I'm 24, been losing hair since I was 19 and been on medication for over 5 years. My hair loss has been mostly stable with some seasonal shedding and then I noticed my hairline going back a bit the past 2 years and have since added avodart every 3 days in addition to finasteride and so far so good.

Am I a candidate for a transplant seeing as I am a diffuse thinner however my hairloss is stabilized due to medication. I was thinking of 3000 grafts FUE to the frontal area only but I'm afraid of shockloss. I also want to enjoy the rest of my 20's and not care about hairloss until the future which I'm positive that there will be a treatment which at least prevents further hairloss better than finasteride. Thoughts?

I also attached two pictures which show how I style my hair when I go out with a bit of concealer on the frontal third only

Hi Hairaway,

I'm not really sure whether you are a diffuse thinner, your hair beyond your frontal third and sides still looks thick and healthy. You could just be experiencing an aggressive balding pattern at a relatively young age.

The Finasteride should make a difference and slow down any further hair loss as well as preparing you for possible shock loss post surgery.

At the age of 24, many doctors will be reluctant to operate on you however it really depends on how it is affecting your life now. Is it stopping you from being the person you want to be?

Are there other options for you? You are already using concealers which you could continue to use for another few years and see where your balding takes you. Will it stabilise or become more aggressive? Only time will tell.

It seems you have thought about the 3000 grafts in the hope that there will be a magic cure some way down the line. We all had them same thoughts and the magic cure never came along for us.

I think if you do go ahead with surgery then you need to be aware that you will possibly need further surgeries down the line to keep up with continued hairloss. You may at some point have to utilise body hair too, so it may be wise to be economical with your grafts. But if you are going to blow a lot of them, then blowing them on your hairline and frontal third isn't a bad thing.

Saying that, successful hair surgery will give you the opportunity to enjoy the rest of your twenties and put the hair loss issues aside, at least for the short term.

Thanks for your reply Shera. Regarding the number of grafts, I only say 3000 grafts as I think that would provide me enough frontal coverage based on the results I've seen on people with similar hairloss patterns as I have.

I'm actually hoping the finasteride and avodart are what keeps my hair stable for the nearby future (at least 10 more years) and I know its not so wise to depend on upcoming treatments but I do really think that in at 10-15 more years we should have something better than what we have now.

I do understand that I would likely need a second transplant down the road but I really do think that 3k grafts would do me really well in the meantime but what I am afraid of is shockloss and I do hope that my frontal hair is thick and healthy as you said and can resist it after doing a transplant.

I'm almost 25 and I plan on doing the transplant in a year when I'm almost 26. Yes, my hair is affecting me socially and destroys my confidence when I have a bad hair day and I feel like another person when I'm having a good day. Also the amount of time and the system which I painstakingly have to go through in order to have hair which is at least good enough to go out with is killing me. In the end, it doesnt even look good and looks frizzy and bad texture on the front.

I also would have considered Dr.Bhatti for a transplant, however, I live in Egypt and Turkey is right next door :) thanks again for your feedback!

You can get a hair transplant and while you are young your medical treatment is established. As long as the placement is performed sensibly with a design that takes the future into consideration you should be fine. Your pattern of loss does indicate a NW5A diffused pattern so take that into consideration for your future.

As has been observed by other posters, I'm not sure I'd categorize you as a diffuse thinner.

If you take preventative treatments to try and preserve the crown from further loss then you could likely benefit cosmetically from a restoration to your hairline and frontal third.
