn't last forever.

Yes the research is limited but here's one piece that shows it does reduce hair loss:

Just be consistent with Saw Palmetto and Stinging Nettle root, test it out yourselves. Do blood tests before starting and then every month for 3-4 months in a row whilst using it, I guarantee everyone can see a difference, DHT levels will normalize.

That's not to say that this is a magical fix and you can do whatever else you want, every one of us has bad habits that cause us harm whether it's drinking, overeating or similar, all this contributes to disbalancing our organisms which in turn lead us to where we're at now, abstinence from overindulgence is the key to maintaining health in general.

Best of luck!

I'm drinking the stinging nettle tea at work but will purchase for home use also. I'm taking 350mg Saw Palmetto daily.

Should be increasing this?

The one I use is 550mg per capsule, when you finish that bottle don't be afraid to up the dosage for higher effect, I've had 0 sides.

Some people online complained about sides from Saw Palmetto but I'm pretty sure when you start with low dosages and up it gradually that the chance for sides is extremely smaller than just shocking your body with a bigger dose, this applies to any supplement/medication. I started with half a capsule then one then two, but now I just use one on occasion as mentioned before but yeah, get one with a higher dosage later on if you can, it can't hurt.

Thanks again for sharing your research.

One question:

Would other herbal interventions, taken with Saw Palmetto, increase the effectiveness of stopping male pattern baldness? For example, Saw Palmetto with:

➤Stinging nettle (you outlined this)

➤Pumpkin Seed Oil

➤MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)

➤Zinc

➤D3

➤B Complex

There are natural supplements that combine all, or some of the above e.g.

➣Life Extension Prostate (North American based)

➣Wellman prostate (UK and Ireland based)

No problem at all, to answer your question, stinging nettle and saw palmetto i sometimes even tend to take them together at around the same time of day and it's worked out great.

I did a bit of testing by eating pumpkin seeds and drinking pumpkin seed oil for a time a few years ago, but unfortunately I didn't notice a huge reduction in DHT at the time, it would probably need a higher amount of it to be effective which isn't such a great idea to load up on.

MSM - Surprisingly I haven't heard of this before, I'm always open to new ideas so I'll research it when I have the time.

Zinc - I've read a bit about it from time to time and it has the potential to increase testosterone which might not be the best idea at the time , however it is an important nutrient for the hair follicles themselves. I've also read that Zinc has little to no effect if you take it as a supplement while you lack magnesium in your body, the process of absorbing it doesn't occur properly, hence taking it whilst magnesium defficient can have a significantly reduced effect. This is one thing to keep in mind before supplementing with Zinc.

Magnesium and Vit C are one of the two important nutrients that get depleted the most through physical labour, that people these days just seem to lack.

I had a lot of kanker sores in my mouth on and off throughout the years and it's only recently that I figured out it was due to my immune system having issues fighting everything off. Once I supplemented with Vit C and Magnesium, they completely went away and I haven't had anything since.

I'm mentioning all this because I have a Candida overgrowth that occurred because of a weak immune system and overuse of antibiotics, which resulted in this hormonal disbalance in the first place.

D3- I take it on occasion when I remember, a liquid form but in all honesty I can't say for sure if it helps specifically with this type of hair loss, it probably does if someone is so sun defficient that their hair starts falling out for that reason, I'd still say staying in the sun is better for health in general not just this, but i'm stating the obvious here.

B Complex - Took two B complexes that had enough supply for 30 days each, one pill a day, no noticable difference I'm afraid. This was recommended by some female friends , saying it did help them with their hair/nails, but as a guy it just doesn't seem to have that effect on me.

Regarding Life Extension Prostate/Wellman prostate I don't think these supplements are available in my country, I'd still opt for solutions as natural as possible, supplements don't always successfully deliver all nutrients to your body, and the dosages aren't as strong when crammed together with multiple other ingredients present in the concoction.

I've also read supplements cause acidity to our body, I tried a lot of things during the corona craze and well, let's just say it's a waste of money.

To wrap things up, my main indicator of DHT going down was back acne disappearing after years of suffering with this problem, and whenever DHT went up again those acne would come back, this was during the time when I tested going off of saw palmeto/stinging nettle, my facial acne subsided as well during its usage though that wasn't too critical.

Hope that answers everything, I'll be around, have a good one!

Thanks very much indeed for that in-depth response. There is a lot of food for thought there.

In terms of soya, I've heard that this can also lead to a potential reduction in male pattern baldness. I welcome your thoughts on this.

The Japanese are a prime example of high usage of soy products in their diet. Most Asians have perfect hair and it is indeed down to their plant/fish based diet, however it is specific to their region, as the food they eat have a lot of phytoestrogens, they as a people are generally lower in testosterone but the difference is that they are accustomed to it. It has been like that for who knows how long, and a massive difference is that they go through this diet from birth, all the way through puberty. My hair quality changed at least 5 times during puberty from year on year because of what we eat, excessive refined carbs and sugars, dairy, meat etc.

But to return to the topic at hand, 90% of soy produced are also GMO which can be an instigator of a wide array of problems in the human body if used for prolonged periods, and using it too much at this point is not beneficial for health in any way, as men need healthy testosterone levels to function normally otherwise there are physical and mental side effects if we lack our androgen hormones.

I wouldn't touch soy with a 10ft pole, it's alright to use as an occasional condiment in meals but this is not a healthy way to balance hormones as it pumps a type of estrogen into you, which we men do not want.

If you want you can of course try using it for a time but this would require you to keep checking both your estrogen and androgen levels in your body on a monthly level to determine what sort of changes occurred and you would have to use only soy so as not to mistake its effects for any other product you might be using at the time, which in my opinion gets a little too complicated and costly.

A DHT blood test is around 20 euros where I'm at, doing all of the hormones every month would cost dozens more which is just not cost effective for anybody.

Thanks very much for that information, yes I was told that Soya is a bit dodgy in large amounts. I've discovered this information below which appears to be quite interesting in terms of natural DHT blockers as well as other remedies:

https://greenmedinfo.com/blog/getting-root-hair-loss

It also suggests that topical rosemary oil may be an alternative to minoxidil.

I've taken Saw Palmetto for the past number of weeks and I'm noticing quite severe constipation and flatulence over the past week. My diet hasn't changed in that time other than the introduction of Saw Palmetto. I'm going to stop taking it to see if the symptoms improve.

I've finished reading the article you've sent. Fantastic read that does make a lot of sense, there were some things I knew on there and some things I did not. And I'll definitely investigate the copper-zinc connection more.

Regarding topical rosemary I did use it for a long time, most likely a year, rosemary shampoo + applying rosemary essential oil every day.

I can say with certainty that at that time hair loss reduced dramatically, from 10-12 hairs when i go through my head with my fingers, to around 3-4. Whenever I'd sit in front of the computer there'd be like 20 hairs on the table alone just at that time (before trying rosemary). I might try rosemary oil again, I recently combined it when i was spraying my hair with stinging nettle tea. But again, I'm unsure if rosemary oil gave me any new growth, some spots on my head did fill out, but I can't say for sure if it was rosemary or the natural dht blockers i was taking.

Regarding the usage of Saw Palmetto, real sorry to hear that. I'm a guy who generally doesn't have any constipation problems ever, I go to the bathroom regularly a couple of times per day, and I'm unsure what your diet consists of.

Ever since this thing started I moved on to intermittent fasting, a bit of a ketogenic side of the diet, started avoiding carbs and sugars, though it's been on and off , sometimes I break it for a longer time then I get back on track etc. because it's not easy, I've also added the usage of apple cider vinegar twice a day as it has many health benefits.

I would imagine as a general rule of time, when dealing with natural remedies, the results may not be as great, and may take longer to achieve but nonetheless on the whole, the side effects may be significantly less than the medical interventions. I booked in for Eugenix in India in July and looking forward to the journey. What was once a dream for almost 20 years is now becoming reality.

Not even finasteride may maintain transplanted hair...

"It has been found that the miniaturization does affect the occipital donor hair, and this may be the cause of reduction in the density of the transplanted hairs. Usage of minoxidil and finasteride and their influence in the longevity of the hair follicles in our study were not statistically significant."
