Considering 2nd surgery - any advice or suggestions?

Hey guys,

 

I’m considering a second cosmetic procedure and would be grateful for any advice anyone has.

 

I’m currently 30, first started experiencing hair loss at around 20, and had my first FUT procedure at Bosleys in New York in 2010.

 

During this procedure I had 1,500 grafts and I still have the scar in the back. The scar is only a few mm in width and I can hide it with a 3mm trim from the barber.

 

My first question is whether I should have another FUT or go for an FUE? I have done some reading that suggests a second FUT is ideal, and I would like to absorb the first scar and maintain the same type of scar following my procedure, but not sure if the scar from a second FUT is usually larger or smaller considering the less elasticity of the skin?

 

Does anyone know, or suggest a surgeon, who has a good reputation with minimising scars for FUT procedures?

 

I am currently living in Vietnam and considering travelling back to America for another Bosleys procedure, but would be open to another clinic in Europe if anyone has any suggestions?

 

I’ve added some photos below to get some advice on the number of grafts I would need to restore a full hairline.

DO NOT GET A 2ND PROCEDURE WITH BOSLEY!!!

 

The result of your 1st procedure does not look good. Obviously not enough grafts and the placement or density does not look to today's standards.

 

Go to a recommended hair restoration surgeon on this forum. Get a few consultations and go with the surgeon you feel most comfortable with. Your case is really more like a repair of the 1st procedure to restore your frontal third and hairline. Since you've already gone the FUT route and have a scar, I"m sure that's probably your best route again with 2.5k to 3k grafts required.

 

Do some research on this site and you'll see documented cases from excellent, top notch doctors such as Konior, Shapiro, Gabel, Rahal, Hasson, Wong, Feller and many many more. Whatever doctor is working on you at the Bosley mill can not come close to the experience or artistry of any of these renowned HT specialists.

Do NOT go to Bosley again! Some of the surgeons in the US that I feel are the best are Konior, Gabel, Cooley. I would recommend doing another FUT with one of these guys to minimize your scar as much as possible.

You did the right step: You came to this Forum.

 

Now, take your time and look for better clinics then bosley. Take 6 month to look into FUT results. Then you will see it yourself.

 

My recommendations:

- Europe: Hattingen (they are not big in this Forum, but they are FUT specialists), Feriduni, Devroye, Bisanga

- Canada: H&W, Rahal

- US: Konoir, Feller&Bloxham

 

There are many more better than Bosley. But do not (!) believe me, learn it youself in this and other Forums.

You should go with the clinic that you feel most comfortable with, just as long as the doctor you want to have is the doctor you get. Regarding a second FUT, you've had one so most patients will opt for another and continue until they are stripped out before they switch to FUE but this sometimes gets cut short if a donor scar isn't as good as the previous one so while the laxity may still be good for more surgery a wider donor scar can turn FUT patients into future FUE patients. No one can or should guarantee the width of any donor scar from FUT so you need to find a surgeon, if you opt for FUT, that has demonstrated a level of consistency that shows they know what they're doing.

The only reason I was considering the USA is because I was just going to go back to Bosleys for the sake of consistency.

 

Otherwise, is there an FUT surgeon you'd recommend for a follow-up FUT in Europe or Asia?

there are options in both.

 

in Belgium... Drs DeVroye, Bisanga and Feriduni all do excellent fut work

 

in the UK, Dr Ball

 

in Thailand theres, Dr Pathomvanich

I second the belgium clinic mentione above.

There is also Hattingen in Switzerland, who were FUT only for many years and do great FUT work even though the clinic is not mentioned in this Forum often.

 

In Canada H&W and Rahal could be Options.

In the US: Konoir, Arocha and Feller&Bloxham come to my mind.

no offense Zach but they didn't do a good job, the density is very low....and unless there was a part two to your surgery ....try someone else

If considering FUT in the USA, I definitely would have Dr Cooley on your list of doctors.

When I first had the surgery in 2010 I only had 1500 grafts and I was on finesteride.

 

I stopped taking finesteride in 2013 for a year and I lost a lost of hair and it appears that the only hair that remained was the transplanted hairs (as viewed in the pictures).

 

Agreed, relative to other transplants I have seen on this forum the density is terrible and I use hair fibres on a daily basis to maintain my density. When it was done in 2010, it was all they recommended.

 

Will look into the surgeons recommended.

Zach every time you do another strip procedure you really risk getting a larger stretched scar. It's not worth the risk in my opinion. Fue has been proven to be better than outdated strip in the proper hands. A lot of people and doctors on every online forum keep pushing that outdated crap so be careful.

Zach, you look like you have a great donor supply for another HT. With all due respect, Bosley is not known for having top notch surgeons and your case appears like it will be more of a repair case to restore your frontal third zone. Since you've already gone the FUT route, I would think that would be the most cost effective and best method for ultimate graft yield - but you can also look into FUE options with recommended surgeons here. There are so many top notich surgeons in the US whose results you can research on this site. Just a few that were on my short list were Konior, Shapiro, Hasson & Wong (Canada), Rahal (Canada), Gabel, or Feller. I don't think you could go wrong with any of these doctors but ultimately you need to get a few consultations and go with who you feel most comfortable with. Best of luck to you.

PS ive never stopped my finasteride/dutasteride..10 YEARS

.it made a big difference from losing a lot of hair to losing a little slowly...the price over time is side effects.....

A second FUT isn't a bad idea. Contrary to what some say, it isn't an outdated surgical method, especially for larger procedures. Your procedure was on the smaller side so you could've had FUE, but the important thing is that you do have 1500 transplanted grafts (or thereabouts) growing and once this number is increased you can have an incredible result.

 

A smaller strip surgery wouldn't normally result in the kind of stress that would cause a wider scar, so it's possible that your surgery wasn't performed to the best of standards. A second FUT surgery could revise the scar as well as provide ample grafts to give you a nice, dense result. Ultimately you have both FUE and FUT available as options and I would ask about both during consultations and see what the doctor recommends.
