Dr. Shelly Friedman – ARTAS FUE – 1,541 Grafts - Norwood II - 1 Year Results

Dr. Friedman performed a FUE transplant using the newest hair restoration technology, ARTAS. The ARTAS procedure enables Dr. Friedman to use a robot to harvest grafts with a precise level of control and accuracy leaving the donor area without noticeable scarring. Our patient is a 40 year old male that had sparse areas in the hairline and temples. Dr. Friedman successfully transplanted 1,541 grafts. Total of 755 single follicles were placed in the hairline and temples. 786 group follicular units were placed in frontal region, bilateral temples and hairline. FUE via the ARTAS is minimally invasive leaving the donor area with small pin sized undetectable scarring, unlike the FUT lateral eclipse scarring. ARTAS is best for those who may desire to keep a short styled hair cut or shave their head. Dr. Friedman uses custom blades and strategically places each follicular unit at the correct angle and direction creating the patient’s transplanted grafts to grow in a natural pattern. These photos show our patient pre-op and 1 year post-op. Patient’s hair loss prevention is using low-level laser therapy every other day for 30 minutes.

This is a phenomenal result for only 1500 grafts. I would not have expected that much density from what he started with. I would be very happy if I were him.

I decided against going with a physician who used Artas. Nothing against the procedure, but I think it's somewhat limited in how many grafts it can do in one session. I ended up needing 3800 grafts, but the physician was telling me I only needed 1500 (I suspect because that's all he could do in 1 session). It seems like a great technology, but I think having a good physician who understands the art of rebuilding a hairline is the most important thing.

This certainly is an impressive turn around. I do have some questions however. It was stated that there is LLLT involved. Does this also include the use of a minoxidil support product as is so often the case with LLLT usage? Was this begun near the time of the surgery? Is there any finasteride or dutasteride use involved as well?

The reason I'm asking is because the mid-scalp/vertex/crown regions were not addressed surgically but there is a dramatic difference. This could also be due to the very coarse nature of the hair grown longer but it would still be interesting to know all medical factors involved.

Maybe because the hair is cut shorter in the pre op photos but is fully grown in the post op ? With the coarseness of the hair here, that itself can make a dramatic difference in the pictures.

I thought I said that(?).

Joe I agree you said that about coarse hair, --- what I meant is , his haircut is a lot shorter in the pre op photos compared to post op so I am not sure if I can really make out whether there is any meaningful difference at all in the areas (crown) that were not operated on . Maybe if the post op haircut was kept at a similar clip, any further growth (or the lack of it) in the non transplanted areas would be more obvious.

I would like to see the immediate post op pictures... This man's hair is just like mine.

Does anyone know the limits of Artas? I heard it can only do about 1500 grafts per session. For someone like this who doesn't need too many grafts, Artas is probably a great solution. But what about for us dudes who need more like 2500+ grafts? Would 2 sessions be required?

I've heard some clinics doing 3000+ grafts in a day with the Artas but I think it all depends on the doctor and clinic on their limits. A lot depends on the patient's donor supply and also how easy the extraction process is going.

This result looks fantastic, no doubt. I have to ask, are there any immediate post op and other bench mark progress pictures available? I'm perplexed as this patient looked more like a diffused NW 5 in the pre-op photos. I haven't come across anyone who's benefitted more or come close to this type of result with the LLLT device.

I'd like to see post ops too. The average person should not expect a really like this with 1500 grafts and lilt.
