Deciding Between Two Doctors, Best Option - FUE or FUT

Hi everyone,

Ive been reading this brilliant forum for a long time, found a lot of great information on here.

I'm 32 and gradually been losing hair for the last 5 or so years. In the last year and a half my hair loss hasn't really changed.

Ive been thinking about a HT for a couple of years now and will finally be taking the plunge.

After a lot of research the two doctors I'm deciding between are Dr Bisanga & Dr Erdogan (depending if i go for FUT or FUE. Ive had online consultations with both. I believe they are both world class doctors.

My goals- Re-establish strong hairline.

Good density though front/mid area

Light crown coverage

(one procedure - over 2days if fue)

Option 1 - Dr Bisanga - 4000-4500 FUT

Option 2 - Dr Erdogan - 5000 FUE (over 2 days)

My biggest concern with FUT is the linear scar i would be left with. I usually go grade 4 back and sides. I guess i could deal with it if it was the best option.

My biggest concern with the FUE option is - would 5000 grafts (over 2 days) risk the density and quality of the final result. Is this too risky? is FUT the 'safe' option?

Sorry for the long post!! I'd appreciate peoples opinions and which they feel is the better option. I've attached pictures.

Thanks

I believe there is enough research out there to avoid a massive FUE session, you run the risk of trauma to the donor area thus making a much higher risk for a low survival rate. If you are already fearful of a massive permanent scar just ditch the idea, its a very justifiable reason to say no to FUT. Perhaps 3000 FUE in the first session and the return a few months later after letting your head recover to return to add more.

I think a HT is a great idea. It's going to make you look years younger.

Thats a tough one. You're gonna need some grafts. If I were in your shoes I might go FUT and hope for a nice scar. It really comes down to a roll of the dice if you go FUT regarding the scar. If you went FUE I might do it in 2 sessions spaced 12 months apart to try for maximum growth potential. It might be a long haul but worth it in the end and no scar.

It also depends on your donor capacity. Im sure more people will chime in with more info. Good luck.

from my experience i was over it by the end of day 1, 3000 was all i could take, its a long long long day, 3- 4 hours of extraction and then 4+ of implanting, its uncomfortable, its a tough day, and then sleeping at night and then to do it all again the next day would be just way too much for me.

In your position i would go for FUT and hope for a good scar. You would get the grafts you need in 1 hit.

Or go for FUE over perhaps 2 sessions.

If you go for a recommended HT Dr you should really have the best chance for a decent FUT scar.

Looking at your pics you seem to have a really good donor area and good hair !

I started out with FUT and then went for FUE when i was stripped out.

Thanks for the advice guys. Really appreciate it.

I am concerned about such a large FUE session but at the same time i've been seeing some very impressive results from Dr Erdogan for FUE sessions of 4000+ grafts. I guess its always a roll of the dice when it comes to a HT.

I know Dr Bisanga uses the tricophytic closure and his scars seem to, in general excellent and be very manageable. I guess its just knowing that scar will always be there.

This final step in making the decision is what i'm finding the hardest!

Thanks johnboy71

I think that would be an advantage with FUT. At least i would have a decent amount of remaining donor for FUE if needed in the future.

Dr Bisanga has advised that the strip scar could be covered up with a small number of FUE grafts in the future if needed. Does anyone know if this is usually successful in hiding the scar to say a grade 2/3 cut.

I agree with you. Future planning is so important. For those of us that are always chasing the loss you need a game plan for the present and future.

Im moving on to BHT next - and am going to use some to fill my now revised FUT scar.

Totally agree with you that future planning needs to be considered!

How have you dealt with having the FUT scar. Has it caused you any problems in general or have you been able to hide it pretty easily?

others might disagree but I think 2000 for the front and another 1000 on top would make a massive improvement, which would be done in 1 FUE session, and you would have plenty of more donor area to choose from then even if you needed it BHT in the future

I had X2 FUTs and my scar was quite stretched. However i had the scar revised and its now much less noticiable.

I have my hair long enough to hide it anyway. Now i can have it shorter if i wanted. I think if i get some BHT beard hair on what remains its going to be as good as i can get it.

@sethticles I was offered the option of 3000 grafts FUE from Dr Bisanga, but he said this would be used for just the front/mid area and leave the crown. (this was only an online consultation though)

I guess that's something to consider. I think originally i was hoping to get it addressed in one session as oppose to having to return in 12 months time.

@johnboy71 Oh right i see, at least now you're in a position that its much less noticeable and fortune you can cover it with long hair. Hopefully the BHT works out well for you.

The lowest grade i usually go is grade 4. So i guess i could get away with it. Think i'm leaning towards FUT with Dr Bisanga now.

Any opinions from anyone on Dr Bisanga's FUT work and Dr Erdogans 4000+ FUE sessions? Any ex patients of either?

Both great surgeons!! I'd get your donor checked for laxity and numbers of fus per cm and and get some professional opinions on which type of procedure would benefit you most!! If you never interested in shaving down the fut may suit you best if you've got good laxity if you may shave down then is lean towards fue doing the front 2/3 reds first then the last third 12 months later say a 3000 start then 2000 a year after!!

Appreciate the reply. Thanks for the advice. I cant ever see me wanting to shave down in the future. Which is why i'm probably leaning towards FUT now. Guess you can never predict the future though.

I'm looking into booking a face to face consultation with Dr Bisanga for as soon as possible so i'm sure i will get some great, honest advice from him.

Both great choices. Some state Bisanga's hairlines are too high, but I think he produces solid work, just make sure you are comfortable with this conservative hairlines. You should also consult with Feriduni. He is probably the best FUT surgeon in Europe in my opinion. He has a 9 month waiting list which should confirm everything you need to know.

Seeing you are going with FUT, I believe the best FUT surgeons are in North America _ Dr Hasson, Dr Ron Shapiro, Dr Konior, and Dr Rahal. They will be more expensive though.

I guess when I go for a consultation with Dr Bisanga I can see what his approach would be with my hairline. Definitely something to consider though. I have contacted Dr Feriduni for an online consultation but haven't got a response yet.

I'm definitely still very open to opting for FUE with Dr Erdogan - wonder if there's any people that think a 4500-5000 session with Erdogan would be a good choice. He seems to really go for the wow factor with his results and had many impressive 4000+ FUE results online. I guess there's a lot of failed ones out there though that you don't get to see...

If you have the lifetime donor supply, then why not go for the mega-session of 4500-5000 grafts. The wow factor becomes a numbers game, but why not, we are only young once. Erdogan tends to overcompensate on graft count and dense packing to achieve that wow factor, and (I assume) mitigate the so called higher transection rate for FUEs, but who cares if he can get you the "wow factor". I don't think Bisango can achieve those same wow results. If you can live with the linier scar, then I would still go for an FUT mega-session than a FUE mega-session. I am still not convinced that FUE achieves a better result than FUT besides what all the haters out there are saying - that's just me. I actually believe the information put out on this forum by Dr. Feller, and will do so until a FUE Top surgeon or subject matter specialist comes out and proves otherwise. As I am going with FUT, Dr Victor Hasson is my "go to", but if I elected FUE, then without question I would go to Erdogan.

I think whichever option chosen for anyone in this situation, it's always going to be a roll of the dice. Everyone wants that wow factor - the fact is not everyone is going to get it. If I find that I still have a good number of available after a 4500/5000 fue session with Dr Erdogan then I think I'd chance it chasing that wow factor result and hope for the best. Knowing I'd at least have some remaining grafts available for the future. As it stands I'm not sure what my donor capacity is. I think Bisanga Fut option is probably the 'safe' choice (not that any choice is safe) - solid but no wow factor.

I'm not educated enough in this subject to way in on the FUE vs FUT debate. I can only go on what I read /see.

Good luck with your FUT surgery with Dr Hasson - wish you the best!

Beno,

You're getting a lot of solid responses here! You've also managed to start an FUE versus strip debate and keep it civil. You'll have to tell me your secret. Hahah.

If you only shave a low as a 4 and Dr Bisanga was leading with strip, this is probably your "best bet." Frankly, I think this would probably give you the best results in the end. However, his FUE plan sounds fairly reasonable as well.

Good luck! Feel free to ask any additional questions.

Personally i would not entertain a 4-5000 FUE session even over 2 days. Far too much trauma on the scalp in one hit.

The maximum i would consider is 3000 FUE split over 2 days.

IF the scar is not an issue for you and you will never shave short FUT is an option with one of these Dr's who are both very solid.

Just remember if it dosent work out you cant shave it off and move on without the scar showing.

Either way with Bisanga and Feriduni with either procedure you are giving yourself the best chance.

Hey Blake,

I definitely don't want to start another FUT vs FUE heated debate ha ha. Trying to steer clear of that argument!

If I decide to go with the FUT option I will feel extremely comfortable going with Dr Bisanga. The only concern I have with the 3000 FUE route with Dr B is how the crown will look and if I'll still be able to cover it. Knowing it maybe be a couple of years before I could return for another surgery.

This is why I'm intrigued by Dr Erdogan's 4500/5000 option which would give some crown coverage. I'm trying to work out if this is a viable option. I'm seeing very impressive results from him for similar cases to mine and his clinic appears to be outstanding. On the other hand, I am also am wary of being left with enough donor incase needed in the future.

It seems there's always going to be pros and cons with any route you go.

Yup. Always pros and cons. I tend to agree with Bogger when it comes to these very big FUE sessions over a small period. Like you said, however, Erdogan's track record is impressive.
