Decreasing Propecia Dosage to 2x week

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I know this topic has been spoken A TON, but I wanted to see if anyone takes 1MG of propecia just 2 days a week for a significant amount of time and didn't see a decrease in effectiveness. Looking for any recent testimonies, everything on here seems to be several years old.

Due to some side effects and wanting to be watchful of liver health (don't want to take meds processed in the liver too much, i drink a few days a week too) I shifted from a Mon, Weds, Fri regime (which worked well) to a Mon and Thurs regime a few months back. Also, I have a procedure scheduled with Dr Konior next June, so I thought any hair loss due to this switch could be fixed and I can get back on more regular dosage frequency.

I noticed some shedding at first, but have stayed the course. I also have had an increase in adult acne (I'm 42 yrs old), which is weird. I'm heading toward my 3rd month at this level and haven't seen any noticeable hair loss. Just wondering if anyone had a nightmare scenario after decreasing from 3 days to 2 days a week.

How many milligrams did you used to take before changing? Was it the full 1mg three times per week?

Another possible option would be splitting the dose to 0.5mg three times per week. That would keep the medication in your system with more consistency, but at a lower dose which could reduce side effects while maintaining efficacy.

I have been using 0.5 mg twice a week since 5 month post my surgery and so far I am under the impression that it does work well .

I had been using Propecia for many years in the past then I had to stop due to serious side effect that I developed unfortunately. I had atrial fibrillation ( that is one of the less frequent but known adverse effects). After a long period I have avoided taking it I have decided to take it again but in much lower doses than the recommended by the manufacturer.

I have read a research that showed that even a small dose of 0.2 mg once daily gives a similar effect of DHT level reduction measured in the blood as 1 mg once daily. To be honest I am not sure about the research methodology quality level but since I had that adverse reaction I decided to further lower the weekly dosage and reduced it to 0.5 twice weekly as I mentioned. It seems to be effective for me.

On top of that I consume MSM twice a day and Biotin once daily .

Good luck

@barak did your hair loss doctor recommend that dosage after your surgery?

Hi

My Doctor/ HDC Clinic did not mention the medication at all. It was my own decision to use it. I have also forgotten to mention that I have been using "Rogain" (Minoxidil 5%) foam in the last 3 months. So far I have been very pleased with my progress.

Yes it works, and lower doses spread out further apart is a solid alternative to try if various side effects emerge, before eliminating fin all together.

Here is an old post I made about it.

http://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/eve/185076-625mg-fin-2x-week-tuesday-fridays-my-experience.html

Currently I now take .625mg Proscar (.5mg Propecia is more ideal as it's easier to split..) every fourth day. I take it and then skip 3 days until the next dose.

Everyone's mileage will vary.

It works well in my case but I also cycle 6 months or so on Fin then quit the drug for months at a time.

I've also had multiple procedures so it helps to maintain my existing hair, but obviously the past procedures have made a huge difference in not having to rely heavily on Fin alone.

I recommend my regime only for those who have had sides with Fin but still want to try to continue on it.

As a standalone method it will not work for everyone of course.

good luck and hope you find the regimen that works for you
