2638 FUT (PRFM) w/ Dr. William Lindsey (McLean, VA) on 12/7/2016

Hello everyone. I've been browsing this forum over the last few weeks before I decided to proceed with an FUT hair transplantation with Dr William Lindsey in McLean VA on 12/7/2016.

Decision on Doctor:

I had 3 consultations at different places. I was originally leaning towards FUE as I tend to keep hair shorter. 1st I went to Bosley in King of Prussia with John Bagley (consultant/sales). Went ok. He recommended 2000-2400 grafts. He said the Dr would be Dr. Michael Cornwell in Philadelphia. I couldn't find much information or reviews on this Dr and most on here recommended staying away from Bosley. My 2nd consultation was with Koher Medical (Bobby Monroe, consultant/sales). He was a little more upfront than Bosley w/ recommending FUT over FUE in my situation for my 1st transplant. The doctor would have been Dr. Grant Koher (I think). He seemed to not be 100% sure who the doctor would be as they are based in NC but do procedures in different areas in the East.

My last and final consultation was with Dr. Lindsey. This was by far the best consultation. This was the 1st of 3 appointments where I actually met with the doctor that would do the procedure. And in the office it would be done in. He also had me come during a time when he was doing another case. I was able to visit the patient, ask questions and see a little of how the surgery is performed. How great is that? He was completely honest in his recommendation. He recommended FUT so I could get more grafts for the money and preserve my donor area. He also recommended packing these in the front instead of sprinkling them around like other docs said was possible. I just had too much loss for that to be effective. I decided that night to proceed with Dr. Lindsey. Was an easy decision.

On to surgery day.

I followed pre-surgical instructions and arrived at his office at 7:30am. We got started right away. I took a valium or 2 and started with the numbing shots. For the most part, pain was very minimal. Nothing worse than getting a shot for a cavity at the dentist, just many times. Once everything was numbed up, it was pretty painless.

I'll document how the surgery went in the photos below. Overall, the surgery could not have went smoother. You could tell Dr. Lindsey has done this thousands of times. Dr. Lindsey did a majority of the surgery (numbing shots, strip extraction, strip sutures, PRFM shots, all slits for grafts). Wendy, his assistant did all the placement of the grafts. He had a team of 4 others who worked on the strip/preparing the grafts.

Surgery Post Op:

Surgery was complete about 2:00. We headed home to York, PA around 2:30. I took 2 pain pills at 2:30. Minimal discomfort throughout the afternoon. Sharpest pain was in donor area about 6:30pm when those pills wore off and probably some of the numbness wore off at same time. Popped two more pills and another about 8:00. Slept in recliner (which I have been doing anyway for 3 months after shoulder AC joint reconstruction surgery).

First Seven Days Post Op:

I continued with pain pills as needed for first few days. Mostly just stinging and discomfort in the donor area. Recipient area is still pretty numb after 7 days. Have never had any pain in recipient area. Followed cleaning instructions. Will detail this more in photos. I emailed Dr. Lindsey twice throughout the week with photo updated and he responded quickly to both saying everything looked great. Drove back to office on day 7 to get sutures removed. That stung a bit as I didn't really have any numbness in donor area after 7 days. Only soreness I have now is between crown and right side stitches. I think some of the swelling has settled there and is slowly moving out still.

Final Review

I have been ecstatic since I left Dr. Lindsey's office on how the whole process went from consultation until now. I can't recommend him and his team enough. I will continue to update this post with how things are going. If anyone has questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks again to all other users on this site for the valuable information I received before making this decision on a hair transplant.

So, today is day 10 after surgery. Everything is still going smoothly. All crusts were off about day 8/9. Had one little pimple pop up in the middle. Looked like a couple more might pop up, but they subsided. I decided to buzz the back, sides and crown today with #1 guard. I think it looks much better/more even. Redness has gotten a little better over the last day or so in recipient area. Hopefully, that continues to improve. Recipient area still pretty numb and seems raised up a bit.

I've also begun Finasteride and Rogaine (just on crown area). Hoping to try those for the next year to see if that can help with crown area as we wait for results in recipient.

Thanks again to Dr. William Lindsey.

You forgot to give your wife, a nurse, credit for drawing your blood. Thank goodness she was there and I'm glad she had a tough time too or it would have made me look bad.

See you in a month either in person or by pics.

Merry Christmas.

Day 20 Update after surgery. Shedding of new hair started about day 10. I think around 50% or a little more has shed.

Still have some redness. A couple small pimples popping up here and there. Texture still a little raised up and rigid. Hoping that smooths out over time.

I'm currently at about 3 months and 10 days. As you'll see in prior pics I did have some acne/redness issues at about 4-6 weeks. Doc prescribed Clindamycin which I used for about 2 weeks and really helped. I started Finasteride a week after surgery and Rogaine twice daily on crown after surgery and on recipient once acne and redness went down about 6 weeks.

I'm attaching pics from 2 months and 3 months (inside and outside lighting).

Thanks again to Dr. Lindsey.
