Pregnancy and Finasteride

Hi , heard some of the usual horror stories on the internet, but wanted to ask you guys.. Is it safe or sensible to try for a baby while on finasteride??

The general recommendation from even the biggest advocates of using the drug is to come off it during trying to get pregnant, due to negative implications on foetal development (I believe).

Nonsense - even bro scientist's would be offended by the above

Your girlfriend/wife shouldn't take finasteride while your hoping to get pregnant - this is the only way for foetal development problems to arise i.e. the female exposes herself to the drug.

Now for the scientific evidence.There is evidence in some edge cases that finasteride can potentially negatively effect sperm movility (its activity level & movement forward reducing its ability to make its way to the egg) & sperm volume (the volume of healthy sperms you produce) in some individuals. This has shown to be very rare. You can give a sperm sample and test for these two factors.

As long as your wife doesn’t touch the pills, you should be fine. That said, I’ve heard that you may have reduced sperm count.

Remember this though, if you take finasteride, to disclose it at blood withdrawal centers.  Your blood can go to a pregnant woman.  With the amount of folks taking finasteride, you just have to be careful.  
 

A woman or child should not have any contact with that pill nor with any residue it leaves behind after it is handled. 
 

if you are trying for a baby, it should not affect the child, it may diminish some sperm.  But it may be beneficial to be off it for few days when You try.  These days you never know long term effects of anything, it seems like researchers find something new later down the line.

I wouldn’t call it nonsense - that was the reason cited to myself from a clinic, and is also a well documented discussion in journals, albeit stemming from animal studies. For obvious reasons human studies are unable to take place. 

Because there is no confirmed clarity on whether or not female pregnant partners can be exposed in any way to the drug from her male partners use, as far as I have understood, there tends to be a general consensus of advisory messages to curtail its use during the period of trying to get pregnant/being pregnant.

If you are trying for a baby now, why even run the risk of a lower sperm count? If you've decided to use Finasteride, just wait until your baby is conceived and then go straight on it. I've had several doctors tell me that they recommend not using Finasteride when trying to conceive, not because they've got hard evidence to back it up, but because there's a chance and why even bother taking it.

Only reason i worry is because I paid out £11k for my transplant (which is on here under Dr reddy 2200 grafts ) and obviously don’t want to lose any hairs from the surgery by coming off finasteride ideally ..??

Think of the millions of guys that have taken this over the decades who accidentally got women pregnant -if there was any kind of birth defect pattern, etc, it would have emerged and lawyers would have lined their pockets by now. Don't let mom touch the pills and try to enjoy what remains of the peace and quiet for the next 20 years.

Your hairs from the surgery will have been extracted from the DHT resistant area, therefore aren’t reliant on the use of finasteride - it’s use is designed to protect and maintain your native hair up that you already have/had up top.

More people need to discuss the use of this drug with endocrinologists, hormone specialists, and urologists - as good as the hair restoration surgeons are in their field of hair restoration - they are simply not equipped to provide patient care, support, and advice with this medication.

Hi Deanomag, I would suggest discussing your concerns with Dr Reddy himself and also with your GP. You then have two medical opinions upon which to base your decision, because the internet is a minefield of disinformation at the best of times.

I had two healthy boys while on fin. But I was taking .5mg. If you dont want to go cold turkey, consider temporarily reducing your intake.
