how soon do you start using nizoral after a ht?

How soon do you start using Nizoral after a ht? Nizoral is known as a harsh shampoo and I want to be as careful as possible with my scalp and hair. Has anyone else here considered shelving the Nizoral for some period of time after a HT?

I do have to consider the health and upkeep of my existing hair and Nizoral is an important part of that strategy. So maybe waiting 3 or 6 months would be the sweet spot?

Be very careful of Nizoral use post HT, unless you need to control a scalp issue and then only use it sparingly 1-2 week after you are already a few months post-op.

Try to use gentler shampoos without harsh ingredients.

It's surprising to hear that Nizoral is a harsh shampoo. I found the 1% harsh and irritating, but the red 2% feels pretty good to me.

Yeah initially 2% felt great to me too, made my hair look great too until I started to lose my nicely transplanted results from Dr. Hasson..

Gotta be careful about the 2% in particular.

I would be careful KO, you don't want to end up like me and having to get another HT to replace any damage from Niz 2%.

In the end it all worked out for me but it was a long journey... lol

Yeah, some of it did grow back but not all of it unfortunately.

The thing is it dries out the sebaceous glands and these are already fragile after being newly transplanted. I've read it before and some guys here also had to have HTs because of Niz damage.

Another guy bonkerstomper:

Well i used it because i heard everyone harping on about the big 3. At first my hair felt good and dry for 2 weeks then it mostly fell out and never grew back so i had to get a ht. Simple!!

Also I was using it like 4-5x week due to my scalp condition and due to the point KO mentioned, that initially it seems like it's not so harsh. It also can make you hair look great which is the real pitfall.

I can still remember simply touching my hair a few backs back after work and hairs would just slump off and fall out.

I use the 1% once or twice per week (closer to once per week). Started using it at about 8-9 months postop because that's when I learned about it, lol

Not at all, but I knew ahead of time to be careful. I overused head and shoulders though, and I had a temporary shed.

Now I'm careful with all shampoos, and do a search on this forum before use

I think the question is more so how long/ often to wash your after a transplant anyways? In general, I've washed my hair way less since being conscious of my MPB. And if I recall, I waited a week just to gently wash my hair after I had my transplant.

But consult a few Docs to be sure!

To my understanding,  the 1% version has 1% of ketoconazole and the 2% has 2%.   How would the 2 % which has double the amount of ketoconazole be less harsh than the 1%?

Hi hsrp10,  where is this post from Spex you are referring to?  The link you posted takes me right back to this thread and I can't find any posting from Spex.

Thank you

Any update on this topic?

I'd be interested too as no offence to the original replies but it seems wholly and utterly bizarre to me that a topical shampoo that barely pierces the dermis can reach as deep as a hair follicle where its implanted to do the type of damage permanently claimed in the replies.

There's temporary damage for sure that can happen, but permanently to healthy follicles? You'd have to really have been doing something wrong

There's clinical studies that have affirmed the mild Anti-Androgen effects of 2% Ketoconazole and making hair from the more resistant DHT donor area be lost permanently doesn't sound logical or normal for the 95% or more of men.

Does anybody else have any experiences to add, positive or negative, with nizoral use?

I've been advised to use it (after a certain time frame) after having a transplant as had some seborrheic dermatitis/buildup on my scalp.

I wish there was actual peer reviewed literature on this subject. Most surgeons guess 2-4 weeks.

One thing I noticed is that when I had a bit of itching at my donor. When I started back up on keto 2% it went down about 80-90%, I believe because of its anti-inflammatory effect. With the scalp being literally like a petri dish after surgery, I wonder if it killed some bug that had taken up residence.

I know this thread is over half a decade old but could someone please elaborate on how this users hair transplant was “damaged” after using Keto shampoo?

I don't believe that there is any hard, documented evidence. Personally, I am not using it until 12 months post-op, just to be on the paranoid-safe side of things, but you may hear from others who used it without any issues as early as the 2nd month.

Anyone else can chime in regarding there experiences of using nizoral post ht,at what month did you start using it and how many times per week and did it effect the end result?

Im currently 6 months post op, before my ht I always used Nizoral 2% once a week for many years (in combination with Avodart amd regaine) just wondering if it’s ok to start now 6 months in without causing any damage.
