Plan B...how would you proceed?

Short background.

I had a FUT about 6 years ago. I am pretty sure the total graft count was around 3750 give or take 100 or so.

Fast forward to the present day. I just shaved my head down to a #2 guard and the scar is visible. I have included all donor supply regions including chest, abdomen, and beard.

What would you do.

Thanks for your responses. The help is much appreciated.

who did your surgery?

i've had two FUT surgeries and about to have my 3rd this month

and my "scar" looks nothing like that

my scar if you could even call it that is extremely hard to see if you are looking for it

Dr. Dow Stough - 1000 Grafts - 1996

Dr. Jerry Wong - 4352 Grafts - August 2012

Dr. Jerry Wong - 2708 Grafts - May 2016

Remember a hair transplant turns back the clock,

but it doesn't stop the clock.

I don't know if I am comfortable to say publicly just yet. I can tell you that many people on this forum have used him before and he receives a lot of praise. I was a member on here before and did countless hours of research, traveled about 1,500 miles to this doctor. The blame can't be placed on lack of research on my part. It is just a very poor outcome.

This is the first time I have shaved my whole head because I was thinking about getting another procedure and wanted to snap photos for consultation sake. Needless to say, I was shocked about the visible scar.

Looking closely that doesnt seem like a "bad" result for the # of grafts, just that you'd always need a 2nd pass. Unless I'm missing something from those pics. Scarring follows a distinct pattern. I have some idea I think.

Do you have pre/post op pics?

Unfortunately, I don't have a preop picture. I am undecided whether to proceed with a FUT or FUE. I am really nervous that the second go around could produce a scar that couldn't be repaired. With the abundance of body hair, I was hoping to use a good amount of that resource.

Feel for you buddy. This is the reason I did not want FUT.

Only FUE.

We will see more and more FUT patients with this issue as their loss progresses. Unable to shave down with the tell tale transplant scar.

In your case you could try FUE in to your scar to try hide it. I'd consult with sown reputable FUE clinics on this.

In my honest opinion, this is a poor result, for over 3,500 grafts your coverage and density seems very sparse, the scar is visible because your hair is too short, if you grew it out it would be covered. What did the doctor have to say about this result?

In my opinion you're going to need all the grafts that you can get, you already have an FUT scar so you might as well get another FUT and get as much grafts as possible then do FUE after that, I would use some chest or beard hair to camouflage the scar, you are a very hairy guy so you have an abundance of donor hair for that scar. I'm very sorry your result was less than optimal, who was the doctor? I think that it would be nice to know, I think it does this site a disservice to withhold this information, we all know every physician has bad results but how they handle it afterwards is what matters.

hi ,

i have hair loss from past 3-4 years and now complete hair is lost where doctors confirmed it as male pattern baldness then i started consulting many doctors for feedback and suggestions to find the best doctor .In this journey i went through many clinics like Vibes,Richfeel,Dr batras,Elite hair studio,ARHT hair transplant center,Dr Madhus,Dr Ashok's,Dr Yv Rao,Oliva and many more clinics in Hyderabad .where i paid much money for consultations to get there suggestions.

where many among them suggested for hair transplantation and started giving prices as per grafts .

i never felt bad of myself before and now i am not able to see my face in mirror due to hair loss and i am age of 25years .

some of doctors informed that i dont have much donor area but still we can cover the front part and now i decided to go for hair transplant.

Doctors suggesting to go for FUT which leaves a scar and the reason to get more grafts without damage .

Please suggest me a good surgeon without me going into wrong hands and later regret for it asi decided for hair transplantation .

Your valuable suggestions will save my life, money, donor area, time ,health .

Will leave my number if anyone who already got transplantation to give there suggestions and guide me .

Dr Victor Hasson did the procedure.

What did H&W do to help you? Did they offer a free procedure?

That was my guess.

I'll defer to HT on good/bad, he knows his stuff. I guess I struggle to full understand degree without knowing where you started.

I'm sure the clinic has your pre-op photos btw.

I haven't approached them yet. It has been so long ago and quite frankly how would a second procedure provide different results. I don't know all the variables that go into what would be considered a good result.

Now my thought process is to have maximal amount of FUE's for coverage. It is disheartening for sure. It is a slow gradual process but I remember having hair fall out. I recently took a passport photo and thought to myself...this hair cut is not doing it anymore, so I just shaved it. Now I have the scar to contend with.

I mean, it may be a little sparse on top, so you could add on there, but I don't see anything terrible about the scar. Most people that shave to a 2 will have a fairly obvious scar. I imagine in a couple weeks it will be much less noticeable.

So, we're you ever happy with the procedure? If you were pretty much fully bald prior to the procedure, has it changed that much? Hard to say without seeing some grown out pics. Do you have any? I would just guess you have a couple more k of grafts at least. I'm not a big fan of beard hair but it is an option.

Thanks for sharing, Roscopeeco78. Do you want to treat the scar and restore the front and back? What are your goals for hairstyling?

My opinions are my own. I am one representative of MyWHTC Clinic's European branch.

Don't know about goals for hairstyling. I would love to be able to wear it at a number 2 or 3 guard. I know that body hair takes on a different characteristic than scalp hair so that would be the reason I would want to keep it short. I am looking to maximize all possible areas of donor supply.

Right now my hair is at a number 2 guard time will tell if the scar is covered by a 3 guard cut.

Thanks for the replies.

Has your hair receded over past few years since your last HT?. I agree with other poster that for 3500 odd grafts the results does not look good enough. Plus a large bald area left in the crown to be filled. Your positive aspect is that there is not much of contrast between hair color and skin color.

Beard hairs look too coarse to be used extensively!. Have you considered some BHT specialists like Dr. Umar?

I had virtually no hair on top. I have put in a consolidation to Dr Umar via email. I looked back at pictures and thought about it. There has been a definite slow decline of transplanted hairs. It's not a outcome that is worth much to appearance. I just hope that I have enough body hair to give good coverage in the crown.

If 3500 grafts or so yields 7000 hairs on average. There is no way that all 3500 grafts are still there. I am praying that every single hair on my abdomen can be harvested. Praying for a miracle here.

If I were you, I probably wouldn't touch a thing. You may not be a good hair transplant candidate. Nobody will ever know what happened but perhaps you had poor blood-flow for the transplanted grafts to take or perhaps the doctor took hairs outside of the safe zone (although it's an excellent clinic so that seems unlikely) or maybe some other possibility. Bottom line is that you had a large procedure and not a lot of hairs are showing for it 6 years later. I'd grow your hair out a bit to cover the scar and call it a day rather than risk another procedure and potentially another sub-par result.

Roscopeeco,

Thank you for your private message yesterday alerting me to this thread. I have replied to you requesting some information to look into your case. You can email me on david@hassonandwong.com

To the members of the forum as far as I am aware this is the first we have heard from the OP in a while and I need to get together some information on his case as I am not familiar with it before we can make an assessment on how successful the surgery was and the what is best for him moving forward.

Wow...very impressive follow-up from the doctor's office for a patient from 6 years ago! Really shows what a fantastic practice they have. Will be fascinating to see what you guys conclude here.

Mav,

Let's wait until we have all the facts before we judge the result. From the two photos that the patient posted the result doesn't look poor but I have not seen his pre op photos yet. The OP has reached out to me and we will be working with him to see what next steps he can take.
