I personally would rather take my chances dealing with this virus that kills 1-2% of the people infected, than have to deal with an economic fall out where people are looting and crime is sky high. I think it's way more dangerous, and the deaths will shoot way up, except no one is going to say #stayhome. I'm way more scared of people than I am this virus.

This is what has me worried as well. The possibility of crime skyrocketing. I’ve already noticed a lot less police presence in many neighborhoods.

I wonder what things are going to look like after 3 months of unemployment for a large portion, if not the majority, of the working class. Will you feel safe walking alone at night? This really feels like a tipping point.

Totally depends how your government/country reacts to this.  There are ways to deal with times like this. Everyone has to help one another. As I said in my initial post, this will really show someone's / a country's true colours.

Poverty can turn good people into criminals. I don't think it's a reflection of the country- this is why crime is higher in areas with high poverty.

It does, depending on how your government reacts during these times in terms of they do to assist their people financially etc.  If you're hung out to dry then of course things will go sour fast.

Well, you're probably good in Canada, but I don't feel so good living in the US 😰

Exactly.

And the news media’s constant non-stop 24/7 fear porn..err...coverage along with a lot of the gov ads and depressing corporate ads will take a huge toll mentally on many, weak or strong because you can’t avoid it unless you shut it off completely. With estimates of 30-40% US unemployment...how many will resort to violence to get necessities and how many will just give up and harm themselves.

Fuck the virus, fuck the non-stop hysteria and fear-mongering from politicians and corporate-run media....we didn’t get here because our ancestors doused themselves and everything in hand sanitizer and false-comfort of distancing themselves from their friends and family during the Black Plague and 1918 flu pandemic....their immune systems are why we are here today. The infected elderly and immune-compromised need to be protected, yes, but if we all sanitizing ourselves physically/social/mentally is far more threatening and dangerous.

Restaurants and Bars have lost over $25 Billion in just the past few weeks....many, MANY whom work in the service industry will not be eligible or getting unemployment...many are hard working undocumented and they too also work the farms getting food to our table....What will happen to them? How will they react and survive ?

The “stimulus” claims to help small businesses with loans WITH interest to cover 2 months.....but Wall Street/Corporations/Banks are getting essentially a blank check with 0% interest.

Rome is burning while the politicians save themselves and their cronies.

It is not sustainable to stop work production for several months, it's just not. Regardless of what you feel about the virus itself, at some point we have to face facts, and the facts are the country needs to start working again. Otherwise, what is happening in Southern Italy, is just a glimpse of what's to come.

I think if the economy really starts to stagger and we're unable to transition jobs online, we may experiment with a stratified quarantine where we have those at risk remain on lockdown, but even then. There's not an easy way out of this one.

No doubt a bad situation, at some point, we need to provide mass testing, instead of this 2 trillion stimulus package nonsense that is going to benefit execs in corporations, why not dump that into testing, so those infected can quarantine themselves and whoever lives with them, and those not infected can go back to work.

The Reality-show host in chief and the cronies he put in his cabinet have just last week decided to give 100% exclusive production and sales rights to the life-saving anti-viral drug that can fight this threat to 1 pharmaceutical corporation for 7 YEARS, it’s quite obvious they don’t give a shit about saving lives...only those whom will be able to afford it. Satan himself couldn’t have made a better deal.

Edit:  just read that the drug company was so shamed by critics for attempting to profit from the exclusive monopolistic lucrative deal that they backed off...

That's true, the federal reserve has been doing its best by keeping the interest rates at almost zero, even so, the housing market in some places, especially California were bubbled up higher than 2008. I'm sure it's very similar, if not worse in New York, now you have all these people with 5k dollar mortgages and no income. Now, even if the lender doesn't foreclose the house right away, missing 2-3 payments on a mortgage that high is like being in the middle of the ocean without a life jacket. There's no way to get out of the hole, it's not like the lenders are going to pardon those months. People are going to lose homes, there's no way around it.

Yeah, and yes it’s simi in NY.

The thing is...the Fed will be buying up the mortgage debt...and they will play god on whom gets help to keep their home or not.

I’m a realist...and can be an optimist...contrary to my dire comments here...I just read a great story on this doctor who’s treated 699 Covid-19 patients with 100% success rate...I’ll share the article here so the word can spread and we can demand help for everyone...
