Quality of hairs that begin to sprout and donor shockloss

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

This forum has been invaluable to me throughout my transplant journey. I have to say it has been one of the most emotional journeys i am going through in my life and this forum has helped me in many ways. My first question stems from the hairs that are starting to sprout. I am 4 months and 23 days from my transplant and am seeing growth. I read that these hairs will be very tiny, colorless and vellus. I just wanted to confirm that it what the majority of patients see? My hairs definitely fit in all those categories. They are even very difficult to see in the naked eye. Is this the case? Secondly, sadly I did experience shockloss in my donor area on one side of my scar and it has gotten a lot better but I still have 2 small spots- .5cm^2 that have yet to grow. I had other spots about 1.5cm^2 that have filled in already as well. My question is has anyone experience shockloss that has not all grown back at the same time? Thank you very much for your help! I will be posting pictures soon as I have to muster up the courage to do so.

hi ,

Congrats on your HT , can we know who did the surgery ? FUT/FUE ?

Many people have shockloss , and donor shock loss always Grows Back so do not worry , if the recipient is in shock , then there are chances that they may or may not grow ,

At 4 Months 24 days , its still very early days , so wait till a few more weeks , usually the results are not fully understood until 12 Months , Hope this Helps !

Hello Mikeey,

Thank you for the fast reply and the support. My transplant was done on August 14th 2014 with Dr. Sharon Keene in Tucson Arizona. I live in Scottsdale Arizona, so the 2 hour drive down was not bad and I went to university down there as well, thus know the area. I picked Dr. Sharon Keene after meeting with her as I felt the most comfortable with her and her staff. Dr. Keene and her staff have been amazing and continue to be. Every time I have a question, I can shoot Dr. Keene an email and I get a reply within 24-48 hours. I decided to reach out on this forum because I know how valuable support groups can be and help each other through emotional times especially when we are going through the same journey. I had an FUT. My graft breakdown is as follows: 1's: 329+, 2's: 1835, 3's: 827, 4's: 215. I had about 1500+ grafts in the hairline and 1400+ in my crown. Attached are my pre-op photos, 1 day post ops, 2 month post op and 4 month post op. I have to say at 2 months post op, it was the hardest time for me. I definitely looked worse before transplant and had a lot of shock loss in the recipient area as you can tell from my pre-op photos. This was the most emotional time for me. But then at 4 months, I started turning the corner as you can tell from my photos- my crown is filling in and my hairline is slowly establishing itself.

PS-the shockloss I was referring to in my first post was in my donor area. I will be posting pictures tonight.

You got some good advice here. Try not to worry or overly evaluate your hair at this stage. It's normal for new hair growth to be fine and light in color. In time, the hairs will become darker and more robust. You've got a long way to go.

Happy Growing!

Hello all,

I have a update and questions for those who may have experience what I have. These are my 6 month post FUT pics. As you can see, my crown thus far, has had the most significant change. My hairline is improving but seems to be slower than my crown. I have heard the opposite to be true. As you can see, my right side is lagging and there are still areas that need to fill in. At 6 months, can hairs continue to break skin and these areas will fill in? Or does at 6 months. all the hairs that have popped out have done so? Has anyone had more growth; in terms of new hairs after 6 months? Also, i have attached my shock loss pics. I still have these 2 areas that need to fill in. Has anyone experience growth post 6 months in terms of shock loss? Thank you for your replies!

Yes it will still improve. Here is my 6 and 10 months. I know the lighting is not consistent but it is the best I could find.
