Patient’s Hair Transplant Repair Results By Dr. Umar - Before and After 11,000 Grafts

This patient initially chose strip surgery to address hair loss resulting from androgenic alopecia. However, the failure of his first surgery to produce the expected growth results caused a chain of additional repair procedures. These subsequent surgeries were also performed using the strip technique.

Like many individuals needing successful repair, this gentleman faced the Catch 22 of not having enough donor follicles left on his scalp to achieve significant improvement. Therefore, his situation grew more hopeless after each of these operations.

New Hope With Body Hair Follicles

The patient learned about Dr. Umar’s work in hair transplant repair, including individuals who had been able to achieve full coverage, even under worse conditions. These results were made possible through the ability to remove body hair follicles as additional donor resources.

Due to strong need for larger donor supplies among patients with severe hair loss and repair situations, Dr. Umar worked to design a new form of FUE punch technology known as UGraft. It includes special mechanics and features which safely remove follicles growing at sharp angles or producing hair emerging at unpredictable growth trajectories. This specialized engineering enabled large volumes of body hair to be removed so that they can then serve as viable hair transplant grafts.

This patient wanted to restore normal coverage and be able to move on with his life. Therefore, he decided to undergo yet another surgery, only this time using a combined donor pool of head and beard hair.

To achieve this patient’s goals, Dr. Umar removed 11,000 grafts.

  • 9500 were inserted to cover the areas of depleted hair on the head

  • 1500 were applied to conceal the strip scarring

Besides the safe harvesting of body hair, UGraft also creates wound cavities with a special shape. When the skin heals, extraneous tissue around the edges of the wounds are drawn beneath the skin’s surface. This minimizes the appearance of noticeable raised scars.

Furthermore, Dr. Umar made sure to remove beard hair follicles by selecting them diffusely across the chin and neck. Growth of stubble or a fuller beard would therefore not reveal large patches of missing hair.

Despite the extent of his hair loss, the patient was able to recover an aggressive hairline along with natural looking temples to complement the final hair contour around the face. This was due to the additional grafts made possible in the donor pool through the extraction of beard hair.

These results are shown at just seven months. Additional improvements are expected in the months ahead.

I think beard hair is nice for scars, but I think this guy would have been better off cutting his losses and concealing the scars with fue and shaving the head. I would spot this way off. It's not a knock on the doctor's work, just using large amounts of beard hair.

No breakdown is mentioned but other than using some nape hair for the hairline the vast majority of grafts came from the beard. No question than the amount of beard grafts which are essentially singles, would be far greater to achieve coverage than what could have been achieved with scalp derived grafts. I am not sure that too many patients would spend nearly $90K to achieve a head of hair that at best looks like a used Brillo pad or at worst a mop of pubic hair.

This is again before after pic in diff light and diff background

I have requested b4 multiple times and now requesting again their is no close up of below mandible part from where beard graft was extracted immediate post op and clean shaven with camera zoomed in. Why dr Umar never post pre op post op pic in the way most doctors post like pre op immediate post op

Then week after, 3 weeks after and so on. I would again request here to staff of Dr Umar and Dr Umar to post pic in a way requested plus where is the details what punch he uses.

Does he use motorized or manual. post some pic where he is creating slit for beard graft and putting it. Please do reply dr Umar and his staff

I made a similar statement before which I agree with too. If the pictures and video were taken in proper consistent lighting, it will tell a different story.

I tend to agree with what others have said: An impressive achievement technically, but the patient might have been better served not trying to achieve coverage on top and front with beard hair and instead just fill in his scar via FUE and then shave down.

Cosmetically, I think the patient might try some pomade or other product to minimize the Brillo appearance of the transplanted beard hair.

One thing that might help the appearance of beard hair on the head is perm solution. I used to use this when I was young and was growing my hair long to get annoying curls and kinks out of it. You simply put the perm solution on the head, comb the hair straight and let if process.

It's a lot milder than a regular chemical straightener but can still fry your hair if you don't follow the directions carefully.

How is it possible to extract so many grafts on the face and have no visible scars but when other people previously went through fue and shave down to skin in the back of their head, you can see white dots?

Can ugraft be used to extract donor hair from back of head?

I see this alot with unfortunate cases of patients that have have bad work done and severely depleted donors resorting to garantuan amounts of beard/body hair in the attempt to achieve a full head of hair(low hairline, closed temples, filled crown, basically a teenage hairline). From an external perspective(mine), I would have personally chosen to fill in the scar and even remove the old plugs/minigrafts/grafts and have just gone for a natural balding progression rather than to achieve the illusion of a head of hair. You can clearly see that prior to his operation with Umar, the transplanted hair on top(extracted via strip) was at least of a fine calibre and resembled natural scalp hair, whereas after the operation, the thick calibre beard grafts are quite noticeable to us. I personally would have chosen a short and clean back and sides look but this is from a perspective(again, mine) that is not in this patient's shoes. If this procedure has given this individual's confidence in his image back, then I feel that outweighs the negatives that we perceive.

Let us not forget that most(all?) males seeking surgical hair restoration have issues with their image, enough to actually go through with surgical hair restoration, where others simply could not care less if they become a norwood 5/6/7.

This is not a knock on Dr Umar who I greatly respect. Clearly you can see that even with several thousand beard grafts extracted from the beard area, the donor area is left relatively immaculate, the extraction patterns cleverly chosen and punch scars are inconsequential in this case.

Most patients after several years of poor hair condition have forgotten how best to take care of their hair and do not visit hair salons having been shying away from them for years. We find this to be more the case with patient who have had severe hair loss conditions for a long time. After radical hair restoration, it takes a while to make the psychological leap back to these routines. The first priority is often "i want hair". The next step is now that I have the hair what is the best look for me. We usually encourage a first visit to a hair care professional who can help determine an ideal hair length and hair grooming practices including styling and hair care products to help improve the look and feel of the hair texture.

This patient has been so advised and we expect that in his video update, the he would have adopted a hair grooming routine that takes optimal advantage of his global coverage.

The appearance of beard hair on the head will differ from person to person, depending on both genetics and styling practices. Here is another example of a patient from our clinic who underwent a large volume hair transplant repair (7300 grafts) using beard hair combined with head hair. Body Hair to Head Transplantation Results - 7300 Grafts.

He was quite thrilled with his results which finally put an end to the many visible errors left by previous surgeries. In his video testimony, he notes that his final head of hair is closely similar to what he had in college. So when he attended his class reunion after his surgery, it would seem to his old friends that he had only grown older, but maintained a rather youthful head of hair, what they had seen of him back in the 1960s. A few reservations I have about Dr. Umar's videos are:

1)There always appears to be some slick editing i.e., quick fade outs, blurring as the camera zooms in and soft lighting.

2)The punch appears to a large caliber and the donor sites look much bloodier than what we see from other FUE specialists.

3)The claim that body hair is "thicker" and therefore provides better coverage and requires less grafts than scalp hair is suspect. While that may be true for beard hair, it is doubtful that this applies to chest, leg or arm hair. Furthermore since these FUs are singles even with thicker beard grafts the coverage claims are not credible. Far more BHT are needed to obtain a good cosmetic result and the viability while better in the hands of an experienced surgeon still may not equal to scalp hair. Beard hair is usually much coarser and curly and needs to be mixed in with enough scalp hair to adequately conceal it. Considering these factors the cost for such a repair could end up being astronomical as well which is never mentioned.

4) The jingle is obnoxious and the only way I can watch the videos is to turn off the sound.

Re: Graft Extractions on the Face, Visible Scarring and Donor Hair From Back of the Head

Hello zyzz,

UGraft is configured to create uniquely shaped wound cavities which are inverted at the bottom. This reduces the extraneous tissue on the skin's surface which would otherwise contribute to raised scarring. The edges of the wound are then able to close in a way that renders minimal scar tissue that would typically be negligible to the human eye.

Here is an article which also has an animated video which helps to grasp a better visual idea of how this works. uGraft | Follicular Unit Extraction | Body Hair Transplant

And yes, UGraft can also be used to extract donor hair from the back of the head.

Hairweare,

I am glad you have the mute button. We find the music to be light hearted fun. Too bad you do not see the humor in it.

You stated: The claim that body hair is "thicker" and therefore provides better coverage and requires less grafts than scalp hair is suspect.

Can you show me where this statement was made by Dr Umar or our clinic? If there is, I am sure it is a mistake. But I cannot fathom where this mistake would have occurred as it is contrary to myriad of statements made by us on this subject. SO "hairweare" where did you find such a statement?

Abbie, watch the video again and note the pt's reasoning for undergoing the procedure from 1:45

The pt's statements which I believe are misleading and incorrect should have been edited since the video is an advertisement. Unless disavowed it implies that the clinic is in agreement with those statements.

I am glad I am not the only one who felt that the video was deceptive. I am not a surgeon but the description of a punch that results in less scarring because the diameter of the wound is inverted and smaller at the skin surface sounds to me to be physically impossible and more like a marketing gimmick.

Hereweare, if you are referring to this video;

We were very pleased to have this patient come to the clinic for hair transplant surgery. He was presented with all of the options, discussed them with Dr U, and made a decision as to what was right for him. He is very pleased with the outcome of his surgeries and was kind enough to discuss his experience in a home video he made himself, in his own words. We are grateful for his doing this and feel honored to be part of his hair recovery journey.

In my entire career I have never once heard that "raised scarring" was a problem with FUE, much less if not performed by non "Ugraft" punches. Even punch scars in the donor area can be fairly flat. Furthermore, there is no physical advantage to your punch just because it has an inverse bevel. The diameter of the punch at the point of contact is constant once the bevel is cleared. I do like the saline flush function. I normally don't comment on such things but Hairweare kind of got me interested in this. The video is very well made, it's just the physics don't really add up.

Wound healing is not physics Mr Tillman...its biology the scope of which is outside the scope of this forum. But Dr U has published his work on this in several peer reviewed scientific journals, which you are welcome to read. Contact Dr U directly drumar@dru.com if you need any part of his publications simplified for your understanding.

But we thank you and Hairweare for your opinions.

Abbie,

You can use whatever reference you like. The science, the physics, the description the "funny science talk". It doesn't add up. I don't see the need to insult me by stating that Dr. Umar can "simplify" anything for me. Instead of being condescending, I think it would be more productive to simply address the issue.

Furthermore, it is counter productive to refer me to a journal resource website that has requirements I do not meet. I have to belong to an organization they recognize and use an email address proving my membership, such as a .edu email address. I can only access snippets. I'm sure the members here would appreciate a good read so post the material here.

How does a punch with a cutting edge the same diameter as the majority of the body of the punch, with a bevel, prevent an issue of raised scarring which is not an issue to begin with? And what is this extraneous tissue that it avoids creating that can also contribute to raised scarring? If this is a real problem that you are solving please show examples. If it is such a problem that requires the creation of a special punch that warrants getting a special name then surely there are endless examples to share.
